Notes From the Sunday Papers
Here are a couple of other things from Nick Cafardo's Sunday Baseball Notes column in today's Boston Globe (and I really tried to find other Tigers stuff elsewhere). Of course, Detroit's possible interest in trading Magglio Ordonez is mentioned. But then Cafardo adds this little nugget:
Another player the Tigers are dangling is setup man Fernando Rodney. They are desperately looking for someone to close.
I could see if the Tigers might be a bit frustrated with Rodney's inconsistency (and inability to stay healthy), but would getting a closer compensate for a set-up crew that would be weakened with such a deal? Or is there depth in the farm system with pitchers like Casey Fien, Ryan Perry, and Cody Satterwhite to supply an adequate replacement?
And for all the anxiety expressed this week over Jason Varitek perhaps coming to Detroit (which might have more to do with Scott Boras trying to drum up a market for his client than actual interest from the Tigers), maybe we all got worked up for nothing, based on this anecdote:
One NL official thinks there's a limited market for Varitek and doesn't buy Detroit as a destination for him.
Oh, here's something from another paper. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News has a piece on how popular the Rangers should be this winter because of their catching depth. But Texas is looking for young starting pitching in return, and well...
Detroit also needs a catcher, but the Tigers' system is quite thin at pitcher.
Rats. Dave Dombrowski will probably have to look elsewhere for a catcher.
