Game 161 Overflow Thread

So far, this game has a dreadfully familiar feel to it.  The Tigers' lineup isn't generating much offense, and taking a chance with Alfredo Figaro starting this game didn't work out very well.

Can the Tigers bats do what they did to Freddy Garcia last Saturday?  Or will there be a tie in the AL Central by the end of the night?

White Sox 3, Tigers 0 going to the fourth inning.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff. However, it does reflect the views of this particular fan, which is as important as anything else written here at BYB.

the saddest thing is

That this entire season, the pitching staff has deserved better. The whole time.

The offensive “offensive” players should buy each of the pitchers a house for making them not look quite so horrible all year long.

lol

Seriously, this is so comical.

Every other team can get people on with a walk, or a single, or something, and then someone hits another single, and then a double, and then a run is scored.

With the Tigers, it is a single, followed by three straight outs that never leave the infield. This team can’t even get long fly balls until after there are already two outs, so no runs scored on sacrifice flies, either.

We have just proven how predictably bad they are.

Do we need a new hitting coach for next season?

by actioncuse on Oct 3, 2009 8:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I never understood how

guys that don’t have at least a .300 career average are batting coaches.. I mean we had Don Slaught and now McClendon..

Don Slaught was like a poor man’s Gerald Laird

by Boney on Oct 3, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yup

Even if he has nothing to do with anything, the hitting coach takes the fall for a crappy offense. It has ever been thus.

I think blaming the hitting coach is overrated

this is just a team that is aging. Guys in their mid-30’s screwed the offense with either injuries of ineffectiveness for much of the year: Polanco, Guillen, Ordonez…

very true

One of my brothers was on vacation with friends in Vegas before the season started, and the line on the Tigers was 81 wins. He was going to bet they would get less than that because he figured it would be an easy win.

The perspective will come for most people in time, I think – just right now it really hurts, because to get so close and see the offense let down the pitching time after time after time after time, and looking around and seeing the teams that are capable of scoring a lot of runs …

It would just have been nice a FEW WEEKS in the season to have a little bit of that when it mattered. Just a little bit of offense.

No patience, no ability, no clue. Garcia has not thrown his off speed stuff for strikes all night…his fastball has not broken 89 mph. Any worthy team would be lighting him up like a Christmas tree. good for him

he’s still hitting .280 with 14 homeruns and 40+ rbi

whereas Guillen is an embarrassment as a 5th place hitter…

by Boney on Oct 3, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If our lineup tomorrow is not

Raburn
Polanco
Thames
Cabrera
Magglio
Granderson
Laird
Inge
Santiago

we will lose. sit Guillen on the bench. I’d rather have a heart attack from Raburn’s defense than know that every flyball to left at Guillen has a chance to fall in

by Boney on Oct 3, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is likely what the lineup will be (except probably Thames and Maggs flipped)

Guillen hasn’t been starting against lefties. Everett will probably play short, though.

Maggs may be hitting .400+ in september

but he has not used the lower half of his body in any of the games I’ve watched this entire week…

our 3rd place hitter is a very slow version of Ichiro Suzuki

by Boney on Oct 3, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have NEVER

seen so many hitters take called 3rd strikes in my entire baseball playing life…

NEVER

Since the Tigers have been playing on national tv this entire week almost, far too many called 3rd strikes. Mostly from Inge, too.

by Boney on Oct 3, 2009 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Usually when Brandon Ks, it's swinging

So the called thirds are mystifying.

Thoughts on the Division lead ...

Does anybody like our chances if we lose tonight? Never been a pessimist but it’s hard to stay positive here.

i don't like our chances

because the twins will not lose the at the metrodome and they wont have to play anywhere else

by Tigersin2010 on Oct 3, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

From another pessimist...

I still like your chances…but I’m a Twins fan, and we Minnesotans are a gloomy bunch.

Uff-da...

Honestly, I’m not sure what I’m going to be feeling on Monday night…I became a Packer fan pretty late, partially because I got sick of watching the Vikes lose all the time (for the record, the Pack went 4-12 my first year of full fandom)

But now, Favre…I don’t know what emotions I’ll be feeling on Monday…

ha ha ha

I don’t follow football at all, really – but I’m kind of hoping that Green Bay wins just because Farve gets so much smooching from the media, and Aaron Rodgers (sp?) dealt with so much drama and just waited until his turn to play. Most football players seem like such whining babies.

Minnesotans have been scarred too many times

At least Vikings fans have. Last year’s 1 game playoff loss has to be equally as worse in terms of the distress scale.

then it goes to a tiebreaker in the Dome without JV to pitch

only one I can think of pre-'06 is Magglio's

what about Dontrelle, Robertson, Guillen, Bonderman, and Sheffield

That’s 60 mil right there for this year and near 50 mil for next year

What about how pathetic this team was prior to acquiring any of the guys pre-06

give the guy a break, it’s not like the guys didnt deserve the contracts they got (except Willis)

Do not agree

Dombrowski traded for a good pitcher and a good hitter when he needed to. I thought they were great trades. No one could have predicted thier collapse

I have to put this at the feet of the line up

DD realized that the porous defense cost them so much last year that he fixed it, and the pitchers have done their jobs
the batters have not been able to consistently hit and so they pitching efforts are often wasted

it's Dombrowski's fault that just happened

without Dombrowski trading for Cabrera, Sean Casey wouldn’t have been batting cleanup in that position… Craig Monroe would’ve just struck out and left 2 runners on with 2 out
