ALCS Game 4 Open Thread

Just in case you weren't sure if Jerry Hairston, Jr. could get to Jeff Mathis's game-winning double, he fell down and stayed on the ground to make sure everyone knew he was out of the play.

Just in case you weren't sure if Jerry Hairston, Jr. could get to Jeff Mathis's game-winning double, he fell down and stayed on the ground to make sure everyone knew he was out of the play.

Last night, the Phillies took a 3-1 series lead over the Dodgers in the NLCS.  Can the Yankees gain a similar advantage in the ALCS with a victory tonight, or will the Angels follow up yesterday's exciting 11th-inning win and tie this series up?

(By the way, has anyone checked on Jerry Hairston, Jr. after he made a big production out of running into the left field wall and falling down while chasing Jeff Mathis's game-winning double?  He might still be laying on the warning track out there.)

The Game 4 starting pitchers are CC Sabathia for the Yankees and Scott Kazmir for the Angels.

Pinstripe Alley and Halos Heaven are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

hope your day has been going better than mine

Although actually it was fine until I found out I have to spend $800 to have something fixed.

//sigh

Okay, Angels -

Make me feel better after a crappy day by kicking the Yankees’ collective ass, please. I would appreciate it very much.

Actually, CC's not that bad of a hitter

I believe he hit two home runs last year (one with the Indians in Interleague, then one later with the Brewers).

More good Sizemore news

I don’t have time to stay long (paper), but I though I’d throw this out.

Kevin Goldstein on Scott Sizemore: “The guy can just flat out rake, as evidenced in part by his 17 total bases in his last three games, with one scout saying he could approach .300 in the big leagues right now.”

Not as much

As he’d help us combined with the two draft picks we get when Polanco leaves plus the money we save.

Hell, I’d take him and the cash.

Meh, you could trade Sizemore (sell when the stock is high, after all), let Polanco leave and collect draft picks

Will Rhymes is a second baseman, no? Plus, he’s a left-handed batter, and Tigers fans have been clamoring for more lefties. Sizemore’s a righty.

That way, you’d get draft picks, even more money saved, and some fresh blood in the organization. Although…if you package Sizemore with Perry and Guillen/Bonderman…

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know that Sizemore's stock is all that high

Plus, don’t think I’d be ready for Rhymes to play big time anyway.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 20, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I certainly didn't find him that exciting when I saw him with the Mud Hens

And the information that you guys have told me have kind of painted a picture of Dan Uggla with less power and a slightly higher average.

And Will Rhymes was just a name. I’d actually prefer someone with some D.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sizemore’s stock is probably higher in the Tigers’ organization than throughout the rest of baseball, as a younger, cheaper player who can replace an older veteran.

And Will Rhymes seemed highly regarded last winter, but he needs to prove he can hit Triple-A pitching first.

by Ian Casselberry on Oct 20, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your assessment of Sizemore is actually what my initial gut feeling was...

…but everyone around here has been talking him up so highly that I was starting to doubt myself. Note to self: Trust instincts more.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that's just a part of baseball

Eventually, you have to take a chance on some guys, like the Tigers did with Porcello this year. Or Galarraga last year.

Granted, you’re talking about Sizemore replacing someone who’s been very, very dependable. But with the team’s payroll as it is, they have to take a chance somewhere.

Evening

I may be rooting for the Yankees (for strategic purposes), but I still want this series to go seven games because I want as much baseball as possible before it’s all gone (which means I also want the World Series to go the full seven). By the way, I turned on Gameday (not the TV) as soon as I got home, and the Yankees had the bases loaded with Johnny Damon at the plate and Gameday said “In play, run(s).” After a LONG delay, the more descriptive play popped up: “Johnny Damon flies into double play. Nick Swisher doubled off third.” How does THAT score a run? Someone care to explain?

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm still confused, but okay

I just turned the TV on, but based on the box score I looked at, Buck and McCarver’s mancrush on Sabathia must be through the roof.

The Jeter stuff is completely out of hand.

I can’t listen anymore. They make it sound like a 6-3 groundout sound like a climbing of Mount Everest while blindfolded.

Sorry, I said sound like twice in 8 words.

I’ll take redundancy for $800, Alex.

by rook34 on Oct 20, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I kind of feel sorry for Jeter

I like Jeter well enough. He is a good player. But he is so overexposed that it causes most people to hate him simply because of all the media coverage.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, not his fault.

But I still get nauseous whenever I see him. It’s just so out of hand.

by rook34 on Oct 20, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jeter is like the anti-Rodriguez

Good player, good guy on and off the field, he’s a class act. He’s everything Rodriguez isn’t.

by john.kmiecik on Oct 20, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, for God's sake.

We’re never going to hear the end of A-Rod now.

He’s having the second best playoff (Howard has been even better). But the press is going to just bludgeon us with A-Rod.

Which is fine, as long as they stop with the Jeter For Sainthood nonsense.

by rook34 on Oct 20, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Personally, I'm tired of hearing about Ryan Howard, but maybe that's cuz I'm rooting for the Dodgers

Also, I wonder…what if the Tigers were in the position the Yankees are in now, and instead of A-Rod, it was Cabrera with all those home runs. After what happened the last week of the season, how would the media try to portray him?

What’s going on? Someone lose the DH again?

by john.kmiecik on Oct 20, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Weird play

Yankees had runners on second (Cano) and third (Posada). Nick Swisher hit a ground ball back to the pitcher. They threw to the plate, got Posada in a rundown, Posada ran back to third at the same time Cano arrived at third. Napoli tagged both Posada and Cano. The ump initially ruled that both of them were out, then changed his mind and decided that only Posada was out.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, would they drop it about Brian Fuentes and A-Rod in Game 2?

It was a one-run game. A-Rod was leading off the inning. Fuentes was NOT gonna walk him. That’s just not a smart move in a one-run game. I don’t care how big a power hitter A-Rod is. It was just a horrible pitch sequence to him.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 10:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey all

What’s up with Posada’s nail job? Didn’t realize what he was up to but now it seems to be b/c CC can’t see his fingers.

I'm glad Swisher is out of the game

I kept confusing him with Damon whenever he was batting.

OK forget about the score for a minute, that play Aybar made was one of the most amazing plays I have ever seen…

by PBURGTIGER on Oct 20, 2009 11:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fun fact:

Struggling closers has been a big theme of this postseason, along with crappy umpiring. The postseason has featured six blown saves from six different closers (Ryan Franklin, Joe Nathan, Jonathan Papelbon, Houston Street, Brian Fuentes, and Jonathan Broxton). The only remaining closers who have not blown a save are Mariano Rivera and Brad Lidge.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 20, 2009 11:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so, that sucked

I could see the game fine from where I was in the bar, but every time I spent more than two seconds watching my friend gave me a dirty look and would purposely talk loudly about something else. and she wonders why I stay in my apartment or at my parents’ with my dad to watch baseball.

6 AM wakeup time, and it looks like Tim Horton’s/Sonic/Arby’s for breakfast again because I keep forgetting to buy food. My pharmacy’s in a damn grocery store, for crying out loud.
