2008 SBN Baseball Awards: Cy Young Award
This week, we'll be posting the results for each of Major League Baseball's regular season awards, as voted upon by the SB Nation baseball bloggers. On Monday, the Manager of the Year awards went to the Rays' Joe Maddon and the Cubs' Lou Piniella. Yesterday, the Rookie of the Year winners were the Rays' Evan Longoria and the Cubs' Geovany Soto. Let's see if somebody besides some Rays or Cubs can grab some hardware.
Today, we present the 2008 SBN Cy Young Award winner for the American League:
| American League | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cliff Lee | 13 | 5 | - | 80 |
| Roy Halladay | 5 | 10 | 1 | 56 |
| Jon Lester | - | 1 | 5 | 8 |
| Francisco Rodriguez | - | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Mike Mussina | - | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Daisuke Matsuzaka | - | - | 4 | 4 |
| Ervin Santana | - | - | 2 | 2 |
| Justin Duchscherer | - | - | 1 | 1 |
| Joe Nathan | - | - | 1 | 1 |
Would Cliff Lee have been a unanimous choice if the Cleveland Indians hadn't finished in third place with a .500 record? I suppose we'll never know, but it's not like Roy Halladay wouldn't have been a deserving winner, winning 20 games, pitching almost 250 innings, and throwing more than 200 strikeouts.
My ballot followed the first two placeholders, with my third-place vote going to Francisco Rodriguez. And really, I was leaning toward Lester, but thought K-Rod deserved at least some recognition for his 62-save season.
Here is the National League ballot:
| National League | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tim Lincecum | 14 | 2 | 1 | 77 |
| Johan Santana | 1 | 8 | 3 | 32 |
| Brandon Webb | - | 4 | 7 | 19 |
| CC Sabathia | 3 | - | 1 | 16 |
| Cole Hamels | - | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Roy Oswalt | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| Ryan Dempster | - | - | 2 | 2 |
| Dan Haren | - | - | 1 | 1 |
| Edinson Volquez | - | - | 1 | 1 |
This is the one NL award I really wish I could've voted for. So many good candidates to choose from! Although I think I would've ultimately gone with Tim Lincecum, with Brandon Webb and CC Sabathia to follow.
You can see how each of the SB Nation baseball bloggers voted at their respective sites, as we'll all be sharing our ballots. The last remaining SBN Baseball Award will be announced tomorrow, as we name our Most Valuable Player winners.
