World Series Game 2 Open Thread
The Philadelphia Phillies gave the New York Yankees a fine "How do you do?" in Game 1 of the World Series, with a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance from Cliff Lee and two home runs from Chase Utley. But by winning, have the Fightins already decided this series? The Game 1 winner has gone on to win the last six World Series championships, and 11 of the last 12.
The starting pitchers for Game 2 are Pedro Martinez ("Who's Your Daddy?") for the Phillies and A.J. Burnett for the Yankees.
Some lineup notes: Joe Girardi is benching Nick Swisher in favor of Jerry Hairston, Jr. in right field tonight. Hairston is 10-for-27 lifetime against Martinez. And because Burnett wouldn't have it any other way, Jose Molina is catching for the Yankees, putting Jorge Posada on the bench. For the Phillies, Matt Stairs is the DH, with Raul Ibanez starting in left field.
Once again, The Good Phight and Pinstripe Alley are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

I'm actually stoked to hear john legend sing the nat'l anthem
I guess that’s one good thing about the yankees being rich
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys were great
Though the idea of a pre-game concert on the field made me cringe initially.

Same here
But most of it is because I really hate seeing the Yankees win, last year I was backing the Rays.
Well, we've got four hours to kill.

That's a good idea
There’s more to it than that (I went to New York when I was 11 and loved the city, my respected source of baseball knowledge is a Yankees fan, etc), but I’d like to spare the rest of you a rehash of what I said last night. Because those were some really long comments.

At the risk of sounding really, really dumb...
Could someone explain the Pedro Martinez “Who’s your daddy” references? I get the feeling this is something that happened while I was in college (and central Ohio isn’t exactly a baseball hotbed).
When Pedro was in Boston
Before one of the games in the ALCS, I think he was asked about how the Yankees dominated him in Yankee Stadium, and he responded with something like “You might as well call the Yankees my daddy”.
“In the 2004 American League Championship Series it was used as a chant by New York Yankees fans against Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martínez (prompted by his previous statement, “They beat me. They’re that good right now. They’re that hot. I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy.”5)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed
It’s funny. One’s a pitcher that I don’t particularly like watching who pitches for a team I’m fairly neutral toward. The other is a pitcher that I would like to watch if not for the fact that HE pitches for a team I loathe.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions
so they're going to tell us what the pitches are based on the signs
and be wrong half the night again? what have baseball fans done to deserve this..
Hee hee
I can read some signs, but not all of them, and even I have had instances where the Fox guys say, “Oh, he’s coming in with a fastball,” and meanwhile I’m looking at the closeup of the catcher and thinking, “I could’ve sworn that’s the slider sign.” Sure enough, the next pitch is a slider.

And Brandon would have had that even when both knees were at their crunchiest. :)

Career caught stealing percentage?
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he's always had a pretty good percentage, but not at the level of Pudge/Molinas
He sure did this year, though.

Huh. I sold Gerald a little short in my assessment
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lairdge01.shtml
He’s been at 40% or better most seasons, but he had a couple seasons where he was just under 30%. Career, he’s at 39%. Definitely decent.

Verlander vs. Pedro matchup
That would be fun to see. :(
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Yay, my internet came back
Right after Teixiera hit the home run, too. (Now that would be a hilarious reason to root for the Yankees if my internet only worked as long as their offense did)
Thought I would have a dilemma between baseball and the Wings.
Oilers score 42 seconds in, I’m watching baseball.
heh
Same identical decision here.
Plus I won’t be able to watch the hockey until the end anyway since it’s so late. And I haven’t watched the previous game yet, and if I get them too far out of order it confused the heck out of me. :)
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
not that I don't think they can come back
But so far this year they have won more often when I have not watched than when I have. Maybe if I ignore them they will do better in this game.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
although I would trade a loss
For getting out of Edmonton without catching the flu. The Oilers are riddled with it.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
checking on the goalscorers
I can’t feel bad for Ales Hamsky – he’s been struggling a bit. And I like Dustin Penner fine, partly because he got ragged so badly when he signed with Edmonton as though it was all his fault that the team lost draft picks in the offer sheet. I like the Oilers.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
so ....
Anyone else remember some of the talking heads going on and on about how much of an offensive series this would be with two powerful lineups and the Yankee bandbox giving up homeruns like crazy? :D
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
me neither
That’s why I thought it was so funny. No matter how good offensively teams are, the pitching matters more in the playoffs.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Ah
Get used to it. Citizen’s Bank Park is a bandbox as well.

I do

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
agree with the comment below
Make him work in the eighth, and they can get to him in the ninth.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Of course, that all comes with the premise that Pedro holds them down......
which doesn’t appear to be happening.
There's a Yankees fan I know who would totally agree with that statement
He hates it when Rivera is out there for two-inning saves

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I'm really growing to hate these fans.
Did they not notice they spent most of the game losing? They still only have a one-run lead? Philly already has the split they needed on the road?
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
A one run lead
is often enough for the Yanks, unfortunately :(
still
It’s the seventh inning. Seems a mite premature to be celebrating. (Especially since, unlikely though it may be, the Phillies already put themselves in a position to not have the series return to New York at all.)
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Boy, that would be unreal
I was at game 5 last year for the clincher in Philly – I don’t expect the same this year, but ya never know…
that must have been a blast
The closest I got was watching my local minor-league team clinch a playoff spot for the first time ever. At any level, it’s pretty awesome to see a group celebrating like that, though.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
just generally taunting Martinez and being childish about it
Just strikes me as funny considering how quiet they were all game until he was tiring and started to give up some hits.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I think the booing is mostly related to that press conference
But for what it’s worth, the fans at Pinstripe Alley didn’t really think that highly of the booing.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Philly fans have the rep for booing
But it’s really kind of overblown. We only boo if someone deserves it.
Rod Allen likes to say you guys booed Santa Claus
But to be fair, Tiger fans can be rather trigger-happy as well.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions
that was Eagles fans, I thought
Football fans seem to be more boozed up than other sports.

Uh oh

worst thing about the World Series
The games are so freaking long and start so late that it’s difficult to stay up all the way through.
Hate it. :(
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
What in the hell was that?
Captain America just bunted foul for strike three? What in the world!!!!!

Maybe he thought, “I’m tired of people hating me just because of media overexposure”
Maybe, but unlikely :-)
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
The phils got the benefit there
I’m not used to that.
Except that the home plate umpire probably knows it
and the strike zone just grew to the size of a hula hoop during the commercial.
at least it was close enough to be understandable
Some of them have been so obvious it was almost impossible to see how anyone could get it wrong.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Howard knows he didn't catch it.
Otherwise he would have just stepped on first to get Posada instead of throwing it to second to tag him.
Oh Boy...
here comes Rivera… cue the ominous music
Just once, I want to see that music cued up to a montage of absurdly long rundown plays
That and the Benny Hill theme

wow
That wasn’t even as much of a bounce as a two-inch roll into his glove. Tough call to make – even on the replay that was tricky to see.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
"pedro" is trending on twitter
and half the tweets that have his name in them are asking who he is. oh well. haha
Heresy!
Vote early! Vote often! Vote Inge!
(Sorry, it was a reflex.)
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I like Inge
I had him on my fantasy team as a catcher for a few years.
I hated it the first time I saw it and turned it off an hour in
second time I watched it I was stoned and laughed my ass off. have loved it since
stop trying to jinx him with the homer talk
All he needs is a double – that is then misplayed by Noodlearm
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Believe it or not
I saw sabreRose Tiger on the Dodger site, and I was curious to find out why he/she was not rooting for the Phillies – I assumed that Detroit fans would not like the yankees. It does seem that most here are not rooting for the yanks, so that’s cool ;)
Gotcha
Hopefully, I can show that there are some good qualities to the Phils – and not all phillies fans are crazed booers ;)
Oh, every fanbase has its good and bad. You seem pretty nice.
And you’re by no means at the bottom of the totem pole. If it were the Red Sox in the WS, I’d totally be rooting for you. As I said, it’s complicated (both in terms of the Phillies and the Yankees).
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions
hee
I don’t think it’s possible for me to root for the Yankees.
Initially I didn’t like the Phillies, but that was just because they beat the Dodgers and I was rooting for the Dodgers because they have a minor-league team in my hometown. But I don’t have anything other than that against the Phillies, so it was just a passing strong dislike more than the feelings I have for New York. :)
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
which is in turn nothing like the feelings I have for the Twins and the White Sox
Divisional rivals are by far the most evil of all evil foes.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Naturally there's a big rivalry
between NY and Philly – they are close in distance, and NY teams have won many more titles in recent years until the phils finally won one last year.
Okay, the balance of the universe has been restored
Both teams have now benefited from a blown call

Wow, this game might end before I get my homework done
But I shouldn’t be surprised by this because this assignment is impossible. The answers (or anything that would help me determine the answers) are NOT in the textbook, they are NOT in our notes, and our professor did NOT discuss them in class, so I’m not sure how I’m supposed to answer them.

Are too darned late for us easterners… Zzzzz…
Time to see if my comeback theory comes true
Rivera had to work in the 8th, although FOX shows the guys due up are 2 for 22 lifetime against Mariano. Insert roller coaster?
Utley was key -
Howard seems to be strugging today, and the second half of the order is not filling me with confidence!
Not looking good.
I still feel good about the Phillies though, Hamels and then is Lee going again in Game 4?
Lee isn't certain yet - he could wait for game 5
Unless the phils are down 1-2, then Lee might pitch game 4
I feel good about the Phillies too.
They got the split they needed – a sweep of the first two would have been gravy.
Both games close, no team is dramatically better than the other.
Phillies now have home ice advantage, so they have last at bats in the next games.
