Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Checked Out: Athletics 10, Tigers 2

Should I even bother with a recap?  I didn't watch this game, and I don't know how many of you did.  And if you did, how long did you stick with it once the Tigers fell behind?  Runs just aren't coming for this team, and having some regulars on the bench for some day-game-after-a-night-game rest wasn't going to help matters.  The lineup just stinks right now.

This afternoon's result was probably utterly predictable, wasn't it?  Following two tough walk-off losses and facing a getaway flight back home to Detroit, the Tigers were bound to be checked out.  It's not like these guys were mentally strong to begin with, calling it a day at any sign of adversity.  And for an extra kick while they're down, one of the few guys who was playing to or above expectations - Ramon Santiago - is likely headed for the disabled list with a separated shoulder.

At least the matinee start time isn't going to conflict with tonight's Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Maybe the Detroit Red Wings can remind some of us why we enjoy watching sports.

Awful!

When Maggs threw his helmet down and then threw his bat, I knew it was a bad day. Larish is awful. Santiago will prob go on the DL and they’ll send someone up from Toledo. Do we have anyone good down there who can play SS or maybe they’ll just put Carlos back in his old position again. I’ve never complained about Leyland, but he’s lost control of this team. imho

Lowest point of the year

And that’s saying something. Seriously, I do think someone is going to be fired-perhaps tomorrow. Probably Lloyd. It probably won’t help, just as canning Leyland wouldn’t help either. But Ilitch and DD are going to do something eventually.

I don’t really think anything can be fixed with this team until the players simply start playing better. Leyland has pushed every button he could, both in the lineup and psychologically. There’s nothing left to try. The guy passed the panic threshold long ago.

To be honest, I was glad to see Magglio melt down. He’s the most calm of anyone, and if he’s pissed, things are bad. It’s on the players-particularly the guys at the plate. I’m not sure it will get better anytime soon, though.

Pack it in on this season?

Unless they pull off an 8 win in 10 games streak in the next few weeks, this season is probably not going to turn out well. I know they’re not really all that far back, but they’re 11 games under .500. The problem isn’t how far back they are in their division, the problem is that they’ve got a terrible record, which they’ve earned.

As much as it pains me to say, they need to trade a few guys. Guys Tigers fans like, but who actually have value. If Rodney and Zumaya prove themselves to be healthy, one or both should be on the block. Robertson, Bonderman, Willis should be on the block. Granderson, Polanco, Renteria, Guillen, Inge should be on the block. They need to retool a team that somehow got slow, old, and bad defensively seemingly overnight.

If this thing doesn’t turn around in the next few weeks, sell off some parts and retool.

Not Grandy

I agree with much of what you said, but this team should not trade Granderson. Granderson’s presence is the only reason Maybin was expendable. Grandy will be the face of this team for at least the next 5 years. He still needs to hit left handed pitching better, but overall he is the Tigers’ most complete player.

Amen!

Not Grandy. Oh, no. He’s the best.

Oh, look, the Red Wings just got another goal. YEA!!!

It’s still too early to decide which core of players you want to build around and with. I love all the guys, but Grandy is the kind of guy you want to build around.

Lloyd...

I really like Lloyd McClendon he is a HOOSIER (!) and he gives back in his community of “the region”. With that said, IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE. Do I blame him for the lack luster effort and numbers? ABSOLUTELY NOT. That is right on top of the players, but there needs to be a change of some sort. Why not give them a fresh person to work with on their swings (attitudes???!). I think that they could find a position for Lloyd to take care of as not to fire him.

What do you all think? Something has to give/change. I am not a supporter of those that are calling for Leyland, but something (anything) needs to happen…..

Fire Lloyd?

I think everybody from Ann Arbor is just dragging out their old t-shirts and banners to use again. :-)

I bet Lloyd does drive

his Carr back and forth to Chesterton, rather than fly.

I hadn’t even thought about that, nice. With all things IU blowing up in the past 6 months, I didn’t pay much attention the drama in AA.
