The Angels didn't make a good showing of themselves in Game 1 of the ALCS, losing 4-1.  Will they rebound to look more like the team expected to give the Yankees a challenge?  Or do the Yankees take a 2-0 series lead out to Anaheim?

The Game 2 starting pitchers are Joe Saunders for the Angels and A.J. Burnett for the Yankees.

Halos Heaven and Pinstripe Alley are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

Haven't had dinner yet

Pickings are slim around here, not sure what I’m going to chow on just yet. My girlfriend made a huge batch of chocolate and peanut butter chip cookies today, so that’ll be in my future.

Mostly German and Irish (with a little bit of Swiss, Native American, and British mixed in). Tony Packo’s is supposed to have good chicken paprikash, but my mom’s is MUCH better.

actually, ties are now banished

At the end of regulation, they play five minutes of sudden-death overtime. If there is no winner after that, they go to a stupid shootout.

It was one of the rules after the owners locked out the players and cost an entire season – the theory was that fans “deserved” a win or a loss.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 17, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Osgood fine in actual hockey games

And at some point they have to give someone like Howard a chance. It’s just that when a goalie makes a mistake, he doesn’t have a linemate to cover for him, so dealing with the growing pains of a rookie is really stressful.

by demondeaconsbaseball on Oct 17, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not really

Goalies are strange, strange creatures. They remind me of closers in some ways.

One can suddenly come out of nowhere, set the league on fire, stop everything in sight and gain a reputation as a sure thing, winning a big contract – and a year or two later he can be total crap that can’t stop a beach ball or strike out a 90-year-old grandmother.

Odd thing to have such wild variation from one year to the next.

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero

by Baroque on Oct 17, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

they are a little bit

A good goalie can do some things to control the pace of the game, freezing the puck for a stoppage in play or moving it along if his team is doing well, and communication with the skaters is very important.

I think of closers because of the obvious nature of the mistakes of each. It doesn’t matter if a closer comes into a game with one out and the bases loaded, protecting a one-run lead – if he gives up a hit that scores a couple runs, it is HIS FAULT that the team lost because it is HIS JOB to get the save – whatever it takes. A goalie has to stop the puck no matter what, even if the team is playing crappy defense in front of him and he has no chance on the goals. It is still HIS FAULT that the goals were scored.

Of course rational fans accept that no one is perfect and sometimes something bad is going to happen, no matter how good a player is – but the reactionaries in both sports are quick to place blame in the most obvious place.

I think there could be a lot of success in non-traditional markets

But they would have needed to be added slowly instead of thrown all over wherever someone paid the expansion fee. Maybe a couple at a time, every three or four years, and wait until the new teams were somewhat established before putting in new ones.

And get rid of the salary cap and replace it with a luxury tax. I think it would be a lot more fair for all the teams no matter what the revenue.

because the NHL is run by moronic baboons

If they had any chance to make a go of it in that market before, the relocation talk has completely poisoned the town for it.

The problem (well, one, anyway) is their lease is a total disaster, they can’t possibly be profitable with those conditions, and the town isn’t going to modify it because what municipality is going to actually do anything to reduce its available funds in an economy like this?

What they need is someone who wants to have the team in Phoenix, has the finances to wait out the bad times and eat the losses for a few years before they become profitable, and doesn’t just want the team as the centerpiece of a real estate scam development. And I doubt that such a creature exists.

The Coyotes are just screwed.

The idea of getting a big national television contract, I mean. It didn’t happen, it isn’t going to happen, and if the league had any brains at all, they would get heavily into making games available on the internet – and not for that insanely high charge for their package, either.

I don't want the Yankees to win.

I REALLY don’t want Guzman to be the winning run.

Difference between closers

Rivera is a guy you bring on with two runners on, and you need an out.

Fuentes is the closer you bring on at the beginning of an inning, with no runners on.

i do find it strange....

That no one has ever even opined about Riveras performance improving over the years and him never having a bad season.

Free baseball is free baseball

don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Also, did you ever notice that Teixeira looks kind of like a horse? So don’t look Mark Teixeira in the mouth.

I'm just rooting for a long series.

I want to see below-freezing baseball.

Man

Angels just can’t catch a break.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 17, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it's the only way we are staying awake

The game is so dull we need to amuse ourselves.

I'd like to think

that the whole “fisted” jag that they just went on was in response to the multitude of internet jokes about Chip Caray’s overuse of said word. You know, a subtle rip at the other network…

by ChrisDTX on Oct 17, 2009 11:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wish they were that clever and subtle

But I doubt it.

Not every game that goes to extra innings in the playoffs is a gem.

This one I’m finding rather dull. And also far too long.

Are you fucking kidding me?

I’ve seen that exact same thing happen 1,000,000,000 times and it is NEVER called. And now they do it in extra innings of a fucking playoff game? Give me a damn break.

I remember one game that the Tigers played against Oakland where it wasn't called

The call went in the Tigers favor, as both runners ended up being safe, but they still lost the game

Every middle infielder in the sport does that!

Seriously, the officiating this postseason has been dreadful.

and pickier than any other official has been the entire season

What bs.

Eh.

Not really. At least a tight strike zone will (most likely) be consistent.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 17, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but if an ump has a tight strike zone he always has a tight zone

This is doing the same thing that has been okay all season long, and then all of a sudden it isn’t okay anymore. At least if an ump is known to have a tight zone the pitchers and batters can adjust and probably know ahead of time. No surprises.

scosc should have come out of the dugout

With the gatorade cooler and thrown it. That is how ridiculous that was.

by rook34 on Oct 17, 2009 11:49 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but I think they lowered the volume

I can only hear it when things on tv quiet down. I’m pissed about that call though. such bs

by allikazoo on Oct 17, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

umps bailed out big time.

Still absolute horseshit. MLB has a major problem with the umpiring.

by rook34 on Oct 17, 2009 11:52 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Interesting.

I think the best umpires should work the postseason every year. If some guys always work the World Series and others are upset they are left out, tough – do a better job next year and then you’ll get your chance.

Thinking that at some point this game has to be over.

Oh, I ate too much

My mom made chicken paprikash for my dad’s birthday. I hope everyone else’s evening is going well.
