Question for you guys?

Given your recent issues with Sheffield, I know my Phils could use another RH bat.  I haven't seen many Detroit games this year, and I know he's getting up there in age, so what's he got left for the outfield?  Could he play right?  I also heard some accusations about him making errors on purpose to get Detroit to trade him and such.  Any truth there?  Thanks for your help guys.  Later.

I don't think he has the arm for right anymore

But I threw the Phillies out there as a possible fit for Sheffield, too. There’s some question as to whether his shoulder can take the throwing anymore, but Sheff claims he’s fully healthy now. His legs and range aren’t really the problem.

Left field seems like a better fit for Sheffield, but Pat Burrell is entrenched there, isn’t he? Or is that a shuffle the Phillies could make to accommodate a needed right-handed bat?

ohh and there’s no way no how Burrell can play right… it’d be a circus

Pat the Bat

Across the board, I don’t think Sheffield would be any kind of upgrade over The Bat. Both Burrell and Sheff are patient at the plate (well, Sheff used to be), and both are less-than-good fielders. However, Burrell is younger and has stayed relatively healthy over his career, and has many good seasons still ahead of him, IMO.

.266/.392./.552/.944 with 27 dingers and 68 RBIs so far in 395 ABs (84 BB to 98 Ks – a great ratio). Basically, I think the Phils would be nuts to replace Burrell.

Unless you’re say that Burrell gets moved to right and Sheff becomes the starting LF. Sheff couldn’t be worse than Geoff Jenkins, although I think Jayson Werth is having a decent season without getting a ton of ABs.

Oh I want to keep Pat, actually hoping they extend him for 2 or 3 more years. I’d see if I could deposit Sheff in right. His arm was what worried me. Pat is a solid defender (1 error in the past 140 or so games I think), but his footspeed is that of a one-legged troll hauling a piano. Victorino is a speed demon in center, so he shades to help Pat as much as possible. I kinda figured Sheff could still run because I think he had like 22 stolen bases last year or something, but I need him to be able to throw as well.

Jayson Werth is having a great year for a platoon player, but adding Sheff would actually fix a few problems at once. We need another good RH bat off the bench. Putting Sheff in the lineup lets Werth fill that role; it also allows us to get rid of So Taguchi (thank Christ). Werth also then becomes a excellent player to have because he can play all three outfield positions if any of the starters go down/need a day off.

Right now, we’re having trouble manufacturing runs because the bottom of our lineup isn’t producing like it did last year. Our typical lineup is:

Rollins
Victorino
Utley
Howard
Burrell
Werth
Feliz
Ruiz
P

We’ve been more successful with Utley hitting 2 (splitting the lefties) and Victorino hitting 7th. Hard to do right now, but switch out Sheffield for Werth.

Rollins (S)
Utley (L)
Sheffield/Burrell®
Howard (L)
Burrell/Sheffield®
Feliz®
Victorino (S)
Ruiz®
P

I just thought he’d be worth a look if he could handle right…

Speaking of the Phillies

(I like the Phillies a lot, they def. have my NL allegence), why does Manuel give so much playing time to Geoff Jenkins? He never does anything and Jason Werth is arguably better in the field and defidently better with the bat. The bullpen is solid with Lidge and (former Tiger!) Chad Durbin and the one-two of J-Roll and Victorino is awesome. Both of them can steal and Utley runs well too. The Phils are a great team to watch and acctually play for runs and don’t just go for the long ball every time like Detroit has seemed to do lately. The rotation could be a little better though…

To awnser the question though, Sheff doesn’t really have it in the OF and he is the dumbest human being in the world, so I don’t know if Charlie Manuel could deal with him, but we don’t want him in Detroit much longer.

Jenkins

The theory behind having Jenkins is because I can hit RH pitching better than Werth and Jenkins has had good career numbers against RHers. I do like Werth alot as well, but he is not an everyday player. he is prone to injury and as I said, doesn’t hit RHers very well. I forget his splits offhand; but they’re not good. Jenkins has an all or nothing swing (he has put up good power numbers in the past), but I’m pretty sure his “prime” is past him. Trust me, we all say a small prayer every time he comes to the dish.

sheff

Yea i am sure manuel would put up with sheff if those rumors are true. Manuel doesnt put up with anything. Rollins has sit two games this year because one he didnt run out a fly ball. , and two he was a little late for batting practice. Sheffield is outdated and if i were the tigers i would gladly hand him over to the slumping philles.

Slumping is being 11 games out of the AL Central, not 2 out of the NL East.
