Game 133: Indians (64-67) at Tigers (64-68)
Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers, Aug 27, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Fausto Carmona (6-5, 4.40) vs.
Justin Verlander (10-13, 4.42)
Fourth place? Yes, indeed. That's where the Tigers sit in the AL Central coming into tonight's game, now a 1/2 game behind the Indians. But if they don't like it, they can do something about it right away by salvaging a win in the finale of this series.
Justin Verlander has won his last two starts, allowing no earned runs over 12 2/3 innings. However, against the Indians this season, he has a 1-3 record and 5.84 ERA in four starts. For what it's worth, that one win came at home, where Verlander held the Tribe to two runs and two hits (with seven strikeouts) over seven innings.
Fausto Carmona has also pitched well in his last two outings, giving up just two earned runs in 12 innings against fearsome Texas and Anaheim lineups. Carmona has won his two starts versus the Tigers this season, posting a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings. Both of those games were at Cleveland.
Jeff Larish is fresh off the I-75 shuttle from Toledo to start tonight at third base for the continually aching Carlos Guillen. Larish handed the Mud Hens baton to Chris Lambert, who heads back down to the minors - at least until rosters expand next week.

I have to get on here to vent...
before i kick my dog or something. What the hell is wrong with these guys? Verlander blows away sizmore the first time on fastballs… was way ahead of him with fastballs.. throws a breaking ball right over the heart of the plate? I can’t believe I watch this crap every night.
Jeff
Yep. Baseball is done for us right now. Bring on football.
Too bad we’ll all become enemies. I’m a Bears fan.
at this point 3-1 feels like the game is over already. sure they have 2 on right now, but somebody please tell the last time anyone has come through in the clutch? It’s been so long i can’t remember.
Jeff
Hello all
My first Game thread in a week or so. Let’s hope they can get the win tonight, I want to at least see them finish ahead of the Indians.
Yes!
Is that really asking so much? Finish ahead of the team that has lost almost all of its star players this season!

In a way it's ironic
We all thought the Tigers and Indians would be battling it out in the Central. Didn’t think it’d be for third.
MFer...
Verlander cannot be considered an “ace” and keep doing this crap. Is he just out of gas already?
I'm just curious...
What the fuck does it say on the Tigers’ scouting report for Kelly Shoppach?
Somebody set fire to that damn thing. And maybe fire the scout who put it together.

agree
I think it’d fit right in on Justice. Starts a bit slow, but I like the length and the melody. If it was on Justice, it’d be one of the weaker songs though…
should the Tigers trade Curty?
I love him, but he’s one of the few guys who would bring a real haul back.
I don't think so.
You know how hard it is to find a really good center fielder? Hell, we hadn’t anything close to “really good” since Chet Lemon before Granderson came along. Pettis, Curtis, Hunter, Sanchez, etc.
I agree he'd be hard to replace
but that’s sort of the point, he’s a valuable asset, with a team friendly contract.
Agreed: Center fielders are too valuable
If Gorkys Hernandez was still in the system, that’d be one thing.
But I think Curtis is too much of a core player to trade. This eventually needs to become his team, transitioning over from the Pudge-Carlos Guillen-etc. leadership.

trade him to the Yankees
for Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson (not sure the Yanks would do this deal).
Who plays CF for the Tigers?
Clete? Clevlen?

in that particular scenario
Austin Jackson would.
Like I said, I love Curty, but the Tigers have several bad contracts and an older lineup. One of the few guys they could trade for a boatload is Curtis.
jones
anyone else think its complete garbage for jones to leave the team and go home? injured or not hes a member of the team and should stay with them. just goes to show the me me me attitude of this years squad.
It does raise an eyebrow
Can he do more/better rehab back home? Is he sulking because it looks like he may be done for the season?

I hate being forced to Smell the Glove.

holy crap, Choo crushed that
he’s only got 10 career HRs! Imagine how far one of Cleveland’s slugger would’ve hit that one…
So...
Who are you all rooting for in the playoffs? I guess I’m going with the Cubs…just to end all the “Curse” nonsense with the media.
gotta say im pulling for the rays. no respect for them still in the media. everyone is waiting for them to fall
This feeling could change
But the Tigers have kind of crushed my love of baseball this year. I don’t watch nearly as many other games as I have in previous years.
I’m sure that will change come the playoffs. But it might be a week or two.

Having said that
The Cubs or Rays would be a great story, but I love the way the Angels play baseball.

Seeing other saying it or literally seeing it?
I think the layman baseball observer wouldn’t catch a lot of the stuff hitters and coaches notice.
But I haven’t seen anyone write that recently, either. It’s certainly one explanation in a season that’s crying out for them.

Inge refuses to learn.
Strikeout. I’ve never understood why he always gets a free pass from the casual Tigers fan. He sucks. He’s always sucked. And he will always suck.
For Maggs
It could be a slump-buster.
