would Lynn Henning quit trying to trade Granderson?
Yet again Lynn Henning has suggested the Tigers "need" to move Granderson to have ANY chance of winning the division next year: "How the Tigers can stay in contention"
• They will trade Curtis Granderson for two players. I cannot shake a personal belief that dealing Granderson is their only way out of heading into 2010 with zero chance to win the division. This is said with the understanding that losing your center fielder and leadoff man is not an ideal way to get better.
Yeah, probably not the best plan...did Grandy snub him for an interview or something?

Henning is a moron.
You’ll find few folks here that actually listen to what he says.

I usually appreciate his writing, right or wrong he throws ideas and observations out there—but take away an above average defensive outfielder, younger player, someone who looks like maybe a real nice #3 or #5 hitter in the years to come, and “all-around good guy” to boot?!
Seriously, I think Curtis must’ve kicked his dog or something.

Anyone can throw out ideas and observations.
Henning needs to bring reasoning and evidence to the table instead of pulling things out of his colon.

Who's going to do it?
I’ve thought about this since he last brought this up, and quite frankly, I don’t see who’s going to do this deal that he thinks will be so great. There are a great many teams with young, up and coming CFs, or with established, solid veterans. Last time he talked about getting two players, a reliever, a second baseman or a replacement CF. But I can’t thin of a single team that would supply two of those things. Now, he says they need a SS. Never mind that he’s proclaimed Raburn will be great in left, but that the Tigers would be getting a corner outfielder for Granderson. For G-d’s sake, make up your mind.

Apparently Magglio got released
And Casper Wells will supposedly be playing CF.

What's up, Tigers fans?
We’re discussing the concept/likelihood of a Granderson-to-the-Cubs trade in a Fanpost over at Bleed Cubbie Blue. (Here’s the link.) I think the discussion could greatly benefit from one or more contributors with some detailed knowledge of the Tigers’ roster. Please consider yourselves invited.

Snowballs chance in hell
You’d have to start with Granderson and either a) take virtually all our bad contracts with him (think-3 or possibly more of Willis, Guillen, Ordonez, Robertson, Bonderman) or b) offer us something damn good in return- and by damn good I mean young, cost controlled superstar potential talent (something the Cubs do not have).
I could see a deal with Milwaukee for Mat Gamel/JJ Hardy maybe working, but that’s even an iffy proposition- we just wouldn’t get enough. Granderson is a player who had an unlucky year and is ranked as the player with the 22nd most trade value in MLB. We’re not looking to dump him and we’ll only bite if we get something incredible for him.

Just to clarify, are you referring to a Bradley-for-Granderson trade specifically...
…or just a Granderson trade in general? As far as young, cost-controlled, superstar-potential talent goes, would Carlos Marmol come anywhere near that definition for you?
In any case, I do agree that a Granderson-to-the-Cubs deal is highly unlikely. As we’ve looked at ways to move Milton Bradley and get something (anything!) of value in return, the names of Ordonez, Willis and Bonderman have come up first.

Marmol isn't enough- no deal
And mind you- this isn’t meant to be an attack against you or BCB- it’s just that Granderson is a horrendously underrated CF who is great defensively, great with the stick and one of the best clubhouse guys around.
The way I see it, Granderson cannot be treated as a contract to unload. He’s a piece of talent that, if we do consider trading him, should fetch a ransom around what Danny Haren was worth. Remember- the Tigers need young, cost controlled talent. The only guys the Cubs have that really meet that definition are Marmol and Soto- we don’t need a catcher and we have bullpen talent rising through the farm quickly (we spent every one of our draft picks in 2008 on relievers, it seems).
Detroit will take Bradley (hell, I’ve been advocating it for a while)- but it’ll cost you Guillen, Ordonez or Willis. Given the attitude problems surrounding him in conjunction with salary and performance, it may cost you cash too.

Oh, no offense taken.
I’m actually a big Granderson fan myself (as you no doubt know, he’s a Chicago guy), and I recognize that his value is pretty high – despite his relatively down ’09.
As far as the three names you listed, I might take Maggs – I could see him bouncing back at Wrigley. But I’m still focusing mainly on centerfielders as I’d like to get Fukudome back to right field where his defensive value is much higher. Then again, Ordonez would bring the power one would like to see in a corner outfielder – uh, assuming he starts hitting home runs again.
Willis is another interesting idea. I could maybe see the Cubs trying to re-invent him as a set-up guy. Do Tigers fans see him as a sort of hopeless case because of his anxiety problems? I haven’t followed his story that closely.

why don't the Tigers
trade Verlander and Porcello while they’re at it too? Verlander isn’t a dominant starter and that Porcello guy isn’t ever going to be anything special…
Yeah, Henning’s an idiot.

haha
well played. I’d rather have Guillen than Bradley. At least Guillen picks appropriate times to complain (i.e. after the season)

Tigers should LISTEN on deals for Granderson
I love Curtis Granderson as the Tigers Center Fielder BUT… He is a valuble commodity and the Tigers should listen to offers this Winter. Many of us complained when DD shipped out the un touchable prospects a couple of years ago but I’d make that trade again tomorrow, I just wouldn’t sign Willis to a two year extension.
Granderson is bright, articulate, involved in the community and one of those players that MLB loves to market. His value is probably down a little after last season’s backslide against lefties but he should STILL command a great deal in a trade. IF the Tigers could get a legitimate closer as well as a second basemen or shortstop I’d make the deal.
Lynn Henning has ALWAYS been controversial because he is like us, a somewhat knowledgeable baseball fan who has access to the players and the behind the scenes guys. He often makes wild predictions that do not come true BUT he is often right as well.
Give the guy a little bit of a break, he is entertaining as hell and ALWAYS creates stuff we can talk about here for weeks!

Eh.
I just can’t take this route. Just because someone throws 100 ideas against the wall and 20 of them stick doesn’t mean I have to like the 80 other ones.

Maybe Lynn can combine forces with JPM...
And move Grandy straight up for Jack Wilson.
