This Week's Poll: How Long Should "Kid Rick" Stick?
As much as I'd prefer not to have poll questions centered on Rick Porcello for two straight weeks, we're a little dry on topics at the moment. So even though this might be a question better suited for later in the offseason or sometime around Spring Training, we'll go with it now.
I don't know who was the first to coin the "Kid Rick" nickname in our GameThreads. Maybe the person who used it here saw it someplace else first. (You know who you are. Raise your hand.) But it stuck. Even the guys at Big League Stew dug the nickname when I threw it out there during the AL Central tiebreaker. And rightfully so, because it's kind of brilliant, playing not just on Porcello's rookie status, but on a pop culture figure with Detroit ties.
But the nickname can't last forever. Kid Rick grew up before our eyes this season (sporting a pretty impressive pennant race beard), but eventually he will develop into adulthood. (And the "Tiger Beat" contingent of the BYB community can voice their feelings for him without looking kind of lewd while doing it.) And when he reaches that point, will the nickname no longer stick?
So that's the subject of this week's poll question:
When should the "Kid Rick" nickname for Rick Porcello be retired?
You can find the poll on the right sidebar below the FanPosts block. Or you can vote here. Please add your thoughts in the comments. And if you have suggestions for future poll questions, shoot me an e-mail.
How did our last poll go?
Maybe not the most objective crowd on this one. But Porcello's late-season run may have turned some heads.
Where do you expect Rick Porcello to finish in the AL Rookie of the Year voting?
54% First
28% Second
15% Third
1% Fourth
0% Fifth
Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll.

Has to be the drinking age
That’s the time when a person is given all the legal rights of an adult.

option five:
when someone younger plays regularly and takes his place as The Kid (with a different name, of course).
I like this
However I think he’ll always be Kid Rick to you, Alli :P

The average required age is 25
Unless that’s changed over the past few years…

You can swing it under 25
But enjoy paying like 3x the rate.

Bit that bullet twice
Had to do that for the honeymoon though.
As for the ?, he’s Kid Rick til someone younger breaks the rotation, though some would argue his plunking and subsequent mastering of Kevin Youkilis was pretty manish.
don't forget
“lower car insurance rates” because that one is probably more meaningful.

I have actually never called him that in any of my writing, but I do enjoy reading it
Besides, “Man Rick” isn’t nearly as catchy.
Big Rick?

I think the name should just stick...
Haven’t there been lots of really good players over the years to keep the “kid” part of their nicknames?
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
You are right
According to this page these guys all had “kid” somewhere in their nickname (there were others as well that are too recent or that I didn’t recognize):
Gary Carter (“The Kid”)
Willie Mays (“The Say Hey Kid”)
Ted Williams (“Kid”)
Robin Yount (“The Kid”)
Ken Griffey Jr (“Kid”)
Oddly enough, Rick Porcello is on the list as well, but just as “The Kid,” not “Kid Rick.” Anyone feel like editing the page?

By the way, I'd recommend checking out the list of Tiger nicknames on that page
There are several that I’d never heard before that make me laugh.

I never knew some people called Polly "peanut"
Polly likes crackers, not peanuts. Even if the shape of his head suggests as much. : )
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
Given that I've got 14 years on the guy...he'll be a kid in my book forever....
But that nickname has got to stick for a couple of years at least. Maybe when he gets to his 3rd or 4th year in the league it’ll start fading.
Got one to add to the pile, though: Just like some of us refer to Justin Verlander as “Jason” sometimes when he’s struggling, I propose that we call Porcello “Freddy” when he’s having a nightmarish outing.
Official BYB Juju Consultant...now accepting rally creature applications!
as long as we never see Freddy vs. Jason
I’m ok. Keep them both in a Tiger uniform.

Thank you
Generally I wouldn’t say anything, but it’s so catchy I felt I had to mention that it was me.
