McClendon Not on the Mariners' Radar
Judging from the lack of comments for our post about Lloyd McClendon and the Mariners, people either didn't care that the Detroit Tigers hitting coach could possibly be a candidate for that position or didn't believe that there would be any interest on Seattle's part.
Besides, it was pure speculation by the Freep's Jon Paul Morosi, anyway. (And if you listen to his interview on The Detroit Tigers Podcast, he admitted that's the sort of thing he likes to do on that Freep.com blog.)
Well, it's all a moot point now. The Mariners announced their list of seven candidates to be interviewed for their managerial opening, and McClendon is not among them. The lack of veteran managers with previous experience on that list should indicate which direction Seattle will likely follow, according to the Seattle Times' Geoff Baker:
I keep hearing about how they want to go the Joe Maddon route. In other words, find a first-time manager with a high ceiling and give him a shot. Sounds great, in theory.
McClendon doesn't quite fit that profile, does he? Though it would be nice to see him get another shot down the line, Seattle obviously has something else in mind with an imposing renovation project to take on.

Guess Lloyd is okay to keep around...
is he the next Tiger skipper? Speaking of which, I’m of the mind that Leyland is on very thin ice, hence the lack of an extension. Bad April/May, he’s gone during the season in my opinion.
Anyone else think so? Anyone heard anything about potential successors?,
