BYB Open Thread: Royals at Twins

  Zack Greinke (16-8, 2.06) vs.   Nick Blackburn (11-11, 4.08), 4:10 p.m. EST

Editor's Note: The Tigers-White Sox GameThread will be posted immediately after the conclusion of this ballgame.

Since Tiger Town has a strong interest in what happens this afternoon at the Metrodome, we thought an Open Thread might be a good idea.

How will you pitch, Zack Greinke?  A nation (of Tigers fans) turns its lonely eyes to you.  (Woo woo woo.)  But can he shut down the Twins in two consecutive games?  In his last start, Greinke held the Twins to one run over seven innings, with eight strikeouts.  That was at Kansas City.  Will things be different at the Metrodome?

A Minnesota loss reduces Detroit's magic number to one.  Of course, that doesn't affect what the Tigers need to do tonight against the White Sox.

Probably because we know that KC is firing its last bullet?

Let’s face it. Minnesota will almost assuredly win tomorrow.

the reason that makes me laugh

Is because it reminds me of a television show, many years ago, where two women in an office were talking and one asked her friend how she could make anything sound dirty. Then she went through different phrases that could be imagined as euphamisms for sex.

“Fluff your poodle” for use if you were dating a dog groomer and “Check your undercarriage” if you were dating a mechanic are the only ones I remember.

I have been invited to tonight's game

Yesterday a drug rep who comes into the clinic where I work and gave a secretary a pair of tickets, so I went with her last night. About an hour ago my good friend called and said she has an extra ticket for tonight and really wants me there when we clinch. About a month ago I got tickets to tomorrow’s game, solely because it’s the last game game of the regular season. I have never been so anxious about anything in my life, not even when I went into labor with my son….

by Detroitchik on Oct 3, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it makes sense

In labor, at least you know at the end you are going to have a baby. With baseball, there is no telling what you are going to get at the end of the event.

me too. I am ready to take a tranquilizer. I am not even Catholic, but I bought a candle and said a blessing and lit it. I prayed for our bats to be sturdy, our minds to be alert, our feet to be swift and our gloves to be able. ( not kidding, I lit it just before Zack took the mound, oh and for Zack to be accurate) And in case that doesn’t work I also sacrificed a chicken…..

I only saw the first period today

But they have had really uneven efforts. Yesterday was 30 minutes of excellent, crisp hockey, about five to ten minutes of brain-dead low effort hockey, and then a better finish. Today they looked very good in the first period.

I think it will be easier to judge once they are playing in a more normal environment. They were all so excited to go to Sweden, but athletes are people too, and I’m guessing despite all their best efforts they have been a little more distracted than they would normally be.

The players and Leyland of course bear responsibility, but Dombrowski brought in the disasters Huff and Washburn while handcuffing our spending with bad contracts over the last couple of seasons

I'll tell you this, though ...

If – IF – the Twins make it to the playoffs, they damn well better beat the fraking Yankees and make it WORTH it. None of this getting swept out in the first round like a pesky bug bullshit. They better deliver something.

Sorry, I like the Yankees better than I like the Twins

The Yankees are fairly benign. The Twins are annoying. And uninteresting.

I always root for the Yankees to go out as soon as possible

Because I get so bloody tired of hearing about them. Them and the Red Sox.

Twins can lose in the second round after they have done the job I want them to do.

Of course, if the Tigers can just win two stupid games at home, it won’t be a problem.

I wouldn't expect much

From the team that was swept out of the first round in ‘06 by the Athletics. It’s just ridiculous how many breaks Minnesota is getting. From the rainout that forced a doubleheader on Tuesday, Peavy moving up to pitch yesterday, Jackson’s worst start of the season happening in his most important, Cuddyer replacing Morneau to hit the best of his career, the Sox being unable to win even ONE game at HOME against the Twins last week, Kansas City playing there best of the season near the end against us and taking 5 out of 6. Just the all time shit storm reigning down upon us. We are so close to becoming the ’07 Mets. Reduced to a punchline for years to come.

It's the Royals

3 runs in one inning is a success. They had one opportunity to bring runs in from third with less than 2 outs and they did it, as crappy as it was.
