The D-Train is Doing Leg Work
As a footnote to the Julio Lugo trade rumors, Jason Beck posted an update about Dontrelle Willis's off-season workout program:
As for Willis, he's currently working out at home on an offseason program designed to strengthen his lower body after a hyperextended knee in April contributed to his disappointing season. Agent Matt Sosnick said Sunday that Willis is focused on coming to Spring Training in a few months in the best shape of his life and trying to regain the form that earned him a three-year, $29 million contract from the Tigers last December.
Of course, "best shape of my life" is one of the (if not the) most worn-out Spring Training clichés. You never hear an agent or player say they're going to show up to Florida or Arizona camp in the worst shape of his life, do you?
The only question now, I suppose, is whether or not the Detroit Tigers or another team is going to be the presumed beneficiary of the D-Train's strength training.

I just can't imagine...
that another team wants Willis at this point. If this were the NBA, I could see the Red Sox taking him on and then releasing him (or whatever the Nuggets did with Antonio McDyess). Wouldn’t you think any team would want to see at least a half-season or more from Dontrelle before taking that plunge?
Come to think of it, shouldn’t the Tigers have waited a half-season or more before signing him to an extension?

What Mike said...
Though I’d prefer the D-Train was working on his head, instead of his legs. It’s not a lower body issue keeping him from throwing strikes, it’s something bouncing around in his noggin.
You can tweak his mechanics till Jim Leyland runs out of smokes, and it still won’t fix whatever mental block Willis has while on the mound.
