Game 122: Orioles (58-62) at Tigers (59-62)
Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers, Aug 15, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Chris Waters (1-0, 4.50) vs.
Nate Robertson (7-8, 5.84)
With their newly shuffled lineup, the Tigers welcome another below-.500 team to Comerica Park for a three-game weekend series. Detroit's post-All-Star break schedule got off to a disappointing start when they split a four-game series with the Orioles, and that probably should've given us an indication about how the rest of this season might go.
Chris Waters makes just his third start of the season for Baltimore, and this might be sort of a rubber match for him. In his first outing, Waters was outstanding against the Angels in Anaheim, giving up just one hit over eight innings. Next time out, however, he was shelled for six runs and seven hits by the Indians in just four innings at home. So what will we see tonight from him?
For that matter, which Nate Robertson will the Tigers get this evening? Against Oakland last Sunday, he was pretty close to great, allowing just one run and five hits over 7 2/3 innings. But that was against the Oakland A's. About a month ago in Baltimore, Robertson got rocked for seven runs in just 2 1/3 innings, arguably his worst game of the season. At home, however, he has a winning record and his ERA is about three-and-a-half runs better.
Camden Chat has your SB Nation opposing view for this weekend's series.

I don’t know if I’m ready to see him again. I still have nightmares.

Awesome
Glad you enjoyed it. There was an article in the NY Times yesterday about how many copies of the graphic novel have been selling since the trailer was released. Pretty amazing.

E9?
Bad scoring decision. It wasn’t a perfect throw by Magglio, but Inge could’ve had that.

Wow, that was just ugly
Inge at least has to just catch the ball, regardless of whether he can tag the runner.

Miggy
This has been a down year for him, but even still, how fun is it going to be to watch this guy hit for the next 7 years. I heart him.
Not a bad year for a down year
I agree; he’s only going to get better.

I am on the verge of unleashing a torrent of profanity
What in the hell is going on here? 4-0 Orioles? And Melvin Mora kills them yet again?

They can't possibly keep Nate in the rotation next year, can they?
He stinks.
Unless they’re going to do something radical, like try him at closer, they have to try and move him.

What a 'stache!
Tonight’s home plate ump could be on ‘Deadwood.’

Ian (and other Watchmen enthusiasts)
Here’s Kevin Smith’s exuberant take on the footage of Watchmen he’s seen so far.
Sweet
Thanks for sending that along. I just watched some video interviews with the cast.

Wake up?
Polanco with a two-run homer!
That was a home run over the old fence, too. Always impressive.

I remember the old days of the Coma...
when Juan Gonzalez would complain that the fences were too far. Ah, good times. Not really.
Just showed D-Train's stats w/ Toledo tonight
Eight hits in five innings? Ugh.
But only two runs and one walk, with four strikeouts.

What are the chances Lopez allows a run here?
Hasn’t exactly been lights out lately.

Anyone notice all the tag-on-toe articles lately?
Knobler had an interesting one today at CBS.sportsline.
Yeah, I read that
Hard to argue with what Knobler wrote. I just wish he’d have been critical like that when he was on the Tigers beat.
Here’s the link:

I thought he made some good points.
Interesting that he is the one writer who is not forecasting a scorched-earth payroll deduction. Henning’s article yesterday made it sound like we would all be better off to not watch for the next three years.
5 extra base hits off of Nate tonight.
Not including the adventurous single in the 2nd. That pretty much says it all.
The O's are just crushing the ball all over tonight
Poor Curtis is running himself ragged trying to track those balls down in center.

Welcome back my friends
to the show that never ends, we’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside.
Or
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
It was interference
Sure, there are different ways to slide but you could see the guy throw his hand up right in front of the ball.
I don't know
His arms coming up seemed like a natural motion going into the slide to me.

Interference
I know that is one of the ways they can slide but that’s on an automatic DP if his hands don’t get thrown up there. Any other time they’d be sliding with their feet or reaching around to try and touch the bag with their fingers. He put them up right in Poly’s face as he was ready to throw. Can’t agree with you, Ian.
Oh, goody, we got the rollercoaster back!
Are you kidding me?
What, did Phelps win by his fingertips there? Incredible!

Wow
From a distance, it looked like the other dude won. That was so close.

Micheal's coach
Thought he came in second until it came on the board
Sometimes....
I really do feel like the thing I like most about this team is that I only have to follow it for forty or so more games. At the same time, I will dread the winter without Tigers games.
Symptom of the sickness, I suppose.
I think we can dispel the idea...
that Jones was just terrible because he was hurt.
