Tigers trade for Sheffield

The Tigers picked up Sheffield from the Yankees today. They also signed him to a two year extension. Haven't heard money figures on the extension yet. They gave up Kevin Whelan, Humberto Sanchez, and Clagett (a reliever that pitched in West Michigan for us). My commentary on the extended

Star-divide

While I think Sheffield provides a potent bat for the lineup, I think we could have done better with what we surrendered. The good side is that we gave up two relievers and a decent starting prospect. Sanchez could develop into a very good pitcher, if he stays healthy. I think in the end the best of the group will probably be Whelan. At least we have a strong pen already, so we can overcome the loss.

Wanted to know
about the prospects the Tigers gave up.  How do you think they are and how far are they away from MLB action?

Humberto Sanchez
has a very good arm, although it seemed to fade greatly near the end of the season.  There were many that felt he was an extremely great prospect, but got a little worried about him in the end.  He's still a very good pitcher, and has a pretty good sinker pitch.

Prospects
Humberto Sanchez is the prize jewel of the deal for the Yankees. If he can stay healthy and in shape, he could develop into a top of the rotation type of guy. Kevin Whelan is a closer in waiting. He has been a reliever throughout his career and has mid to high 90's heat. His drawback has been that he has control issues, but he was working on a new pitch this year that contributed. I think he could eventually prove to be a loss that hurts. Clagett is another reliever that has 92-94 mph fastball. He sounds like a middle relief guy to me, but it never hurts to have them around. I think the big concern is the probability that we could have gotten a younger, proven hitter for this package over Sheffield. Don't get me wrong, Sheffield is a great hitter. This just smacks of jumping the gun instead if waiting and seeing. From the look of things, the Yankees will turn the prospects we just gave them into a more proven starter for them.
