Tigers sign Rincon
I've just received word the Tigers have signed reliever Juan Rincon to a minor league deal and have invited him to camp. Rincon spent last season with the Twins and Indians.
His ERA was something like 5.98, so he should be a perfect fit for the Tigers bullpen! No, I don't think he would be the answer as far as a closer is concerned. Hopefully, Brandon Lyon is still being considered for that job.
EDIT (by Ian): Last season, Rincon posted a 5.86 ERA in 55.3 innings, with 39 strikeouts and 24 walks. Right-handers hit .279/.340/.419 against him, while lefties batted .323/.414/.510.
His best season was probably 2004, during which he struck out 106 batters in 82 innings, finishing with an 11-6 record and 2.63 ERA.

It's weird...
It looks like he was pretty effective until 2007, when he became kinda terrible. And he got terrible right down the line, every peripheral. This has to be injury. If it’s a cheap minor league deal, though, I like it. Low risk, and a chance you get someone who’s rebounding.
Or
It also might have something to do with his success coming prior to being suspended for performance-enhancing drugs in 2005.

Hypogonadism
…is one kind of injury, I suppose. Though he was pretty good in 06, too.

must be hot off the presses news….funny thing, my company put the Obama inauguration on the big screen in our auditorium for employees to watch, but they had the fox news site streaming at first, but it crapped out, and eventually they switched to the feed from MLB.com
So, along with the inauguration of Barack Obama, I got my Mike Napoli and Tadahito Iguchi news on the bottomo of the screen crawl. Didn’t see anything about Rincon, though, that would have been awesome…
Lyon
Isn’t he supposedly supposed to announce this week which team he will sign with? I know the Twins made him an offer and other teams besides the Tigers were also interested. Sounds like he’s picking and choosing probably based on who gives him more
$$$$$$.
Lynn Henning reported the Tigers are meeting with Lyon this week, which I meant to post until I got swept up in Inauguration Fever.
So yes, we should find out soon. Very soon.
