ALCS Game 6 Open Thread
After a rainout last night, the Angels and Yankees resume the ALCS this evening at Yankee Stadium. The Angels ensured we wouldn't go nearly a week without postseason baseball by winning on Thursday night. Can they push this thing to a Game 7? And if so, will John Lackey start that game?
First things first, of course. Tonight's starting pitchers are Joe Saunders for the Angels and Andy Pettitte for the Yankees.
Halos Heaven and Pinstripe Alley are your SB Nation sites to follow.

I think they need to implant electrodes in the mound
If the pitcher throws over to first more than two times before pitching home, he gets a shock.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Opponents hit .280 against him and he's 4-2?
Why are people acting like he’s The Answer to closing out a series? You play 14 years for the Yankees, sure you’re going to have a lot of series-clinching wins. It’s almost like saying Brett Favre is the best QB ever because he’s thrown the most touchdowns.

I was at my parents today
Using their washing machine, and I thought my mom was going to reach through the television screen and try to throttle Brett Favre. She thinks he’s such a drama queen and nothing special and HATES the man-crush that all the announcers seem to have on him.
She laughed quite evilly when he threw an interception. :D

two things
1 – It isn’t in a conveniently squashable location. I have a few things on the table under the lamp that I don’t want to risk breaking; if it was on the wall I’d have a shoe on my hand in a second and it would be flattened.

The fact that they get a total pass for their legion of PED users.

right here.
Basically, with as much as we know now about inherent advantages that some athletes have over others, it might be time to really think about sports as a competition on a level playing field. Does level mean “no one is enhanced by chemistry, so the determining factor is accidents of genetics” or “all have access to the same technologies, so the determining factor is hard work and dedication.”

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 25, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't remember errors involving bunts, but I don't remember a lot of detail
The only errors I remember (and I know there were more):
Verlander with an errant pickoff throw
Zumaya throwing a ball over the head of Inge (I can’t remember what he was trying to do)
Rodney making an error (I don’t remember what it was)
Granderson slipping and falling on a wet outfield trying to catch a ball hit by Eckstein (?)
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 25, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions
The Granderson one I'll remember the rest of my life.
Monroe also got a late break on a ball, dove for it, and it went off his glove to the wall.
I believe Zoom’s was on bunt where he wheeled and threw a heater halfway to Kansas City in Inge’s general direction.
And why was he throwing to Inge?
Incidentally, that was the first time I ever saw Zumaya. I didn’t watch as much baseball in 2006 as I do now, and none of the regular season games I saw had Zumaya pitching in them.

Runners at 1st and 2nd.
Going for the lead runner.
Zoom was banged up, as usual, for much of the regular season.
Most of the games I saw in 2006 either featured the Tigers either blowing out the opposition or getting blown out themselves

where Rodney pitched the 7th, Zoom the 8th, and Jonesy the 9th.
Which of course led our sentimental old fool of a skipper to think that would remain effective for the rest of recorded time.

I didn’t see Verlander for the first time until the postseason either.

It could be worse
It could be Red Sox-Phillies

I'd rather cheer for H1N1 than either team in this series. Ugh.

So...here's my assessment
Had the Tigers made the postseason, they likely wouldn’t have made it past the Yankees, but with their pitching, they had a shot, albeit a slim one. Had they made it past the Yankees, I think they would’ve had a decent chance at beating the Angels in the ALCS, given how poorly the Angels played. However, I don’t think they would’ve beaten the Phillies. The Phils just have too much offense, particularly from the left side.

I think the Tigers would have gone to 5 against New York, and I think they could have won.
but that’s just me.
JV, E-Jax and Kid Rick > Pettitte, Burnett, and CC
the hitting obv favours New York. But good pitching beats good hitting.
I know for sure we would have matched up much better against the Yankees than the Twins. Anyone would agree with that.
Okay...bedtime now
Good night, everyone.

Wasn't here the whole game but...
It made me chuckle when one of the announcers (Buck?) complimented Brian Cashman for the additions to the team in the offseason…. Seriously, it was a genius move to add CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Mark Teixeira…. Why didn’t any other team in MLB think of that? Hmmmmm….
Go Phils….
No kidding.
it’s tough to manage a team with an open checkbook full of blank checks.
Go Phils. For all that is holy.
