Game 113: Tigers (55-57) at White Sox (66-44)
Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox, Aug 6, 2008 8:11 PM EDT
Justin Verlander (8-11, 4.49) vs.
John Danks (8-4, 3.31)
Grumble, grumble...
Okay, I'll add a little bit more than that. Mostly because I took the time to boot the computer up and all that.
I hope (and believe me, I realize the cruel irony in using that word tonight) that Justin Verlander throws strikes tonight. Because after so much of the b-b... I almost can't even say it... bullpen was burned off last night, he will probably have to pitch deep into this game. This 110-pitches-in-five-innings junk is not what the Tigers need.
Just to make you feel better, Verlander's career record against the White Sox is -7 with a 6.03 ERA. At U.S. Cellular Field, he's 0-4 with a 6.19 ERA.
But the schedule says this game has to be played, so here we go...

Yet another Leyland waste of our time
Nice to see Renteria and Sheff in the lineup!

either leyland is a very positive thinker or a very large asshole
by HavocRox on Aug 6, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just don't understand anymore
Leyland makes big media news two days ago on how there will be changes…...the only change I see thus far is no Joyce and more Raburn. If I was a cat (Tiger) I would be on my last life of faith – see I’ve lost eight so far (nine lives – get it). Fine I can live with more Raburn…..but why still all the old, rusty parts. The Tigers are on the very fringe of losing it. I still have one life of faith left due to having five more with Chicago and three more with the Twins. Why, why, why is Renteria and Sheff in the line-up? What the hell does Renteria have to do to kicked off the team? He freakin gave the White Sox a fourth out in the 14th inning yesterday. As pissed as I am, I can live with Zoom Zoom’s pitch – the batter did have to go down and get that one. Renteria needs to leave now. The only way to energize the Tigers is to get some youth in the line-up. I don’t care what management says….it’s time to panic now. Why keep playing players that got us in the mess the first place…..at least if Clete and Joyce play they will get more experieince for next season.
This f**king team as put me through so many crappy emotions this year. I was at a block party last night and I joked when I left that I was going to go watch the Tigers and see how they were going to blow the game…...I stayed up to 1am to watch them blow up…this joke isn’t funny anymore.
I live in Grand Rapids and bought tix for this Sunday’s game back in March…...I’ve never been so unexcited to go to a Tigers game in my life. I bought tix back in March to go to a Sox/Tigers September game in Chicago. I can only imagine how fun that is going to be.
What a waste of money this team is.

Unfortunately, there's nothing around that ballpark
It’s in a terrible neighborhood.
Unless it’s improved in the six years since I’ve been there.

no
I’m not actually watching the Tigers yet. Figure I might as well see some other baseball teams, as the Tigers aren’t going to be in the hunt. Right now I’m watching A’s/Jays because I wanted to see how Gio Gonzalez looks.

Granderson
Ummmmm….once again…what the hell iss wrong wiith Leyland…....why is Granderson out of the line-up? The guy is playing in his home town, he’s jacked to be in Chicago, he hit a home run last night and his thank you is to take a seat on the bench.
If Leyland wants to give him a freakin day off can’t he be proactive and do it in Tampa instead of against a team we’re trying to beat so we can make the playoffs?
by MSU4LIF on Aug 6, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
didnt they ALL just have a day off on monday???? why does he need to be giving our main players unneeded breaks?
by HavocRox on Aug 6, 2008 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
goes back to him being a slave to platoon splits
Danks is a leftie, and Grandy has historically struggled against them.

I thought....
if you break down the stats that Grandy is hitting .300 against lefties this year?
by MSU4LIF on Aug 6, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he is
but still, Leyland has a history of sitting Granderson against tough lefties.

Volquez has been terrible since the break..
by explosivo2k2 on Aug 6, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
probably would say no
Gio had some rough outings in AAA, so over the last few months I don’t know if he’d necessarily outperform Volquez.
by ThaWalrus9 on Aug 6, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough
Volquez is my only weak spot in my starters since the break
He still strikes out a ton but has given up lots of runs in few innings
by explosivo2k2 on Aug 6, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he had some nerves in the first
gave up a few hits and a HR. In the 5 innings since, 0 hits, 1 walk, 3 Ks. Got a big breaking curveball.

FWIW
“Curtis Granderson isn’t in the lineup because he’s 0-for-9 against lefty John Danks and because “if you can’t use a guy after a four-hit game (Ryan Raburn), when can you?” said Leyland.” – from the Gage article mentioned by Ian.

Here's the lineup I want to see.
CF – Granderson
2B – Polanco
DH – Cabrera
LF – Joyce
RF – Ordonez
3B – Guillen
1B – Hessman
C – Inge
SS – Santiago

by Ian Casselberry on Aug 6, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you get why I put the lineup like that...
since we have no legit “slugger”...
I think Joyce could flourish as the LH hitter sandwiched between Cabs and Maggs considering neither of those guys are true cleanup hitters

This news will seem even more comical, considering the score
But according to Tom Gage, Farnsworth is apparently the closer tonight, if it were to come to that.

Get rid of Leyland. We go from almost best, good, bad. If we don’t get out of third place in this division or, God forbid, drop even further, surely they’ll ask him to leave.

Totally agree with what MSU4LIF said at the top. When Leyland said he was going to sit guys that weren’t producing, somehow I don’t think he meant Curtis Granderson.
I just want to know why Edgar Renteria and Gary Sheffield still have spots in this lineup.
WHY?
by bradm on Aug 6, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why?
My only guess is that ownership is paying them a bunch of cash and doesn’t want those millions sitting behind Ramon Santiago and Matt Joyce.
by Rogo on Aug 6, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another possibility
Their trade value won’t increase if they’re sitting. Sure, it could decrease by further bad play. But they’re not going to draw any interest in those guys by keeping them on the bench.
