What is the fascination with Zumaya?
What is the fascination with Zumaya? I mean come on! This guy suck's why he is even in the big show is beyond me. He throws hard, big fricking deal! The man’s skill level isn't even mediocre. Trade Him Mr. Dombrowski. Please, and make a better deal than your last one. Farnsworth for Pudge? What the hell was that? I hope Mr. Ilitch received a whole lot of dough along with that bum.

Well
He and Rodney were very effective in the WS run of 2006. Didn’t they both have like 2 something ERA’s? Obviously that isn’t the case now.

Very astute observation, However!
The key word in your comment was “2006”

Its still OK to keep him
What happens if he turns it around like Brad Lidge did this season for the Phillies? He was terrible last year, and he’s perfect this year. Injuries ruined this season for Zumaya, but give him another chance next year. He’s got a great arm when its healthy.

Suuure
and if he’s not performing next year then maybe 2010 or 11 or 12!

you act like the man is 35 and past his prime… he’s 23, the youngest player currently on the roster

23 and already plagued with injuries. He is a weak and fragile player. and will only become weaker. Zumaya is the Andre Ware of MLB. just remember this conversation when he’s on the DL or every time he blows a lead.

You seem strangely fascinated by Zumaya

I am? I haven't even started my thread on Rodney or Jones.
I am fascinated, fascinated by the fact that when I see Joel striding out of the pen. I and a very large % of people watching can predict the lead shrinking quickly. so quickly it turns inside out and becomes a LOSS! and also Predict that within hours of said loss Joel will reveal yet another injury. I’m sure it’s in an attempt to excuse his performance. but none the less, this senario plays out far to often.

Thats ridiculous
I don’t know the man personally. I’m sure he’s a great guy. He just doesn’t belong on the mound in MLB. now at a carnival showing his tremendous speed. while at the same time completely missing the broad side of a barn. THAT Would be a show!

Kerry Wood
Another example of turning around his career after injuries. It seemed like every year he was hurt, him and Mark Prior, and this year he’s the Cubs closer.

Sheesh, OK I'll Cave the Dreamers win
I’m sure you are all correct, I mean even a blind squirrell finds a nut once in a while. by the end of next season the tigers will have won the WS and michigan will throw “The Incredible ZOOMaya” a ticker tape parade!

I think its reasonable to assume that the spectre of a 100 mph fastball will always fascinate coaches, management, and scouts alike (to say nothing of fans). Always has, always will. Particularly if the player in question happens to possess a strong secondary pitch – say a sharp power curve. Now if that player also happens to be just 24 years old, and coming off major shoulder surgery, its also fair and reasonable to assume that those same people will continue to be tantalized by his raw talents, even if there does exist a strong chance that those talents will never fully materialize into tangible skills.
I hope that this small comment has done something to placate your desire to find out precisely, “[what the fascination is] with Zumaya.”

Agreed
I understand and agree with your comment Corey. I just don’t understand why! after several “I pitched poorly ’cause i got a boo boo” games. followed by 15 day D.L.‘s and a major surgery. (A surgery in which most pitcher come out afterward pitching strong). why keep paying and paying for ZIP in return! use his youth and speed to get a proven consistant pitcher. the Tigers fell for his youth and speed, I’m sure someone else will also.
It’s like spending $100,000 for a stick of wet dynamite. Because it’s new (young) and it might work (perform) when it dries out. (heal’s)

And if you read my "Fixing the Detroit Tigers"
Post, you’ll see that I actually recommend trading his talent and promise for someone who can actually get the job done. Throwing 100 is nice, but if it isn’t effective, it isn’t effective. Nathan, Soria, Rivera, K-Rod, Putz… none of those guys throw 95. They can usually crank it u[p into that range, but K-Rod and Mo work in the 90-92 range, Nathan at 93, and Putz and Soria in the 93-94 area.
Oftentimes less is more.
