MLB Playoffs Open Thread

The playoff schedule's a bit strange today, with a noon start in the east, followed by a long break before this evening's two games.

Will today be the last stand for the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins?  The St. Louis Cardinals' season ended yesterday in an improbable three-game sweep.

On the schedule tonight, all times ET:

Game 3 Angels-Red Sox @ 12:07 p.m.

Game 3 Yankees-Twins @ 7:07 p.m.

Game 3 Phillies-Rockies @ 10:07 p.m.

One thing I've forgotten to do in these playoff threads is link to the playoff teams' SB Nation sites.  (Apologies to Viva El Birdos.)  Most of you guys have found them on your own, but just in case you need some road signs:

Angels: Halos Heaven

Red Sox: Over the Monster

Yankees: Pinstripe Alley

Twins: Twinkie Town

Phillies: The Good Phight

Rockies: Purple Row

I totally forgot there was a noon game today!

Boston certainly doesn’t want to leave the postseason just yet.

Well, at least the Lions scored.

And they certainly won’t go 0-fer this year. And they are better than Oakland. So I guess those are positives.

Bye, bye Red Sox.

And totally off-topic – I FINALLY got my best pictures from Sleeping Bear Dunes uploaded. Woohoo!!! Nothing to do with baseball at all, but it took some time to sort through them and decide which ones I liked the best. I’m pretty excited about my family and friends being able to see them at their convenience and without fuss. :)

(No titles, yet, but I’ll get to it. I just started using photobucket this weekend really.)

Evening

Work was…busy. All I wanted was a flu shot and to order Chinese food and I got neither (I never even got a lunch break). Still, it’s nice to see that the much-loathed Red Sox have been knocked off. Herein ends my support of the Angels, unless the Twins somehow pull off a big comeback (I cringe, but hey, it already happened to ‘em). I know this view is not popular at all, but I like the Yankees better than the Angels, hence I will continue rooting for them in the ALCS (I think it’ll be just me and Kurt).

Well

Minnesota took the division from us in ‘06 and they were promptly destroyed by the A’s while we took down the overwhelming World Series favorite Yankees. Who knows what would of happened this year. I think we matched up a lot better to the Yankees than the Twins if you want my opinion. Honestly, they’ll never get deep in the playoffs with starters that pitch to contact and 4-5 ERAs. The Twins are built for the regular season, not the playoffs. They had a chance when they had Santana and even then they did squat. They’re a milquetoast franchise built for sustained mediocrity. At least the Tigers are interesting.

Apparently the ace of the Seattle pitching staff is now Felix RODRIGUEZ

That's the old format.

It just never changed for the old videos.

I watched that not too long ago

Perhaps when we get closer to spring training I’ll take a spin down the entire 2006 ALDS and ALCS memory lane (mlb.tv has its perks). That time was just downright cinematic.

What a special moment.

It’s nice to remember the moments of pure unadulterated joy of sports in with all the stuff about contract negotiations and labor disputes and officiating squabbles and all the other business stuff.

By the way, fun fact

While looking for pictures of Polanco in that hood, I noticed that when you type in “Polanco” into Google, “Placido Polanco head” is the third choice on the list of suggestions.

I like Todd Helton

Although I have no idea why. Maybe it’s that mop of hair.

Now does the "Jason" curse only pertains to pitchers?

What about position players named “Jason?” I have a story character named Jason Sanchez who is a position player.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 11, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so

Jason Varitek is a good player.

I just checked.

This year, there is no Jason in MLB with an ERA under 4.

Carlos Ruiz sure was irritating in the World Series last year

Especially if you were rooting for the Rays (which I was). He always seemed to get that pesky single that extended the inning. Ruiz probably should’ve won the Series MVP, not Hammels.

I'm off to bed

my visiting friend (who has manged to have fun despite being forced to watch some baseball) is leaving tomorrow so I’ll be back in full force for the rest of the playoffs, much to your guys’ delight/annoyance ;)

And if you were wondering...

I don’t think I know any more about Kinetics than I did BEFORE I started studying. I’ll have to double my efforts when it comes to studying tomorrow night (That’ll be for Pharmacology, though).

too bad

That osmosis doesn’t work – put a text under the pillow and the facts go right into the brain.

(Unless I was doing it wrong all the time and my pillow was getting smarter.)

Yikes

I remembered that Joe Blanton homered in the World Series last year. I did NOT remember that he hit the home run off Edwin Jackson.

And on that note, I’m off to bed. Kinetics exam first thing in the morning.

Sweep, sweep, sweep

3 of the 4 divisional series are ending with a sweep. Although there were some close games (as Game 2 in the Dodgers-Cards Series) I am a little bit disappointed about it.

Greetings from Germany. Dirk
