Game 160 Overflow Thread
Jake Peavy is once again getting it done against the Tigers. (Though they do seem to be hitting him better than last Friday in Chicago.)
And Edwin Jackson would be matching him, if not for an unfortunate fastball up in the zone to Scott Podsednik and Carlos Guillen misplaying a bloop single to left field.
White Sox 2, Tigers 0 as we go to the fifth inning.

That's weird
Usually an outfielder gets an error if he touches the ball before it hits the ground, that and he slid about a full 2 seconds too soon.

I hate using the term choke because it is way overused in inappropriate contexts
But if the Tigers can’t hang on you could argue they will have choked away the division – buckled under the pressure. They are so tight if they walked through a draft they would twang.

It really sucks to choke in a division full of
mediocre.
by wepri31 on Oct 2, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know
They are good enough to win this division if they would just relax and play competently. They don’t have to be outstanding, they don’t have to be fabulous – just decent is enough, and they can’t manage it.
I can handle losing to a better team, or even a healthier team – but I don’t like seeing a team lose because they were so nervous and tense that they couldn’t put forth their best effort.

Every other brand the underwires pinch – and I NEED the underwire for the support. Their cotton collection is fantastic and the only ones that fit well.
I was looking at some of their sweaters in the last catalog I got and wondering how nice they were. Maybe I’ll get one (if they have it in stock in the color I want). :)

by okie for michigan on Oct 2, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the way I heard the discussion ...
Is that MLB thinks they have precedence because it is a divisional game for Minnesota, which means that instead of having the home game then and the away game later they just flip-flop the home and away, which might normally be fine … but in this case Green Bay is coming to visit Brett Favre, and the NFL is disinclined to move the game from it’s Monday night slot.
If one of my teams wasn’t involved, I’d root for that to happen purely for the potential for dispute. :)

yes
Injuries. But other than that – I figured odds were they would lose to Peavy, but I’d feel less crappy if the score was something like 3-1. Still, however big hte score, it’s only one loss.

I mostly expected the Tigers to lose and the Twins to win.
But not like this. Ugh.
by StringTheory on Oct 2, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yup
The extreme lopsidedness makes it seem like a “bigger” loss than it is – same for the Twins game.

Well, good thing runs scored don't count on the standings
This isn’t the BCS

Could the Royals at least TRY to screw with Minnesota?
We got the White Sox trying to screw with us. Why can’t the Royals play like proper spoilers?

900+ comments on the game threads.
And 90% of them can’t pass the Front Page Filter for COTN.

hee hee
That actually cracks me up. A game this bad, that was over this early, and we still stuck around.
We are either dedicated or need professional help and an intervention!

Postgame shame zucchini bread. Yum.
Random thought. Did separating Verlander and Jackson in the rotation have any effect?
by StringTheory on Oct 2, 2009 9:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Didn't JL try that earlier in the year?
I can’t remember what happened and I’m too lazy to look it up.

anyone else wondering....
How edwins slide has affected whether or not we sign him long term? He has not bee good for six weeks.
by rook34 on Oct 2, 2009 9:52 PM EDT via mobile reply actions 0 recs
I can't see us cutting him loose, if that's what you mean
He still has a couple years of arbitration left. But maybe a one-or-two-year deal is more in order.

that is what i meant
No five year deal.
by rook34 on Oct 2, 2009 9:59 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
the tigers should not be paying him a multi year deal either way
and anyone who was ready to back up the bank in july was insane because he has multiple arbitration years yet.
I sense the Tigers will save a few bucks on what he’ll earn next year.

What about Verlander?

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 2, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
they definitely need to be exchanging numbers with verlander
but nothing more than a 5 year deal. even that many years is risky with a pitcher

They're interviewing Miggy like he's the pitching coach
And, Miggy, you’re hard enough to understand without the chew stuffed in your cheeks.

im sure leyland will be asked....
What he is going to say to the players. There is nothing to say. If they aren’t embarassed by the last two days, and don’t come out tomorrow with some damn pride, they are hopeless.

typically you check foxsports.com/mlb
but there’s nothing there about their schedule now
by MackAveKurt on Oct 2, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's what I thought
And I was confused when I couldn’t find the page that show you who gets which game (since I normally just kinda stumble across it anyways).

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 2, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I hadn't thought about that
It could be dicey. Since stupid MLB blackout rules preclude getting any Saturday afternoon games except for the FOX one.
