Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

Attendance may have been down at Comerica Park this season, but that didn't mean people weren't watching the Tigers on TV.

Ratings for Tigers telecasts on FOX Sports Detroit were up by more than 10% this season. In terms of ratings points, FSD had the fourth highest increase among major league teams. The number of households tuning in for Tigers games also went up by almost 10%.

The cynic in me

Says this is because less people could afford to go to games.

A cynic is nothing but a frustrated idealist.

There is some truth to your statement, methinks.

at least they finally care about the results

and there’s enough of them all the games are on TV. Wasn’t that long ago that must have been 25-33% weren’t.

maybe...

…but last year (2008) was also HUGE in terms of ticket sales and was bitterly disappointing for many fans. I think the “attendance being down” is pretty relative, despite the easy (lazy) media correlation to the “economy” being bad, as this year’s attendance was still one of the best ever. Perhaps a larger reason is that many fans felt burned after purchasing season tix for a letdown season…it took awhile for folks to warm up to this team.

That's true too

Attendance was far from terrible. But we were a first-place team all year. And tickets were sold at deep, deep discounts all year long.

Also, Brandon Inge had a big year, or at least it was perceived as a big year. And as we all know, white people love Brandon Inge and generally will pay to see him play. And Verlander was pitching must-see games for a stretch there. So there is certainly room for disappointment in the attendance numbers, I would think.

I’d respond, but I’m not sure what you’re WTFing about.

"And as we all know, white people love Brandon Inge"

Really? Really didn’t know what I had an issue with there? Also, please try to reply in the same thread.

Weren’t ticket prices higher this year than last year?

That’d explain it pretty easily.

Once again proving my theory that white people love Brandon Inge

and some are sensitive about it. I don’t know what’s implausible about that theory.

I placed this response just for you.

You offend easily

I am mystified. Are you offended somehow? Just in disagreement? Do you spend your life in that pose in your profile picture, screaming at unintended threats to your wellbeing?

Once again, if I had any clue what you were so worked up about I would respond more specifically. At least this time you’ll be able to find the response. Not like before when it was right below yours, but your highly developed sense of internet etiquette was offended.

One of the things I like most about this site is its consistent collegiality, so I will try to wrap this up for you. It may indeed be troll-like (although I’m not sure what that means) to see if you’ll respond to my last missive rather than just try to explain what seems to have offended you.

The white people line was:

A) a joke, and

B) pretty accurate, as far as generalizations go.

First the joke part: It was in the vein of “Germans love David Hasselhoff” and the wildly successful website and book “Stuff White People Like” (camping, Mad Men, Volvo, etc., etc.). I am sorry you didn’t get the joke. I think it’s pretty harmless. I myself am very white, for what it’s worth.

The second part: Inge is a fan-favorite. You have acknowledged this. Baseball tends to have a pretty white demographic, especially in these parts. And Inge does some “great white hope” qualities: exceedingly athletic, exciting to watch, “clutch” (a dubious concept in general and as it applies to Inge).

So I think it’s fair to say that overall Inge probably appeals more to white fans of Tigers baseball than to Tigers fans of other ethnicity. I wouldn’t be shocked if management thinks about things like that to an extent, since white folks are buying most of the tickets. That doesn’t seem controversial or dangerous to say out loud to me. But again, it was a joke.

My overall point was that the Tigers had a lot of things going for them this year in terms of attendance-drivers. So while I agreed that “up or down” is relative to a lot of things, I’d say there’s some cause for concern with respect to attendance vs. TV viewership. Maybe it’s the economy, maybe it’s other stuff.

Sorry to have unintentionally led us off topic. It was a throwaway joke line.

So we can chalk this up to a misunderstanding then?

Maybe the third rail was touched a little bit?

Sensibilities offended just a tad?

Thanks for explaining yourself, cloud wall. Jokes and sarcasm don’t always translate well via text.
