Game 133: Indians (64-67) at Tigers (64-68)

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers, Aug 27, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Fausto Carmona (6-5, 4.40) vs. Justin Verlander (10-13, 4.42)

Fourth place?  Yes, indeed.  That's where the Tigers sit in the AL Central coming into tonight's game, now a 1/2 game behind the Indians.  But if they don't like it, they can do something about it right away by salvaging a win in the finale of this series.

Justin Verlander has won his last two starts, allowing no earned runs over 12 2/3 innings.  However, against the Indians this season, he has a 1-3 record and 5.84 ERA in four starts.  For what it's worth, that one win came at home, where Verlander held the Tribe to two runs and two hits (with seven strikeouts) over seven innings.

Fausto Carmona has also pitched well in his last two outings, giving up just two earned runs in 12 innings against fearsome Texas and Anaheim lineups.  Carmona has won his two starts versus the Tigers this season, posting a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings.  Both of those games were at Cleveland.

Jeff Larish is fresh off the I-75 shuttle from Toledo to start tonight at third base for the continually aching Carlos Guillen.  Larish handed the Mud Hens baton to Chris Lambert, who heads back down to the minors - at least until rosters expand next week.

I have to get on here to vent...

before i kick my dog or something. What the hell is wrong with these guys? Verlander blows away sizmore the first time on fastballs… was way ahead of him with fastballs.. throws a breaking ball right over the heart of the plate? I can’t believe I watch this crap every night.

Yep. Baseball is done for us right now. Bring on football.

Too bad we’ll all become enemies. I’m a Bears fan.

I’m a Saints fan… man I disliked you guys 2 years ago….

at this point 3-1 feels like the game is over already. sure they have 2 on right now, but somebody please tell the last time anyone has come through in the clutch? It’s been so long i can’t remember.

Hello all

My first Game thread in a week or so. Let’s hope they can get the win tonight, I want to at least see them finish ahead of the Indians.

by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 27, 2008 8:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes!

Is that really asking so much? Finish ahead of the team that has lost almost all of its star players this season!

oh believe me so do I… I live in Cleveland.. my phone has been none stop with freakin’ indians fans gloating….

In a way it's ironic

We all thought the Tigers and Indians would be battling it out in the Central. Didn’t think it’d be for third.

MFer...

Verlander cannot be considered an “ace” and keep doing this crap. Is he just out of gas already?

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 8:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm just curious...

What the fuck does it say on the Tigers’ scouting report for Kelly Shoppach?

Somebody set fire to that damn thing. And maybe fire the scout who put it together.

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 27, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It says...

…the same thing it says for Melvin Mora. And Luke Scott. And Grady Sizemore. And…

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so for people who are fans

what does everyone think of Metallica’s new song?

by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 27, 2008 8:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Haven't heard it.

Is it better than the last stuff they had out?

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree

I think it’d fit right in on Justice. Starts a bit slow, but I like the length and the melody. If it was on Justice, it’d be one of the weaker songs though…

by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 27, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The vocals...

James’ voice has changed a lot since then. But I agree about the music.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

should the Tigers trade Curty?

I love him, but he’s one of the few guys who would bring a real haul back.

by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 27, 2008 8:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think so.

You know how hard it is to find a really good center fielder? Hell, we hadn’t anything close to “really good” since Chet Lemon before Granderson came along. Pettis, Curtis, Hunter, Sanchez, etc.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree he'd be hard to replace

but that’s sort of the point, he’s a valuable asset, with a team friendly contract.

by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 27, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed: Center fielders are too valuable

If Gorkys Hernandez was still in the system, that’d be one thing.

But I think Curtis is too much of a core player to trade. This eventually needs to become his team, transitioning over from the Pudge-Carlos Guillen-etc. leadership.

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 27, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

trade him to the Yankees

for Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson (not sure the Yanks would do this deal).

by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 27, 2008 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

in that particular scenario

Austin Jackson would.

Like I said, I love Curty, but the Tigers have several bad contracts and an older lineup. One of the few guys they could trade for a boatload is Curtis.

jones

anyone else think its complete garbage for jones to leave the team and go home? injured or not hes a member of the team and should stay with them. just goes to show the me me me attitude of this years squad.

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It does raise an eyebrow

Can he do more/better rehab back home? Is he sulking because it looks like he may be done for the season?

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 27, 2008 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The last time he was on the dl he returned home and did some rehab at the clinic that the doctor that does all those shoulders injuries has so it might be he is going to try to rehab there again

by ashmark on Aug 27, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Might as well face it

You’re addicted to Glove

holy crap, Choo crushed that

he’s only got 10 career HRs! Imagine how far one of Cleveland’s slugger would’ve hit that one…

So...

Who are you all rooting for in the playoffs? I guess I’m going with the Cubs…just to end all the “Curse” nonsense with the media.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 9:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

im hoping they lose. i love to see cubs fans suffer

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

gotta say im pulling for the rays. no respect for them still in the media. everyone is waiting for them to fall

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't root for them.

Still bitter about Percival.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why?

injuries happen. we all thought he was done. im happy for him.

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course.

But I’m bitter…not logical.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hahahaha dude im the same way on a lot of things

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This feeling could change

But the Tigers have kind of crushed my love of baseball this year. I don’t watch nearly as many other games as I have in previous years.

I’m sure that will change come the playoffs. But it might be a week or two.

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 27, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Having said that

The Cubs or Rays would be a great story, but I love the way the Angels play baseball.

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 27, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rooting for the Cubs.

I would like to see Tram get another world title.

by rook34 on Aug 27, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good call.

I didn’t even think of that.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Angels...

…have a Weaver. I can’t root for them, either.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree ian, but i know i shouldnt root for the enemiesin our division, but i would love to see the AL playoff teams be the rays, white sox, angels and twinkies.

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have read it that...

JV is tipping his pitches. Any of you seeing that?

by rook34 on Aug 27, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Seeing other saying it or literally seeing it?

I think the layman baseball observer wouldn’t catch a lot of the stuff hitters and coaches notice.

But I haven’t seen anyone write that recently, either. It’s certainly one explanation in a season that’s crying out for them.

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 27, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gary would have hit that one 450 feet.

by HavocRox on Aug 27, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He could if he was in left field and not DHing.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Inge refuses to learn.

Strikeout. I’ve never understood why he always gets a free pass from the casual Tigers fan. He sucks. He’s always sucked. And he will always suck.

Hard as the guy tries...

he could not hit his way out of a paper bag.

If Schoppach goes yard...

I’m done for the year.

by Rogo on Aug 27, 2008 10:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is a team that doesn’t care anymore. They’ve been done for the year for two weeks already.

Jeff
