If you had Kevin Gregg as your pick in the "Who will be the Detroit Tigers' closer in 2009?" pool, fold 'em up and move on. He will not be pitching in the Olde English D next season. According to several reports (I'm not sure who broke it first), the Florida Marlins have traded Gregg to the Chicago Cubs for Double-A prospect Jose Ceda.
Gregg joins an already well stocked bullpen, with Carlos Marmol likely set to take over as closer if Kerry Wood ends up leaving as a free agent. He could also give the Cubs an expensive set-up man if he wins a $4 million salary through arbitration, as expected.
Last year for Florida, Gregg complied 29 saves, a 7-8 record, and 3.41 ERA. He also tied for the major league lead in blown saves, with 11. Gregg recently had surgery to correct patella tendonitis in his left knee that surely contributed to his struggles at the end of the season.
