BYOBYB: Friday Open Thread

It's Friday and a little bit slow, so how about some BYOBYB?  If you're new to these parts, it's the open thread where you can chat about whatever's on your mind, whether it's the Tigers, baseball in general, or something completely off-topic.

Here are some possible topics to bat around:

  • Curtis Granderson's Marvin Miller Man of the Year award.  (Comments for this should probably go in the FanPost that was posted.)
  • What are you dressing up as for Halloween this year?  Are you going to any parties?  If you have kids, are you taking them trick-or-treating?
  • How are you feeling about this World Series so far after two games?
  • Was last night's episode of Community the best of the season or what?
  • I've been eyeing this new Verizon Droid phone, but don't know if I really need something like that.  What kind of smartphone are you carrying around?
  • What's the last movie you went out to see?  (Or, heck, watched on DVD?)  I still haven't made it to Where the Wild Things Are, and I'm getting twitchy.
  • Are you already sick of pumpkin-flavored stuff (lattes, muffins, donuts, beer, etc.)?  Or do you love this time of year?  Is there something that isn't yet pumpkin-flavored, but should be?  Like a Taco Bell item?

Those are just suggestions, of course.  This open thread belongs to you, the people.  And with that, have a good weekend.  I'm thinking it'll be a light weekend of posts, but we'll certainly have a World Series open thread.

Is it spring yet?

I miss the Tigers :)

Ian, if you are getting a new phone soon, the Droid is one of the best options. It can do everything (check out engadget.com for a review). I have a G1 which runs the same OS, Android, and I absolutely love it. No reason to not buy a smartphone these days.

I'd wait for a bit more of a substantial review

From someone like Walt Mossberg, Andy Ihnatko etc. who are actually going to spend a week with the phone unlike the Engadget guys who go “OH LOOK IT’S SHINY” and move on.

I've just discovered MGMT and TV on the Radio.

Am I way behind the times on these guys? Either way, I’ve listened to “Kids” (MGMT) and “Wolf Like Me” (TV on the Radio) more times than I can count during the past two days.

TVOTR is pretty good

One of my friends likens them to a black Radiohead- though Wolf Like Me is kind of old.

I’ve been listening to a lot of the Duke Spirit recently. That and Street Sweeper Social Club (which is kind of a big divide musically).

I am no fan of TV on the Radio. I bought that album you mentioned without a listen, heard it once and passed it on.

Have you listened to M83? Good band that should fit in. “Graveyard Girl” is excellent.

My ear worm of the week: We Were Promised Jetpacks’ “Quiet Little Voices.”

hey, I know M83!

Even though my music tastes diverge greatly from the people posting in here…

I got the Saturday = Youth (or whatever it was) for review purposes…and looking at said review, it looks like I really liked the songs I liked and really hated the other ones.

Check it out if you’re curious.

WEEKEND

Community was really funny, for sure.

I hate Halloween. Most annoying holiday of the year.

by MackAveKurt on Oct 30, 2009 4:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't do halloween either

there was talk of dragging me to a party and I had a half-assed idea of dressing as Zack Greinke and carrying a chipotle burrito around, but 1) nobody here would get it and 2) that could get expensive

I stay my ass in my apartment. Especially since Halloween falls on a Saturday and I live on a college campus. We get it, sweetie. You’re slutty Bo Peep/Red Riding Hood/whatever you are this year. Shut up.

yup.

Bad thing is everyone in chicago seems to be having a party, so I feel almost obligated to go. Would rather stay home and not feel old.

I'm not much into the Halloween thing

but my friends are, so…off to hang with the little kiddies out on State Street I will go. I’ll try not to feel like a dirty old man…but since right now I’m leaning towards a Mr. Rogers thing, maybe I should play up that aspect?

I was gonna do the Cheech Marin character from Born in East La, but I look in the mirror and see wanna be gangsta instead…time to shave and pull out the cardigan-ish sweater.

See, I love Halloween, but it's been years since I've done anything special besides hand candy out to kids

I haven’t dressed up since my senior year of college (Zorro). I keep meaning to every year, but I always end up just throwing on a jersey and calling myself a sports fan. If I had a party to go to or something, I might be more motivated (I love the idea of it, but when it comes time to actually dress up, I get really self-conscious and shy).

Go see Zombieland

Seen it three times since release- including a midnight showing (by far the best movie experience I’ve ever had).

going to see

a serious man tonight!

regarding pumpkins, I don’t even like pumpkin pie but this weekend I’m helping mom attempt to make it from an actual pumpkin instead of a can. should be amusing.

You'll have to tell us how that is

I thought it was hilarious

it had a very lebowski feel to it, which I wholeheartedly support. I like all Coen bros movies, but that particular style is my favorite.

Law Abiding Citizen

Good flick. Highly recommended. Gerard Butler makes with the creepy extremely well.

Aww, looks like I missed the party. Stupid work.

Just for fun, I decided to give my new laptop a test run by bringing up an archived MLB.tv game. Much to my delight, I was able to watch it in fullscreen with the highest HD setting and the video was not choppy at all. It was wonderful.

whee for the new computer!

and an unchoppy baseball experience, too

Good timing, too

Since all of a sudden, my desktop computer has gone on strike as far as SBN is concerned. BYB (or its fellow blogs) will not “finish” loading on Firefox ever, and it’s really slow on Internet Explorer. All this started late last night, and I haven’t figured out what the problem is. Still, BYB is working just fine on the laptop.

I'm having the same problem with Fail blog...

and it’s associated lolz. I’m not sure what is causing it.

On the subject of pumpkin products

I don’t care much for pumpkin pie/cake/rolls/cookies. I bought a bag of pumpkin seeds on a whim the other day, and they kind of remind me of giant sunflower seeds. The thing is, I love sunflower seeds, but I only like them when they’re packaged out of the shell, and pumpkin seeds don’t come that way (I haven’t figured out how to get the seed out of the shell while keeping it in my mouth and eat the seed without chewing on or swallowing the shell. I know ball players can do this).

Pumpkin seeds...

<3

I bought two just for the seeds- gone in less than 48 hours. They were delicious.

pumpkin seeds do come that way!

check the bulk bin at your grocery, or a health food store. I buy them roasted and salted all the time.. they may be called pepitas on the label.
