MLB Playoffs Open Thread
Only one playoff game today, as the American League takes the day off, and the second part of today's NLDS doubleheader is postponed. Due to cold weather and snow, Game 3 of the Phillies-Rockies series at Coors Field has been pushed back to tomorrow night at 10:07 ET.
So that leaves the Dodgers and Cardinals as the only baseball of the day. Vicente Padilla and Joel Pineiro are the starting pitchers for L.A. and St. Louis, respectively.
On the schedule tonight, all times ET:
Game 3 Dodgers-Cardinals @ 6:07 p.m.
Game 3 Phillies-Rockies Postponed

Plus the Wings play later on, too. The number of open windows on my computer is going to severly tax my mental capacity.
I just hope I can remember to post cheers and frustrations on the correct threads, or it may get very confusing for everyone else as well as me.

Given the choice between baseball and studying for Kinetics
I’ll take baseball

The playoffs are your excuse for a failing Kinetics grade, aren't they?
I can’t imagine if the Tigers made it in, you’d be an academic disaster.
Just like me :P

Hey, my first round of exams all ended well, and most of them came during the season
I got a 99, two 98s, a 96, and a 90. That last one was Kinetics, and I pretty much got by on pure guile because it’s the one class where I have no idea what the hell they’re talking about.

I'm seriously hoping for a Tuesday lab section next semester instead of Thursday
My registration window opens sometime next week, and there are 29 spots left in the two Tuesday sections. Fingers crossed.

I can register next oct. 26 for the winter semester...
Until the financial aid dept. gets their rear in gear I may have to only take one class next semester. My Associates is gonna take forever to get to at this rate.
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
My problem is...
I already have a Bachelor’s degree, so I am categorized as “Undergraduate with Degree” and the credit hours used toward my BA are not counted when it comes to registration windows (though transfer credit that was not applied toward a degree DOES count). The problem is that most of the people in my PharmD class (108 people) have more credit hours at UT than I do and therefore their registration window opens before mine does. At least next year we become graduate students, which means we’ll all register at the same time.

Mich. State is the only place I've ever heard of that schedules both regular semesters at once
Also the only place that calls the semester that starts in January and runs through May 1st “spring”.

Meh, I don't really dislike the Cardinals
I just like the Dodgers more. If the Cardinals were playing the Phillies, I’d root for them. Not sure who I’d root for if it was Cardinals-Rockies.

at a UM bar....
To watch the UM game. Tough for a Spartan. No baseball on. All tvs tuned to wheel of fortune, since that is the channel game is on next. It is funny to watch drunk people scream at wheel of fortune.

That sounds hilarious. :)

Wow
Smoltz made his ML debut in 1988. That was a long effing time ago. His baseball career is old enough to drink legally.
I'm starting the evening with the Wings
Watching the Predators at 8 — I want to see their forward, Mike Santorelli, who I covered during his college hockey years. And maybe I’ll take in the sharks.
I’ll get back to baseball around the NLCS (Go Dodgers).
I'm only half paying attention to the baseball game
I’m reading No Country For Old Men which is pretty good so far, though it is pretty much following exactly with the movie.
Just got off the phone with my Personal Baseball Guru (the Yankees fan)
Here’s his assessments:
-He’s amazed the Cardinals are on the brink of elimination because he predicted them to win the World Series
He doesn’t think Greinke deserves the Cy Young cuz he only won 15 games (a lot of those against sub.500 teams) and he didn’t pitch that many innings (Not sure if this is true; I’m just repeating). He’s advocating either Justin Verlander or Felix Hernandez.
-He loves watching Verlander pitch.
-He thinks Joe Mauer’s batting average was about 20 points higher than it would be if his home park was NOT the Metrodome.
That statement about Greinke was NOT supposed to be crossed out
I don’t know how that happened.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 10, 2009 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
No offense
but if Greinke doesn’t win the Cy, it will be a travesty. Felix has a good case, but Greinke had one of the best season’s by anyone in the past decade.
You might need to interview for a new guru.
Mauer did great at home this season. Maybe that newfound power stroke of his plays to their right field of theirs. But in the past he’s actually had several road splits better than his home splits. And regardless, the guy is nothing short of an incredible batter.
Greinke would have won 20 on the Yankees. Hard to win when you lose 1-0 games.
by Kurt Mensching on Oct 10, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh, he's not saying Mauer's not a good hitter
Right after saying that he marveled at Mauer’s ability to pull a 99-MPH fastball that Verlander threw him. I think it was more meant as a complaint about turf.
Personally, Joe Mauer puts me to sleep. I don’t know why. I just find him to be completely uninteresting.

As a person he is store-brand vanilla ice cream.
It’s just as a player that he is tremendous.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
all true baseball fans love watching Verlander pitch
The single exception is if he is the opponent. I would despise him then.
And even with the Metrodome enhancement, Mauer is still an incredible hitter – especially for a catcher. Interesting to see what happens when they move outdoors.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
My favorite pitchers to watch:
Verlander, Felix, Lincecum, Kershaw, Feliz, Carlos Silva. No, wait – not that last one.
I like watching the Tigers score lots of runs AGAINST Carlos Silva
Does that count?
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 10, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Unless Washburn is pitching against Greinke.
Seriously. He went eight innings, three hits, no runs this year when Zack only went seven with three hits and no runs.

Apparently, players nowadays are better athletes but they have no baseball instincts (This statement was in reference to Granderson and Gardner getting doubled off).

they are pretty happy with how the game is going
But reining themselves in because they know all too well how quickly a game can turn on a single play. They are trying not to let themselves forget there are still a few innings to go before the end.

Hey everyone!
Here is the question I’ve been wondering about since the 2nd Dodgers/Cards game:
Does Raburn call Holliday after the game and organize a support group?
maybe not
At least Raburn had the roof to contend with. Holliday just had sky.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
and RR's play was at least a decision (to go or not go for it)
Holliday’s was as routine as routine should be.

but I am looking forward to the Twins being eliminated on Sunday. Then the healing can begin.

I've hated the Twins fiercely since 1987.
Twins-Yankees is a series I cannot watch and I desperately want the winner to be crushed in the ALCS.

I'm with you
I have no beef with the Yankees. At the very least, it seems like my favorite Tigers keep getting traded to them (First Cecil, then Pudge).
And, judging by the thread during the last game between the Twins and Yanks, a lot of people around here are rooting for the Twins to get eliminated.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 11, 2009 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions
I want the Twins crushed.
Then I don’t care what happens to the Yankees. I just want the evil empire to do me a little favor.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
there should be some sort of way for both teams to be eliminated from the playoffs when both teams are the spawn of Satans ass after a diarrhea inducing buffet.
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
I waffled a bit at first on who I wanted out more.
But watching the games I took more joy in Twins failures than in Yankees failures.
I think I might feel differently if the White Sox eliminated the Tigers and the Twins had little to do with it directly, but that wasn’t the case.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I don't think you're in the minority
unless the minority is just really vocal. I havent’ heard a lot of Twins love since the well wishes on Tuesday.
