The Quest For Relief: Scratch Gregg Off the List
If you had Kevin Gregg as your pick in the "Who will be the Detroit Tigers' closer in 2009?" pool, fold 'em up and move on. He will not be pitching in the Olde English D next season. According to several reports (I'm not sure who broke it first), the Florida Marlins have traded Gregg to the Chicago Cubs for Double-A prospect Jose Ceda.
Gregg joins an already well stocked bullpen, with Carlos Marmol likely set to take over as closer if Kerry Wood ends up leaving as a free agent. He could also give the Cubs an expensive set-up man if he wins a $4 million salary through arbitration, as expected.
Last year for Florida, Gregg complied 29 saves, a 7-8 record, and 3.41 ERA. He also tied for the major league lead in blown saves, with 11. Gregg recently had surgery to correct patella tendonitis in his left knee that surely contributed to his struggles at the end of the season.

Gregg/Wood
I guess Gregg would have done the job but if that puts Wood in play that even better for the Tigers. I also thought though, Wood has the Cub’s crest carved in his chest.

Was he really on anyone's list, though?
Hiding an injury from the team for a long time= not really what the Tigs need at the mo’ (having gone through that very thing to a lesser degree with Bondo and Jonesy).
Altho I will admit I spared a thought to a roster that could potentially have had Kevin Gregg and Gregg Zaun on it. That would have been kind of awesome.

Hmm...
Especially when the teammates fell in love, moved to Connecticut and got married so one of them could become Gregg Gregg.
