Recent Trades

Do you really like the two trades made recently?  Edgar Renteria was the best SS out there, but we gave up two stellar prospects inorder to get him, Jair was shaping up to be a pretty good pitcher, perhaps in a few seasons along the caliber of Bonderman and Verlander, and that'd be a hell of a tri-fecto starting pitching rotation.  I'm not gonna talk much about Gorky since I didn't follow him much in the minors and never saw him make it to the show, but from what I've read around the net he was a developing stud.  If Jair's shoulder injury would've affected the rest of his career then I think we got a steal, I just hope we didn't pull another Doyle Alexander with this deal.

About the Infante deal, I'm not necessarily for it either.  I liked Infante, and the idea of having a great utility man whom you could count on to play almost anywhere.  Honestly I don't think he got enough playing time, he hit well enough when he was in and was solid in the field.  I'm not going to call this a bad deal yet, because I didn't watch Jones play much this season, or enough to make a call on this.  My Cubs fan friends really liked this deal, makes me nervous.  What do you guys think about the deals?  I can't back up my arguments with stats or anything, just my gut feelings on them.

Recent Trades: My Two Cents
Rojo, I think the Tigers made the right moves with both trades. I think they might have seen Jurrjens as injury prone at best, fragile at worst. From everything I've read, the long-term gem in the Renteria deal will be Gorkys Hernandez. The difference between this trade and the Smoltz/Alexander trade is that back in 1987 the Tigers' prospect cupboard was bare. And, it's worth noting, Smoltz wasn't exactly on the fast track to Detroit. He was languishing at Double-A. When he got under Leo Mazzone's wing in Atlanta, that's when his career took off. As for Infante/Jones, I think it Omar went as far as he was going to with the Tigers. Also, the emergence of Ryan Raburn made him expendable. I think Cubs fans like the deal because they're not enamored with Ryan Theriot. Ian and I discussed on The Detroit Tigers Podcast that the Renteria deal was a win-now trade; Jacque Jones will keep left field warm until Cameron Maybin is ready. At long last, the Tigers have chips to play with and Dave Dombrowski is using them. The good times are here! Mike www.DailyFungo.com

I liked....
... the Renteria deal. I dont think Jurrjens is on the Bonderman/Verlander level, and to be honest, I like Bazardo just about as much and Dallas Trahern more. We have a good amount of young pitching possible. Gorkys was an interesting prospect, but nothing we couldnt give up. Renteria was a great SS to get when there really wasnt many other good options. I think that was a good deal both ways.

I didnt like the Jones deal so much. What really makes him different than Craig Monroe? People glow about his splits and how he will be a good platoon partner for Thames, but Jones really has only hit RHPs well in 1 year (2006) in the past 4. He was actually better against lefties last year. In 05 he hit .260 with a <.820 OPS vs righties and in 04 he hit worse than that. Im just not really enthralled with Jones. Maybe he has a resurgence this year, but I somehow doubt he will be more than an average LF.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and happily eat crow for this if he rakes this year.

Also like trades
Edgar has always been good except with Boston.  The players seem to be very excited that he's coming here, especially Carlos.  We probably won't see as many errors (thank goodness).  I liked Omar too but it's really an opportunity for him to shine with another club.  While he was a decent fielder, he's made some crucial errors that drove DD crazy.  Ryan Raburn will probably pick up some of his time in the OF and 3rd bse.  Jacque Jones had a heck of a time in Chicago but finished the year real strong.  I think he'll be just fine once Andy VanSlyke takes him under his wing.  Jacque will want to do well as this might likely be the only year he's with the Tigers if they bring Maybin in.

More thoughts
I like that we got Renteria, I think this gives us one of the strongest middle infields in baseball, I just don't like what we gave up in order to get it.  But I guess that's true in most cases, you hate giving up things.  I always hate seeing young pitching be dealt away, because its the most precious commodity a team can have.  If some in your rotation gets hurt, which has happened the past two seasons, their the guys who make or break your season.  Who comes in if one of our guys get hurts?  Minor?  I'm not sure of all we have in the farm system, but if someone does know what our back-ups are for starters, could you post it up or post a link to a Detroit Minor League site?

About Gorkys, this one didn't bug me too much mainly because we traded a SS for a SS, and so I didn't see it as a problem in the near-future, plus that combined with the fact that I didn't know much about him other than he was potential trade-ammo, I was content.  Slightly more worried now that we traded Infante.

As far as the starting line-up goes I'm very happy with it and see it as much better than 07's.  We upgraded our primary team at the expense of our back-ups, and that's a better trade-off.

Renteria is worth it
I didn't like that the Tigers gave up both Jurrjens and Hernandez in the deal.  I keep reading about these teams that want young centerfielders, and think Detroit maybe should've held him back for another trade.  But if that's what it took for Detroit to get Renteria, then they probably had to do it.  For offense and defense, he was the best shortstop available and also at the best value.

But after trading two top prospects, what's left for the Tigers to deal for a reliever?

As for the Jacque Jones deal, Omar Infante wasn't going to be on next year's team anyway.  So getting a starting left fielder - and a left-handed bat - for what's almost nothing seems like a savvy deal to me.
