If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em
In our current economy, it's nice to see someone who lost a job quickly find gainful employment in his chosen profession. Unfortunately, as has become all too familiar in Michigan, former Detroit Tigers pitching coach Chuck Hernandez had to leave the state for his new job. But he didn't have to go that far, matriculating approximately 170 miles east.
Hernandez is the Cleveland Indians' new bullpen coach, replacing Luis Isaac, who was also sent into unemployment at the conclusion of this past season.
I know there's one school of thought that says this doesn't help the Tigers, as Hernandez could share have much to offer to scouting reports and game plans regarding his former team. But I'll counter with the snarky opposing view. If you largely blame Hernandez for the performance of Detroit's pitching staff performed in 2008, then perhaps you'll like the effect he could have on the Indians' bullpen.
