NLCS Game 5 Open Thread
Not to put any pressure on either the Dodgers or Angels, but if the West Coast contingent of baseball's final four doesn't get it in gear, we could go nearly a week without postseason baseball. The World Series is scheduled to start next Wednesday.
Of course, the Phillies surely want to end this series tonight and prevent taking another trip out to L.A. And you have to wonder how the Dodgers feel after blowing that lead on Monday night, and having two days to dwell on it.
The Game 5 starting pitchers are Vicente Padilla for L.A and Cole Hamels for Philly.
True Blue L.A. and The Good Phight are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

whaddya reckon, do the Dodgers live to fight another day?
Philly apparently greased their poles in anticipation of victory.
Get your minds out of the gutter and see what I mean. :)

I sure hope so.
Five-game series are boring. I like them six or seven games – more exciting that way.

Sorry, I just saw it on digg.

If the pattern holds
Then now is time for another three-run homer. :(

Walks and hit batters
Have KILLED the Dodgers. The pitchers have all been pitching so tentatively, and it’s not possible to pitch around everyone in the lineup.

I don't get it
I didn’t watch a ton of Dodgers games during the regular season, but I saw enough to know that the Dodgers’ bullpen is very good and the Phillies’ bullpen struggled during the regular season, and yet it’s like they’ve switched places. I wonder what happened.

me,either
They are quite young and inexperienced, though. Maybe some stage fright (reminds me of the Tigers in 2006). :(

I don't remember our boys walking that many Cardinals, though
I could be wrong. It was a long time ago and I was not nearly as well-versed in the ins and outs of baseball as I am now (well, that’s all relative, but you know what I mean). It’s just that everyone talks about the pitcher errors. I remember the one of Joel Zumaya throwing the ball over Brandon Inge’s head, but I can’t remember why he was throwing to third in the first place.

It was more errors than walks
But seemed to me to be the same kind of nervousness, as though with the long layoff they had too much time to think about the magnitude of what they were playing for and got too tight to play as well as they had all year.
It’s like the Dodgers are so afraid of getting hit that they try to pitch around everyone and are too careful.

after our season ended, I hung out at twinkietown, and then at true blue la for this series…
might have go to the yanks site for the WS (if that’s what ends up happening), and see if I can jinx them

I went over to Pinstripe Alley at one point during Game 2
I didn’t join or make my presence known. They were a hard group to figure out, but they kept referring to Robinson Cano as “The Ninja.”
I do NOT want the Phillies to win the World Series again.

Huh.
A team from Pennsylvania goes to the finals twice in a row. This has happened before. I hope the Philleis maintain the 50% success rate of their state predecessors.

The good news is...
We do NOT have to face the Phillies in Interleague play next year, and everyone else in the AL Central does (I think).
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 21, 2009 11:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ILP seemed like such a drag this year,
but if we had maintained our winner percentage during ILP for the whole season (.556), we would have won the division.
by StringTheory on Oct 21, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully we get back to dominating the National League next year like we did 06-08
The opportunity for that happening is certainly there (After all, we play the Pirates, Nats, and D’backs…though that might not be easy if Dan Haren pitches in that series).
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 21, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haren vs. the Tigers
2-4, 4.93 ERA in seven starts. And 55 hits in 45.2 innings.

Sigh
The Phillies are everything the Tigers could have been (had Sheffield and Guillen held up the past two years and if our starting pitching hadn’t imploded in ’08). Now Granderson, Cabrera, and Verlander get older by the day…

I still like our bullpen better than the Phillies' bullpen
(Hopefully we at least bring back Lyon).

Who decides the LCS/WS MVPs?
And (yuck) who SHOULD get it: Ryan Howard or Carlos Ruiz?

Oh, and when was the last time the team who finished the regular season with the best record in baseball actually won the WS?
The Yankees have a shot this year, but it seems like it hasn’t happened in a long time.

My hatred of Joe Torre and Manny Ramirez is vindicated!

heh
I don’t have anything major against Joe Torre, but don’t like Manny much. And now he’s just a 37-year-old outfielder who used to be a huge slugger and is still poor defensively. At least he isn’t signed for another ten years or something like that.

disappointed to see the result
Poor Dodgers fans.
I really hope the Angels can pull it out, but it doesn’t look good. And I wish someone else would get hot for the Yankees, because I hate A-Rod – such a phony. Maybe Teixeira will start hitting a ton and carry them – I like him a lot.
