Miguel Cabrera is in the Money

Billfer just tapped me on the shoulder (instant message style) and alerted me to the following breaking news from ESPN.com.

Enrique Rojas is reporting that Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers have reached agreement on an eight-year, $153.3 million contract.  The deal will be signed on Monday, pending Cabrera passing a physical.

Cabrera's contract will be the richest in Tigers' history, surpassing the five-year, $75 million Magglio Ordonez signed with Detroit in 2004.  And that breeze you'll be feeling across the Midwest tomorrow is the sigh of relief from Tigers fans, secure in the knowledge that the crown jewel of their team's offseason shopping spree will be sticking around for quite a while.  No more need to worry that the Tigers gave up most of their farm system for a two-year rental.

More details will be posted as they become available, including whether or not this deal incorporates the one-year, $11.3 million contract Cabrera signed back in January or supersedes it.

Sigh........so glad that happened!  We might have a bit more shopping to do, however.
