2008 SBN Baseball Awards: Rookie of the Year
This week, we'll be posting the results for each of Major League Baseball's regular season awards, as voted upon by the SB Nation baseball bloggers. Today's announcement is for the 2008 Manager of the Year balloting.
Today, we present the 2008 SBN Baseball Award winner for American League Rookie of the Year:
| American League | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Evan Longoria | 15 | 1 | - | 78 |
| Mike Aviles | 1 | 5 | 4 | 24 |
| Alexei Ramirez | 1 | 2 | 3 | 14 |
| Armando Galarraga | - | 3 | 3 | 12 |
| Joba Chamberlain | - | 3 | 1 | 10 |
| Jacoby Ellsbury | - | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Brad Ziegler | - | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| David Murphy | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| Denard Span | - | - | 2 | 2 |
| Chris Davis | - | - | 1 | 1 |
Once again, I'm surprised we didn't have a unanimous winner. Evan Longoria wasn't just the best rookie in the American League, he was one of the best at his position and could be for years to come. Had the Tigers not finished last, I wonder if Armando Galarraga would've gotten some first-place love?
Galarraga ended up with my third-place vote, behind Longoria and Alexei Ramirez. (I wonder if he would've been third, if not for that grand slam he hit against the Tigers in that final game of the season?)
Here is the National League ballot:
| National League | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Geovany Soto | 18 | 1 | - | 93 |
| Joey Votto | - | 10 | 8 | 38 |
| Jair Jurrjens | 1 | 6 | 6 | 29 |
| Edinson Volquez | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| Jay Bruce | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| Ian Stewart | - | - | 2 | 4 |
| John Bowker | - | - | 1 | 1 |
| Johnny Cueto | - | - | 1 | 1 |
| Blake DeWitt | - | - | 1 | 1 |
Hey, a first-place vote for Jair Jurrjens! Boy, that's a testament to the organization that signed and developed him. That's the kind of pitcher you can put in your starting rotation for years to come. Oh... never mind.
You can see how each of the SB Nation baseball bloggers voted at their respective sites, as we'll all be sharing our ballots. The remaining SBN Baseball Awards will be announced in succession over the next two days. Our picks for the Cy Young Award will be posted tomorrow, followed by the Most Valuable Player winners on Thursday.
