ALCS Game 2 Open Thread

The Angels didn't make a good showing of themselves in Game 1 of the ALCS, losing 4-1.  Will they rebound to look more like the team expected to give the Yankees a challenge?  Or do the Yankees take a 2-0 series lead out to Anaheim?

The Game 2 starting pitchers are Joe Saunders for the Angels and A.J. Burnett for the Yankees.

Halos Heaven and Pinstripe Alley are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

Haven't had dinner yet

Pickings are slim around here, not sure what I’m going to chow on just yet. My girlfriend made a huge batch of chocolate and peanut butter chip cookies today, so that’ll be in my future.

Mostly German and Irish (with a little bit of Swiss, Native American, and British mixed in). Tony Packo’s is supposed to have good chicken paprikash, but my mom’s is MUCH better.

actually, ties are now banished

At the end of regulation, they play five minutes of sudden-death overtime. If there is no winner after that, they go to a stupid shootout.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 17, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Osgood fine in actual hockey games

And at some point they have to give someone like Howard a chance. It’s just that when a goalie makes a mistake, he doesn’t have a linemate to cover for him, so dealing with the growing pains of a rookie is really stressful.

What?

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

by David Tokarz on Oct 17, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

Goalies are strange, strange creatures. They remind me of closers in some ways.

One can suddenly come out of nowhere, set the league on fire, stop everything in sight and gain a reputation as a sure thing, winning a big contract – and a year or two later he can be total crap that can’t stop a beach ball or strike out a 90-year-old grandmother.

Odd thing to have such wild variation from one year to the next.

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero

by Baroque on Oct 17, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

they are a little bit

A good goalie can do some things to control the pace of the game, freezing the puck for a stoppage in play or moving it along if his team is doing well, and communication with the skaters is very important.

I think of closers because of the obvious nature of the mistakes of each. It doesn’t matter if a closer comes into a game with one out and the bases loaded, protecting a one-run lead – if he gives up a hit that scores a couple runs, it is HIS FAULT that the team lost because it is HIS JOB to get the save – whatever it takes. A goalie has to stop the puck no matter what, even if the team is playing crappy defense in front of him and he has no chance on the goals. It is still HIS FAULT that the goals were scored.

Of course rational fans accept that no one is perfect and sometimes something bad is going to happen, no matter how good a player is – but the reactionaries in both sports are quick to place blame in the most obvious place.

can't disagree, I've thought much the same

California seems to be able to support its teams. I’m always shocked at how many Californians like the sport. Though it’s probably just midwestern or northeasterners.

I think there could be a lot of success in non-traditional markets

But they would have needed to be added slowly instead of thrown all over wherever someone paid the expansion fee. Maybe a couple at a time, every three or four years, and wait until the new teams were somewhat established before putting in new ones.

And get rid of the salary cap and replace it with a luxury tax. I think it would be a lot more fair for all the teams no matter what the revenue.

because the NHL is run by moronic baboons

If they had any chance to make a go of it in that market before, the relocation talk has completely poisoned the town for it.

The problem (well, one, anyway) is their lease is a total disaster, they can’t possibly be profitable with those conditions, and the town isn’t going to modify it because what municipality is going to actually do anything to reduce its available funds in an economy like this?

What they need is someone who wants to have the team in Phoenix, has the finances to wait out the bad times and eat the losses for a few years before they become profitable, and doesn’t just want the team as the centerpiece of a real estate scam development. And I doubt that such a creature exists.

The Coyotes are just screwed.

for the Wolverine faithful

replay of today’s game on Big Ten Network at 12:30. Repetitive, but less commercials.

Why are you guys playing Delaware State at this point in the season?

Really confused by that. Not quite sure what that’s supposed to mean for your rankings, strength of schedule. You done with non-conference finally?

by john.kmiecik on Oct 18, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

UM had an open date, and needed/wanted to schedule a 12th game.

Yep.

I was listening to an interview with the Montana State coach earlier this year (Mich. State opened against them) and he flat out said “We’re here for the money. This is over half our athletic budget this year.”

by john.kmiecik on Oct 18, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I think so

the NCAA started requiring 12 games in a season a few years ago so they’ve been scheduling teams last-minute for the last few years (App State, Toledo, etc.). I don’t like seeing it either, but I’m not in charge.

http://gordiehowehattrick.wordpress.com/

by handsomerob1 on Oct 18, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, Big Ten anyway.

Big Ten is always going to be a garbage football conference until they implement a damn playoff and act like a real conference.

That’s for another thread though.

it's why I don't like the BCS

the win is more important than who you play.
