Sports blogs for fans, by fans.
Around SBN: Sean Keeley's Week 12 College Football Buffet

The Offseason Twitch Outpost.

Another offseason is upon us and while the playoffs rage on my ire for the Vile Cities Twins has not subsided.  I am able to watch a few playoff games despite the heartbreak of game 163. However, soon the playoffs will be over and then the countdown towards Spring Training begins (with the additional fun endeavor of trying not to vomit whilst the bobble headed parrots at ESPN and major sports outlets jockey for positioning to give Brett Favre his complimentry manual stimulation).

So what is there to do? Answer: talk about other things. Personally, I am looking forward to Dragon Age: Origins, starting a new Out of the Park Baseball 10 season (considering trying my hat replaying the 2003 Tiger season), figuring out a few things and eagerly awaiting the Venture Brothers season 4.

Let's not make Ian all crazy from off topic postings in threads and, um, discuss things. Oh, yeah, my name is David - that is easier to be addressed by than a string of numbers (no matter what their actual meaning).

Post Script: I still hate Nick Punto.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff. However, it does reflect the views of this particular fan, which is as important as anything else written here at BYB.

First of all, thank you

The SBN platform allows people a unique opportunity to start their own threads and post their own articles in FanPosts and FanShots, something that most other blogs don’t allow. Which is why I’ve gotten increasingly cranky when non-open threads are hijacked with off-topic conversations.

Maybe I haven’t done a good enough job in selling these features, but you guys are beginning to use them, which is fantastic.

We’re building a good community here, and it’s great that people want to stop here and have a conversation with those who have become friends. But BYB is still a baseball blog, and those who comment represent a minority of the overall readership. So people who want to read about Tigers-related and baseball topics shouldn’t have to scroll through the other stuff.

Okay, I’m in danger of hijacking this thread, so I’ll cut myself off there.

As far as what else to talk about, I’m going to be very disappointed with myself if I don’t scrape at least 30 DVDs off my Netflix queue this winter.

by Ian Casselberry on Oct 16, 2009 10:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was under the impression that the FanPosts had to be Tigers-related

If that’s not the case, would it be possible for me to host some Olympics open thread FanPosts once the games begin in February? I am a total Olympics junkie (both summer and winter), and it’s pretty much the only sports I watch on a consistent basis besides baseball. If I can’t, that’s cool. I just thought I’d ask.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 16, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ideally, maybe they would all be Tigers-related (or community-related)

But there’s only so much going on, and given the community’s appetite for other topics, I think it’d be better to keep the FanPosts section fresh with different threads.

The Olympics idea sounds fun. Give it a shot.

TV shows!

It’s fall, and a slew of my favorite shows are on (and in some cases, have been on and piling up). I’m also in my sixth (and last, thank god) year of school so my focus should probably be there.

Instead, I’m writing a series of season reviews of Tigers players. I just can’t let go. I’m hoping those profiles will last me until about mid- to late-January.

There’s also the issue of the DETROIT RED WINGS. I’m a rabid hockey fan, maybe not as much as I am for the Tigers, but the season is just now gearing up. I’ll probably start watching more Wings games within a month or so after the WS is over.

Books! Lots of books!

And, so far I’ve watched the Sharks every game on the NHL Center Ice. When the free trial ends at the end of October, I’ll … watch something else I guess. More basketball probably.

I’m glad Community is funny and 30 rock is back. Other than that I don’t watch a lot of non-sports TV.

Papers (ugh)

Decided to take 18 hours, which was a poor decision in hindsight. Other than that, I’ll probably be buying and beating Brutal Legend and maybe Arkham Asylum, and waiting with baited breath for Bioshock 2. That and watching the Canes (going to my first game 19 November!).

Gee, I hope folks take advantage of this thread

It would be quite lonely if they didn’t. Anyways, it’s my dad’s birthday today and my mom is making chicken paprikash, so I’ll be well-fed before watching Yankees-Angels tonight (I hope it’s not rained out).

Well I'm still here

Just not in the game threads- the only team I kinda like is the Dodgers, so they should lose this round.

Hey, three of the four teams I rooted for in the division series won

The only one that didn’t was the Rockies. I am still rooting for the Dodgers overall, but I think I’m the only one on this site rooting for the Yankees in the ALCS (sorry, guys).

Not the only one

I just don’t like teams with red logos- except for the Cardinals, Braves and D-Backs.

For me, it's a nostalgia thing

For a long time, the Yankees were actually my second-favorite team. I’ve been a Tigers fan my whole life, but they were never in the postseason when I was a kid (I was four in 1987). I had to root for somebody, I HATED the Braves (that has cooled down to fairly neutral these days), and I loved the city of New York. When you’re 12 years old, you don’t understand concepts like payroll.

You know what's making me twitchy?????

A laptop that died and can’t be fixed until after payday on Friday. However, I have noticed that I’m sleeping a lot better at night., so I should probably use this learning experience and trun the damn thing off at 9 PM. On the bright side, one of my local stations is showing back to back episodes of The Office every night at ten. And I’m getting a lot of crocheting done.

Since I don’t have cable I can only watch the ALCS, and last night’s game was a doozy. But I’m certainly not hanging on every pitch.

I miss our rally creatures.

My laptop keeps thinking it's unplugged when it is, in fact, plugged in

I’ve read that the most likely problem is the jack has come loose and needs to be soldered back into place, but I don’t know when I’ll find time to take it to get repaired (and I’m so attached to it that even several hours without it would be almost unbearable).

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have a laptop repair shop about three blocks from my house.

Years and years ago they did good work on my Mac, but since I went with Dell I’ve had the warranty. My problem is just like yours — adapter is not recognized and the jack needs to be replaced. Dell has “fixed” this about four times by replacing the motherboard, but I think my folks down the street will do better with an honest to God solder.

I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have access at work, but I’m not hyperventilating about being away from it at home. And the cats are verrrrrrry happy that I’m paying attention to them instead of that other thing that usually occupies my lap.

by NCDee on Oct 20, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I work for my uni's IT department

Can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen this happen. Jack comes loose, needs to be soldered back on. Warranty replacement usually results in the system board being replaced, which comes with (you guessed it) crappy solders.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 20, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I'm saying

Get it repaired by someone local, instead of the warranty repair which’ll just end up with the same problem down the line.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 20, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, there's a repair place that my dad trusts that I'll probably go to

(My dad’s a computer expert, but only desktop computers, not laptops). It’s just a matter of funds and whether I can emotionally separate myself from the laptop for that long. Still, I know the loose jack can arc and fry the insides of the computer, so I’d better get it done soon.

I lean towards self built desktop PCs.

Which is why I am not a Mac person.

Macs frustrate me because they seem to be more interested in trying to be cute than anything else

I like using Macs for art-type stuff and for video editing (I seriously miss being able to use Final Cut Pro like I did in college), but for everything else, I totally go for PCs.

Twitch...twitch...twitch...

Can I vent about something? UT really needs to clean out the pop machine in Wolfe Hall (the College of Pharmacy building). For three days in a row, I have gotten a bottle of iced tea from that machine (like I do pretty much every morning) and the bottle has been sticky and there’s globs of semisolid pop on the outside. My guess is that a bottle leaked somewhere, but I’m getting really tired of having to wash bottles off in the bathroom. Especially since there are no paper towels in the bathroom so I can’t dry the bottle afterwards…

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 22, 2009 12:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Unplug the machine

People will probably think the thing is broken, so they’ll call someone to fix it and possibly fix that problem too.

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

by demondeaconsbaseball on Oct 22, 2009 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I second the unplugging the machine.

And vent away; that’s what this thread is for.

by 13194013 on Oct 22, 2009 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would, but...

A. It’s in the middle of a row of vending machines that go the entire length of the wall.

B. It takes UT forever to fix stuff. There was a toilet in the women’s restroom that broke in early January, and they JUST fixed it two weeks ago.

I’ll find out tomorrow if the sticky pop is gone, though. If it isn’t, it might be time to switch to Mountain Dew for a while.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 22, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I highly doubt the that UT is in charge of the vending machines

I’d be pretty damn surprised if they run the vending machines. Our uni’s maintenance department is also slow as hell (took them 10 months to replace a damn bench, and it took homecoming for it to happen). The local distributor for Pepsi takes care of all our vending machines.

Well, it's finally happened

We have our first confirmed case of swine flu in the College of Pharmacy. They won’t release the name, but if it’s who we suspect, it’s someone in my class but I don’t associate with her very often.

But its still about as risky as getting the regular flu.

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

by demondeaconsbaseball on Oct 24, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

problem is the highly infectious nature

It’s one thing if a disease is DEADLY and will KILL MILLIONS OF PEOPLE (or just a few pretty horribly, because it isn’t transmitted before the person dies, like Ebola virus), but if it just makes people sick for a week and then they get better – but a workplace has a quarter of its employees out for that week – it’s just as much of a problem.

Regular run of the mill flu doesn’t usually hit everyone at once, so people can cover for each other – if about four people are sick in my workplace, we would be pretty much screwed. Contingency plans and planning ahead are for AFTER the emergency passes, apparently. :(

Heck, if I’m sick for a week they would be in trouble – especially in November.

^^This was actually what I was aiming for

At the time the prevailing thought was that they’d have to shut down the school because of a high number of sick students, This hasn’t happened yet (and the Tamiflu rush has calmed down at our pharmacy, though we get at least ten people a day asking if we’re going to offer the vaccine).

Geez, it’s been a long time since I’ve visited this thread.

I have a question for you Michiganders...

…and since there seems to be no open thread tonight, I’ll ask it here. One of my mom’s students is interested in an art school in Bloomfield Hills, but she would like to know if Bloomfield Hills is a nice area (i.e. wealthy or middle class suburb). Also, have any of you heard anything about the Cranbrook Academy (the art school she’s interested in)? I don’t expect any of you to know this last part, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask. At any rate, I’m doing this as a favor to my mom, so any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 13, 2009 9:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bloomfield Hills is rich

and Cranbrook-Kingswood is an absolutely gorgeous boarding school that costs more per year than most people spend on their cars. Very good school though.

by MackAveKurt on Nov 13, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To piggyback onto Kurt's comment

Yes, Bloomfield Hills is very affluent.

Is your mother’s student looking at the graduate art school? One of my best friends got her MFA in Photography from Cranbrook, and loved it there. Their graphic design and textiles programs are renowned.

The campus itself is beautiful. I attended a couple of writers workshops there, and enjoyed touring the grounds more than the actual conferences.
