NLCS Game 1 Open Thread

After a two-day break, the baseball playoffs resume tonight with the National League Championship Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers.  This is a rematch of last year's NLCS, the first time that's happened since 2005.  (That actually doesn't sound like that big a deal.)

Last year, the Phillies won in five games.  This year, the Dodgers have home field.  Will that make a difference?

The Game 1 starting pitchers are Cole Hamels for Philly and Clayton Kershaw for L.A.

The Good Phight and TrueBlueLA are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

MLB was trying to build momentum

MLB took the Tigers route

Squandered. They could have had Tuesday and Wednesday to themselves, and due to the rigid TV contacts they decided to just blow it.

Hello

I am feeling quite accomplished. I’m done with exams until November, I was able to get a Tuesday lab section for next semester, and I FINALLY got part one of my season review done and posted.

Those sort of look like the cheddar biscuits at Red Lobster.

by StringTheory on Oct 15, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

they are more biscuit-y than most scones, actually

I wussed out and didn’t use the seeds in one of the jalapenos. kinda wish I had, they aren’t that spicy at all.

by allikazoo on Oct 15, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

my boss isn't going to be my boss much longer

He’s retiring at the end of November.

One of my coworkers (we have identical hire dates, oddly enough) interviewed and got the promotion to his position. He’ll do a great job, I think.

I don't think I could tolerate my job without my boss

I’d also probably be close to being fired, as he and I have a good, hilarious dynamic (meaning he lets me slack off too much). :)

by allikazoo on Oct 15, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

that's why I'm so glad that my coworker got hired

We get along very well, and have a good working relationship already. I’d rather that than try to figure out how best to deal with an entirely different boss.

Especially if he was a “looking over shoulder” kind of person. I like to be left alone to do my work – don’t badger me, don’t give me empty praise – just let me do my job and make sure the paychecks don’t bounce, and I’m fine.

Helloooo

I’m trying to get some homework done with the game on because fall break starts tomorrow and I’m going to Toronto with a couple of friends, so I’m guaranteed not to get any work done over the long weekend.

by kendra.michelle on Oct 15, 2009 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

I'm really excited

one of the friends who’s accompanying me LOVES Canada. No one is really sure why, because she’s never actually been there, but she does, so she’s really pumped to actually go there.

(I was sixteen). It’s a really nice city. All the people we met were really friendly.

By the way, this probably won't come into play at Dodger Stadium (or at the Big A, for that matter)...

But if it happens to be cold in either Philadelphia or New York, you guys will be happy to know that the Polanco hood is still an option for players:

I actually find him to be rather attractive. The hood definitely does him a disservice. I don’t even remember him wearing it in that game. He certainly wasn’t wearing it while he was batting. And you can’t see it that well with this image size, but I swear he’s wearing it inside-out.

oh he does have a future, for sure

he was oakland’s #1 prospect before being traded for matt holliday, arizona’s top prospect before going to oakland for danny haren. he’s been a star at every minor league stop, basically.

He got on base at a fairly decent clip, had consistent power in the minors.

I knew nothing about him prior to the NLDS and I decided I liked him very early on. I’m glad there’s substance to it. I was 12 when that movie came out. I haven’t watched it since sometime in high school, though. When I was 13 I saw a movie called “Tiger Town” that must’ve come out sometime in the ‘80s. It’s basically the exact same plot as “Angels in the Outfield” except it’s the Tigers and instead of angels, the kid just wishes really, really hard. Roy Scheider was in it and apparently Sparky Anderson and Ernie Harwell played themselves (I did not know who either of them were when I was 13, though).
