ALCS Game 5 Open Thread
The Phillies are in the World Series, after finishing off the Dodgers in the NLCS. And like their southern California counterparts, the Angels are staggering in the ALCS. Will the Yankees deliver the knockout punch tonight? (Last time they had a big lead in an ALCS, they weren't able to.) Or might we get a little more baseball between now and next Wednesday?
The starting pitchers for Game 5 are A.J. Burnett for the Yankees and John Lackey for the Angels.
Pinstripe Alley and Halos Heaven are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

Could this get more complicated?
I want the Yankees in the World Series (for strategic purposes), but I want this series to go seven games, so…I’d like the Angels to win tonight and Saturday and the Yankees to win Game 7.
By the way, Tim McCarver’s bit on A-Rod sucked and was hard to follow.
i am so tired of all the guys on both channels at this point :(
ozzie should be amusing during the WS.
Think Fox will be on a 5-second delay?

and they will have to ship in an extra load of "bleeps" just in case

yeah
teixeira, one of the few yankees I like, is definitely not hot. which makes this even more boring.
The worst I've ever seen was a swing that Vlad Guerrero took earlier in this ALCS
He swung and missed on a pitch that was going to bounce into the middle of the left-handed batter’s box.

Watching Bourne Supremacy right now, this’ll end around 9:30 Eastern so I should be just in time for the third inning commercial break #78.

not too much
I’m tossing together a bunch of handouts, books, and stuffed bacteria toys for work tomorrow. :)
A local community college has a Friday morning in October every year where a bunch of people with different jobs come in and set up some kind of display or something about their job and answer questions asked by as many as 2000 high school students bussed in from all over the area about what they actually do in their job, what kind of education is needed, good things and bad things, etc.
It’s the second year I’ve done it and next year I may be on my own as my boss is retiring in six weeks. Quite frankly I prefer it that way, though – I like not having to keep track of another person when I am somewhere.

Stuffed bacteria toys? Nice.
My Med Chem professor brought stuffed virus toys to class that his niece had given out as favors in her wedding.

it's funny to see how the students act
Some of them clearly just want to talk to a couple people and then bug out, but some of them are honestly interested in talking to people and finding out what they heck they actually DO as a chemist or an engineer or a counselor.
I wish they did something like that when I was in high school.

or else
You would have finished undergrad in 3 1/2 years, then made two unsuccessful stabs at grad school before deciding to work for a while until you figure out if there is some subject you really want to spend that much time, effort, and money studying to the exclusion of all else. :)
But I learned a lot anyway, so I can’t complain all that much.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I'm in the same boat
I already have a BA in Media Technology and Arts and I would like nothing more than to be a filmmaker. But the odds of that happening are, well…now I’m in pharmacy school, and by the time I’m done, I’ll have had a full ten years of college education. I’ll also have three degrees (a BA, a BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a Doctor of Pharmacy).
But I loved those 4 years at Denison University. Denison is soooooo much better than UT.

when I was in high school
I wanted to be a biological illustrator. What derailed that is the fact that I like to draw and paint for fun, and if it was my job to be an illustrator, it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. So I guess I’ll just stick with science for a paycheck and art as a creative outlet on my own time.
Hey, at least it pays the bills. :)
I just haven’t found any subject yet that engages my interest so much to the exclusion of all else that I want to devote the time required for a PhD yet – plus there is the added complication that if I went into ecology, fieldwork is always extremely tricky – animals have a way of not doing what you want them to do so you can carry out a well-designed experiment, and missing data points are a given.

Lackey makes me laugh
He looks like such an airheaded dim bulb (even if he’s extremely bright, he just doesn’t look it with his mouth hanging open on the mound).

Oh no! Scott Sizemore left today's game because of an injury.
It was while turning a double-play, and someone slid into him, so hopefully it’s only spike marks on his shin.

It seems like about half the players are older than me, and half of them are younger (the Tigers closest to me in age are Cabrera, who is four months older, and Edwin Jackson, who is a month younger than me).

Posada's the only one I know of who paints his fingernails
I know Pudge (as well as a few other catchers) would put white tape around their fingers if the pitchers couldn’t see the signs on occasion. Other catchers will rub chalk onto their fingers.

Okay, I don't know if there are any Ralphie's up in Michigan
But the ones around here are running a contest where you can win tickets/limo service to the Ohio State-Michigan game, but in the commercial, they never refer to it as “the Ohio State-Michigan game.” They only say that you can win limo service to “The Big House” and tickets to “the big game.” Is this weird?

They may need NCAA approval...
or the approval of U of M, since they are the host. The NCAA doesn’t care much about cheating but that sort of thing does pique their interest.

that's what I'm thinking
Because he left the base and was no longer entitled to it – he could be on either third or home, so he had to be tagged out.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Good job by Lackey.
Did everything the Angels could have hoped for – if they can’t win the game with that effort, they don’t deserve it.

It was right on the corner of the zone, I think.
He was flabbergasted he didn’t get it – and usually when a pitcher has control, he does get that pitch.
I loved how furious he was at being pulled from the game. And he was right, too.

And it was hot and sticky in the summer. I used to get my hair cut short in the summer – then I grew it out far enough that I could wear a ponytail again.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Hmmm
That’s a fair point. I guess the players can’t wear ponytails, because I never see them. My hair goes to the middle of my back, and I’ve had plenty of experience fencing in full gear for two hours at a time in a hot, sweaty gym or a hot, sweaty racquetball court, and the helmet has a piece in the back that makes it impossible to wear a high ponytail. And there was a girl in the Fencing Club with me who had even longer hair. I’m not sure how long it was, since she always wore it braided, but the braid went down to the middle of her thigh. Most of us hung onto a strap in the back of the jacket with our non-sword hand while fencing. She hung onto her braid.
