24 days ago: Philadelphia Phillies' Cliff Lee, left, is congratulated by Jimmy Rollins (11), Jayson Werth (28) and Ryan Howard, right, after defeating the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the Major League Baseball World Series Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, in New York. The Phillies won 6-1 to lead the series 1-0. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

The Philadelphia Phillies gave the New York Yankees a fine "How do you do?" in Game 1 of the World Series, with a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance from Cliff Lee and two home runs from Chase Utley.  But by winning, have the Fightins already decided this series?  The Game 1 winner has gone on to win the last six World Series championships, and 11 of the last 12.

The starting pitchers for Game 2 are Pedro Martinez ("Who's Your Daddy?") for the Phillies and A.J. Burnett for the Yankees.

Some lineup notes: Joe Girardi is benching Nick Swisher in favor of Jerry Hairston, Jr. in right field tonight.  Hairston is 10-for-27 lifetime against Martinez.  And because Burnett wouldn't have it any other way, Jose Molina is catching for the Yankees, putting Jorge Posada on the bench.  For the Phillies, Matt Stairs is the DH, with Raul Ibanez starting in left field.

Once again, The Good Phight and Pinstripe Alley are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

I concur

As much as I only slightly care about this series.

That's a good idea

There’s more to it than that (I went to New York when I was 11 and loved the city, my respected source of baseball knowledge is a Yankees fan, etc), but I’d like to spare the rest of you a rehash of what I said last night. Because those were some really long comments.

At the risk of sounding really, really dumb...

Could someone explain the Pedro Martinez “Who’s your daddy” references? I get the feeling this is something that happened while I was in college (and central Ohio isn’t exactly a baseball hotbed).

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

When Pedro was in Boston

Before one of the games in the ALCS, I think he was asked about how the Yankees dominated him in Yankee Stadium, and he responded with something like “You might as well call the Yankees my daddy”.

by Elfuego51 on Oct 29, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“In the 2004 American League Championship Series it was used as a chant by New York Yankees fans against Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martínez (prompted by his previous statement, “They beat me. They’re that good right now. They’re that hot. I just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddy.”5)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed

It’s funny. One’s a pitcher that I don’t particularly like watching who pitches for a team I’m fairly neutral toward. The other is a pitcher that I would like to watch if not for the fact that HE pitches for a team I loathe.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 29, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and be wrong half the night again? what have baseball fans done to deserve this..

by allikazoo on Oct 29, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hee hee

I can read some signs, but not all of them, and even I have had instances where the Fox guys say, “Oh, he’s coming in with a fastball,” and meanwhile I’m looking at the closeup of the catcher and thinking, “I could’ve sworn that’s the slider sign.” Sure enough, the next pitch is a slider.

Oilers score 42 seconds in, I’m watching baseball.

Same identical decision here.

Plus I won’t be able to watch the hockey until the end anyway since it’s so late. And I haven’t watched the previous game yet, and if I get them too far out of order it confused the heck out of me. :)

I can’t feel bad for Ales Hamsky – he’s been struggling a bit. And I like Dustin Penner fine, partly because he got ragged so badly when he signed with Edmonton as though it was all his fault that the team lost draft picks in the offer sheet. I like the Oilers.

Exactly

Usually most teams have premiere pitching, plus taking the difficulty of hitting a major league pitcher and adding the pressure of the postseason and effort to matter in a game results in low scoring games.

still

It’s the seventh inning. Seems a mite premature to be celebrating. (Especially since, unlikely though it may be, the Phillies already put themselves in a position to not have the series return to New York at all.)

I don’t think it’s possible for me to root for the Yankees.

Initially I didn’t like the Phillies, but that was just because they beat the Dodgers and I was rooting for the Dodgers because they have a minor-league team in my hometown. But I don’t have anything other than that against the Phillies, so it was just a passing strong dislike more than the feelings I have for New York. :)
