Game 162: Tigers (74-87) at White Sox (87-74)
Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox, Sep 29, 2008 2:05 PM EDT
Freddy Garcia (1-1, 4.50) vs.
Gavin Floyd (16-8, 3.91)
Hey, bonus baseball! Well, not really, since this game was supposed to be played, anyway. But how many of you were kind of hoping that the Detroit Tigers' season would just end when it was scheduled to? Instead, the misery is prolonged just a bit for the greater benefit of baseball, as this 162nd game is needed to determine the winner of the AL Central.
If the Tigers were ever interested in playing spoiler (though their record during September would indicate they were not), today's make-up game with the White Sox provides an excellent opportunity to send Ozzie Guillen and crew home for the winter. However, I don't think that's going to happen.
Our prediction: The Tigers are going to get bombed today. That team ended their season yesterday at Comerica Park in front of the home fans and was ready to go home. Instead, they have to fly to Chicago and play one last game. You know how you're all mentally checked out the Friday before you leave for a two-week vacation? Yeah, it's something like that.
(Gary Sheffield might still like to hit his 500th home run, though. And with four RBIs, Miguel Cabrera could win the AL RBI crown. The White Sox, by the way, seem to think the Tigers will be fueled by crankiness.)
Meanwhile, the White Sox have to win this game to force a one-game playoff tomorrow with the Twins. Of course, that also puts a lot of pressure on the home team this afternoon. And Freddy Garcia might enjoy costing his former teammates a playoff bid to earn some bragging rights this offseason in Venezuela.
Sorry, Twins fans. We know you're rooting for Detroit today. Maybe the Tigers will want to make sure they don't finish in last place all by themselves.
South Side Sox has your SB Nation opposing view for the one game being played in Major League Baseball today. Hello, everybody!

I totally forgot about this
Our friends at Big League Stew remind us that Garcia and Floyd were traded for each other after the 2006 season. I must indeed be short on memory.

And we're... delayed?
The elements just do not want these teams to play, man. Word is they’re looking at about a 3:30 pm EST start now.

I am very unhappy
That this rain delay has forced me to watch Skip Bayless whine about Terrell Owens on ‘1st and 10.’

Is there a more loathesome person on Earth...
Than Skip Bayless? How can one appear to hate sports and still get a job at ESPN?
5:10 p.m. EST first pitch
According to Jason Beck.

You have to be kidding me. Game 162 and I can’t watch this. The home plate ump is absolute bullshit. (Pardon the language, but come on, this is ridiculous). 3/4 of those balls Freddy threw could have easily gone the other way. Call it both ways, Blue. Does the MLB need the drama of a playoff game this bad? It’s more revenue I guess….
Eat 'em up!
How often have I said this?
Score some #@$%ing runs! Garcia’s getting squeezed and still holding the White Sox down.

Almost a home run for Inge
But it drives Raburn in! Tie ballgame.

Okay, on second view/different angle… maybe not that close to a homer.

I don't know what's more fun
Watching the Tigers game, or watching the Twins board go crazy during the game.
Wow
Cant believe its a tight game so far, White Sox’s have to be shitting their pants..can you imagine hacing a home game against a team like the Tigers define your season…man this would be great…
That looked like the Tigers' fielding in the '06 World Series
Floyd’s throw was closer to Jermaine Dye than Konerko.

Did I see right?
Armando is coming into the game in relief?
Tigers blowing another one
Tigers season is over, but you think they would want to play spoiler. Here goes the bullpen blowing another game. I would be pissed off if I had to play this game instead of going home to be with my family. Why not ruin the White Sox season.
Are you kidding me??????
The tigers need to get rid of more than Herandez and Jones. Get rid of the entire bullpen.
To any Twins fans checking in
This is what we’ve been dealing with all season.

Good things Chicago's announcers don't work for Detroit
They got a little upset with that overthrown ball. That is a minor mistake to the Tigers. LOL
I wish I would have known
I hate the annoucers on ESPN. Orel and Steve Phillips are bad. Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are bad also. The Monday Night Football crew suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to turn the channel
so you guys let me know wlhen the Tigers win!! LOL
I have to admit
I’m kind of ticked the rain delay pushed the Tigers game into ‘Chuck.’ I mean, I’m recording it and all, but still…

By the way...
I’m thinking of turning this into a ‘Chuck’ blog during the offseason.

And...He An Arrogant Ass....
Harrelson is one of the least popular people in baseball circles and his no-class act was perfectly exemplified with that.
Too bad, as the Sox’ radio personnel (Farmer and Stone) are top of the line.
Go Twins….if only to ruin Harrelson’s day.
