The Quest For Relief: An Oliver Twist?
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Tigers have expressed an interest in free agent pitcher Darren Oliver. His agent confirmed to Jon Paul Morosi that Detroit is one of four teams currently looking to add the left-hander to their bullpen.
Last year with the Los Angeles Angels, the 38-year-old Oliver compiled a 7-1 record and and 2.88 ERA in 54 games, with 48 strikeouts and 16 walks in 72 innings. Though he wasn't exclusively a left-handed specialist for the Angels, it's worth noting that lefty batters hit .229/.277/.376 against him, managing just two home runs and six walks.
And as Rogo commented in our post about Trevor Hoffman a couple of days ago, Oliver could be more appealing because he has experience pitching in the American League. With him, there would be no question of whether or not he'd have to make adjustments.
Oliver might also come relatively cheaply, having made $2 million last season. Given the recent market for left-handed relievers (Three years and $12 million for Damaso Marte?), he could be something of a bargain - in terms of money and years - for any team that signs him.
Morosi also mentioned in his report that the Tigers have been in contact with several free agent relievers, including Trevor Hoffman, Brandon Lyon, David Weathers, and Arthur Rhodes. In addition, they've talked to the Florida Marlins about Kevin Gregg.
