Both the Yankees and Phillies started their new pitching acquisitions in Games 1 and 2 of the World Series, but are coming back with homegrown products for Game 3.

Though he left to play with the Astros for three years, Andy Pettitte began his career with the Yankees and has played nine of his 12 seasons in New York.  This will be his seventh start in the World Series.  Cole Hamels goes for the Phillies, and the fact that he's starting Game 3 speaks to how he's struggled this year.

What, no Spotlight Curtis Granderson? It’s not a true rain delay.

Ozzie Guillen on the even-more-interminable pregame show is a poor substitute.

Good evening

Hope everyone had a good Halloween. I got high-fived by a ten-year-old when he saw my Olde English D pumpkin. Most kids were more impressed by my Garfield pumpkin, though.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 31, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

plenty of kids for me

It actually stopped raining this afternoon and the wind died down, so it was decent trick-or-treating weather. And I still have four more bags of candy, but unloaded a lot since I obeyed the flu precautions and handed it out myself instead of letting the kids root through the bowl. They usually only take one piece – I hand it out by handfuls. :)

too bad :(

One of my nephew’s cousins is sick, so I gave my sister some extra candy for him to eat when he gets better.

My sister said the techs where she works felt bad that he couldn’t go trick or treating because he has H1N1, so they went out on their lunch hour and bought some candy and matchbox cars and small toys and made up a bad for him. She almost cried because they were so sweet about it.

I DON'T CARE ABOUT STUPID BRETT FAVRE!!!!

Brett Favre version 1.0 was okay, I guess - even for non-Packer fans.

Versions 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 were successively more whiny and irritating.

Other members of my family are fans of many different sports, so I have a pretty good idea on which cities have teams in which sports – but if I don’t follow the sport I have no idea which players are on a team, so I hear about so-and-so scoring a bunch of points for a basketball team (for example) and I will recognize the name but be surprised he is on that team because I remember vaguely who he played for three teams ago.

The umpires were saying Verlander wasn’t coming to a complete stop. Rogers and Pettitte move toward home plate with their lead foot, but they never call it.

It would have to have been an opponent. Mario and Rod wouldn’t say that about one of the Tigers.

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 31, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it was an opponent

I can’t remember who, but my GOD he was slooooooooooooooooooow.

It wasn’t even because he threw over to first to hold the runner as he kept stepping off the rubber, looking over at first, stepping back on, getting signs from the catcher, glancing over to first, looking back at home, the batter stepped out of the box (probably to get the blood circulating to his extremities again), he went back to the rosin bag, stepped back on the rubber, looked in for the signs, glanced over at first (where the runner had probably dozed off standing up by this time), finally came set and delivered the pitch – for ball one.

It was a freaking NIGHTMARE. If I had been at the game I would have charged the field and throttled him just because it would have sped the game up to delay it for body removal.

Don't mean to offend, I know you're rooting for the Yanks.

But that payroll is absurd, as is their entire way of doing business. In two years they’ll have Mauer. Next year they’ll have Holliday. It’s totally indefensible in my opinion. They’re a failure for not having won the last 9 seasons in my opinion. That’s how pronounced their advantage is over every other team, even Boston.

Happ has to go at least 3.

Can’t burn the pen tonight. Gonna need it tomorrow.

Dang, my vision is getting blurry I'm so tired now.

I really mean it, I am going to crash now. Good night, all.

Phillies, stop playing stupid and beat up on the bullpen at least.

And send someone to the kitchen to bake some hashish-laced brownies for C.C. for tomorrow. Just as a little “good luck in your next World Series start!” present from a “friend.” :)

you too

Here’s hoping for a big comeback in the second half of the game. (It’s 11:00 at night and the game is only half over? Good lord.)

Hey, 2008Philz, if you're still here

You’ll be happy to know that I WILL be rooting for the Phillies a little bit next year, because your guys will be playing some of our division rivals in Interleague play (including the Twins) and they won’t be playing the Tigers. So I’m sure that everyone at BYB will appreciate the help when the time comes.

Well, we play the Mets and Braves

We shall do our best (we also play the Nationals, but I imagine you’re not too worried about them)

Who's the bigger Tigers rival?

Is it Twins or White Sox, or Indians? (I’ll assume it’s not KC)

by 2008Philz on Oct 31, 2009 11:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd say Sox.

Others may disagree though.

by StringTheory on Oct 31, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably whichever team is doing the best at the time

The White Sox draw the most ire usually, though. Personally, I hate the Indians, but most people around here hate the Sox.

I'm in Toledo

There’s about an even mix of Tigers fans and Indians fans around here. Cleveland is about an hour and a half way. Detroit’s about an hour away.

Durbin

did a good job against Manny in the NLCS.

Unfortunately :-p

(It’s kind of the opposite situation there. I like the Dodgers, but I don’t like Manny)

Okay, I'm back.

Let’s think ahead.

Holliday to Yanks to replace Damon (this offseason).

Mauer to Yanks to replace Posada (next offseason)

Why are all the other teams still playing?

by rook34 on Oct 31, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Because you still have to play the games

A la 2008. Though I suppose it would be important for the Tigers to sign Verlander long-term just to delay the Yankees trying to go after, cuz you know they will (I have a horrible track record with this. My favorite Tigers keep ending up with the Yankees).

They have to put in a salary cap at some point.

It’s disgusting. Here’s next year’s Yankee Lineup

Jeter SS
Cano 2B
Texieria 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Holliday LF
Posada C
Matsui/Next Ridiculous Free Agent Signing DH
Swisher/Next Ridiculous FA Signing RF
Cabrera CF

Come on. And I haven’t even gotten to the pitching staff.

I'm a broken record, I know.

But the gluttony is just awful. They’ll probably sign Jason Bay just to piss off the Red Sox. Plug him in RF.

Well, that should do it -

Have a good night all! Hopefully I won’t be writing on monday with the Phils down 3-1, but CC scares me.

Very true

Or “Miguel Cabrera hit that ball a long way” or something to that effect. Though knowing McCarver, he’d figure out some way to complain about it.

There you go

Or if Verlander struck someone out, he’d say that Sabathia would’ve fooled the batter more.
