Tigers Win! Game 162 Afterglow

At the very least, there will be bonus baseball Tuesday evening at the Metrodome.

The Detroit Tigers won the game they had to win, with Justin Verlander pitching the game his team desperately needed.  For seven innings, he allowed only two hits and no runs.

And somebody in the Detroit dugout brought his bat to the ballpark today.  Namely, Ryan Raburn, who blasted two home runs as part of a 3-for-4 day.  Magglio Ordonez was perfect at the plate, batting 4-for-4, highlighted by a solo homer.

Tigers beat the White Sox, 5-3!  Full recap to come.  But for now, enjoy the afterglow.

(And check in on that Twins-Royals game, though Minnesota currently leads 7-1.)

like Laird's attitude

Wouldn’t have it any other way if they have to go to Minnesota and earn the division with a win.

Thinks Porcello it absolutely ready – he’s improved all year long and he can’t wait to catch him.

Leyland on Porcello

Expects him to pitch well – knows he certainly won’t be scared to pitch a big game.

Thinks it will be a tremendous experience for him to pitch in such an environment.

Doesn’t think Porcello is all that smart because he wanted to pitch out of the bullpen the last two days :) and Verlander wanted to come in on three days, but “these are two golden arms, for a long time, and this manager was not going to have that on his conscience.”

If Dusty Baker had that attitude, Prior would still be pitching. Grrrrrrr…..

three days rest for Verlander

Doesn’t surprise me. Competitive athletes don’t think all that far ahead when the team needs them – the coaches and managers and trainers have to be responsible for reining them in.

Happy to be alive since it was a do or die situation.

Wasn’t tired in the eighth inning, they just hit a few in the right spots.

Was watching on television and saw Curtis sprinting, and was thinking “oh gosh, oh gosh, oh gosh” and then say him catch it.

Was edgy a little bit before the game, but he is before every game. Doesn’t change his routine just because it’s a must-win game.

I’m 3-0 for games at Comerica (and 4-0 for games at the Big House). Now if only I could go to Minnesota…

But seriously, great game. Justin was amazing for the first 7. Before the 8th sort of fell apart I wanted him to go the distance. When Raburn came out to LF after his 2nd homer the crowed over there cheered for him and chanted “RA-BURN! RA-BURN!” So happy for Maggs. And that catch of Curtis’s was truly spectacular. Minnesota, here we come.

Hmmm...

Even though they only scored one run off Baker last time they saw him, they DID have decent at-bats. They worked the count, saw a lot of pitches, and got the pitch count up. They just didn’t get rewarded for that.

I guess we’ll find out just how much of a big game pitcher Scott Baker is. And Rick Porcello, for that matter.

Doesn’t hurt either that Porcello will be on extra rest and Baker will be on short. His numbers are good against the Twins barring Kubel and Young. I feel we have just as good of a chance as Minnesota on Tuesday.

by Kmann on Oct 4, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean Tuesday, right? Farve has the Metrodome booked on Monday night.

And Leyland figures that Porcello is ready. Was asked about it specifically in the postgame, and told them he expects Porcello to pitch well because he is a good pitcher, and knows that for sure he won’t be scared. Kid is fearless – although he says he doesn’t think he’s all that smart, because he had been bugging Leyland to pitch out of the bullpen or something for the last two days, and Verlander wanted to go on short rest, but he wouldn’t let them.

After watching Baker overwork Mark Prior until that magnificent arm fell off, hearing Leyland say that there was no way he was going to have overworking either of those two “young golden arms” on his conscience was wonderful to hear.

Porcello might be so hopped up on adrenaline that he get a little out of control, but he won’t shrink from the challenge.

The only time I’ve seen him hopped up was his takedown of Youk.

It might be just something embarassing but not unlawful or something

Like if he got drunk and fell over furniture there isn’t anything particularly bad about it, but it’s just an embarrassing and personal story. It might just be something he wants to keep private because it isn’t really anyone else’s business.

likely would have surfaced by now, unless it was domestic. I don’t know whether or not Miggy is married.

by rook34 on Oct 4, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

that's why I think it's just embarassing

I never like it when people pry into a public figure’s private life, unless it has to do with their job or it is illegal. If a religious figure has an affair, for example, it is important because they talk about and are expected to set a good example of how to live a moral life as part of their position within the community. If an athlete or an actor or someone has an extramarital affair, it doesn’t have anything to do with their job and (provided there is no workplace harrassment or issues of sexual assault or someone is underage, for example) shouldn’t be anyone’s business other than the spouse.

But I’m not a very nosy person, so I guess I’m a little abnormal that way.

I agree with Kurt's take...

the less I know, the better. Most of these guys would probably be harder to root for if we knew everything that they did in their personal lives. Of course, that’s the same with most people anyway.

by rook34 on Oct 4, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

my feelings too

I don’t care about the personal lives of my coworkers and colleagues, I don’t care about the details of the personal lives of several of my family members even, I just am not interested in the personal lives of the people who entertain me. People are all flawed and they can be decent human beings while falling far short of perfection.

I want them to work hard at their jobs and stay out of jail so they can continue being entertaining. I want them to avoid getting hooked on anything – drugs, alcohol, gambling, whatever – because I don’t wish that kind of hell on anyone. Besides that, how they choose to organize their personal lives is their business. I don’t want anyone else telling me what to do, so I’m not going to tell anyone else how to live, either.

look at that mop of hair!

What a cutie. :)

And you certainly have no dispute here about keeping out of people’s personal business. Heck, at least 95% of the people I know have quite enough trouble keeping track of their own lives, let alone trying to keep track of someone elses!

I do like seeing pictures of athlete’s families, though, because the kids are always so darn cute. And it’s fun to watch them grow up if an athlete stays somewhere for a while.

I know after the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup a couple years ago, I saw some pictures of Pavel Datsyuk and his daughter with the Cup, and I was amazed to see how big she has gotten because I remember that she was born when he was negotiating his last contract, and it’s easy to forget how long a player has been around until you sit back and count up the years. She’s adorable, too.

It’s less work to talk about a group of hockey players getting drunk at a bachelor party and hollering at cars along a rural road than to actually delve into statistics and stuff. I think that sometimes msm reporters can be bored and lazy with the new statistical analysis that some of the bloggers are coming up with. Especially the older ones. In any industry, there is an anxiety about being out of date and passed by, and sportswriting I’m sure is no different.

The media is a terrible animal

It’s almost as if the majority of the population thrives on the misfortunes of others, especially those who live in the limelight. I remember a couple of years ago Maggs used to talk to the media a lot post game. Now he rarley says anything. I don’t blame him. I remember one game a couple of months ago they said they “coming up next, Magglio comments about the game.” I think it was Laird they ended up talking with. Good for him & for Biggy. Private lives mean just that….private.

Also, I have seen some youtube footage from when Biggy was a boy in little league. He comes from a humble background and he is surrounded by friends and he’s holding his little sister. He is by no means arrogant. I think he’s probably fun loving and a good natured person

Maggs took a lot of crap from a lot of people...

this year, from the stuff with Chavez at the World Baseball Classic to the contract to his wife’s illness. I read that he threw a bunch of the front pages from the Free Press (highlighting his failed sliding catch last night) into the garbage before the game today. He’s probably had about enough of the press for quite awhile.

He is not a bad guy. Anyone who donates money like he does, for the kids in my neighborhood is alright with me. He will get no mention though on going 4-4 today and ending the regular season with a .309 BA. Trust me.

I've seen that Youtube video you're talking about

It’s amazing how much Miggy looks almost exactly the same nowadays. He never lost the babyface. And from what we’ve seen, he’s a total goofball, and I love it (that picture that Alli got of him before the Anaheim game was classic). I hope that never changes.

And with the media, it goes back to something I alluded to earlier but probably didn’t explain very well. If they ask you about something, you’re expected to spill all the details or you “must” be hiding something awful. As a result, a lot of guys end up divulging information they’d rather not, purely out of self-defense.

That’s why I never blame an athlete for not talking to the press a lot. I hear a lot of that about hockey players and how hockey isn’t bigger in the US because so many of those strange foreigners don’t even speak English. I’ve heard several interviews with Pavel Datsyuk, both in English and translated from Russian, and the man is hilariously funny. The problem is that if someone is speaking to him in English they just need to be patient and let him find the words, and I don’t think very many reporters have the time for that. Their loss. Any Red Wings fan knows how special he is and if he never talks to a reporter again his hockey stick speaks well enough for most of us. :)

I can’t even imagine dealing with the stalkers and other problems that professional athletes need to cope with.

There was an article I was reading, I think in the New York Times, about big-time college quarterbacks and how they can’t just go out on a date like any other college kid would, because the pictures and stuff would be all over the internet. One of them said that he had to be incredibly quick to move out of pictures because so often a girl would want a picture with him, and just before her friend (or even her mom!) would snap the picture, she would try to whip off her shirt.

What a bunch of bullshit they have to put up with. I’m so glad I’m not famous.

Being an athlete in the age of Twitter

and camera phones must be nearly impossible. Daysyuk’s teammates seem to love him, as do Magglio’s. That’s probably as good a barometer as anything.

by rook34 on Oct 4, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

oh, Datsyuk is awesome

The fans who know anything about hockey appreciate him, too. Even when he isn’t scoring he plays so well defensively and is such a good hitter. So much fun to watch with the puck.

I feel worse for individual athletes. At least with a team, a player has a family who knows what he is going through and understands the pressure and problems. An individual athlete doesn’t have the same ready access to a support system.

here is the article on college quarterbacks

From the New York Times, here. I can’t even imagine s young man that age under that level of scrutiny. Young people are silly and do stupid things, and always have. It’s just too bad that so many youngsters aren’t going to have the same ability to let stupid college stunts fade into the background like they used to. Poor kids.

It's kind of like that Michael Phelps incident

The one where pictures surfaced of him smoking a bong. The press acted like it was something morally reprehensible. I never thought that way. Yes, it was a dumb thing to do, but he’s young, he never really got to be a normal teenager or college student, and most people his age are bound to do dumb things from time to time. It doesn’t make me like him any less.

http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com

by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 4, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

I wonder what some of these reporters would have documented in their past if cell phone cameras existed back then? Just leave the kids alone and roll your eyes at the stupidity and wait for them to grow out of it as most do.

And yet with those who are older and should know better, things like messing around with guns or driving drunk get dismissed, while focusing on young antics that don’t run a risk of killing anyone else. I wonder if some reporters are worried about ticking off the athletes so they won’t talk to them anymore but they don’t worry about being frozen out by the younger athletes without as much money or reputation yet.

with the Mets around

There is no “worst choke in history” without their collapses. And I would put the postseason of the Cubs way ahead of this, too. And what about a team having a 3-0 series lead and giving it all up to the Red Sox?

There are much worse collapses when someone thinks about it for a second or two.

Thanks for the excellent examples.

We just had another patented offensive meltdown at the wrong time. Peavy had a lot to do with it. I won’t give us a pass for not hitting Freddy.

They came in today and did themselves proud. Good all-around performance.

We do that Tuesday and I’ll be able to live with the result either way.

by rook34 on Oct 4, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

sports in general and baseball in particular is full of examples of choking

Because people are human and sometimes crack under pressure. I’ve seen stories about tennis players who all of a sudden couldn’t return a ball, golfers who suddenly played like crap on the verge of a sure victory, and all kinds of teams that were the heavily favored winner but the pressure got to them, they were tight and nervous, and couldn’t manage to finish. It’s why everyone talks about how the last game of a series is hardest to win – logically it should be the easiest, because you already beat a team several times to get to that point, but human emotions and aspirations aren’t logical.

It’s what makes people such strange animals.

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero

by Baroque on Oct 4, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don't think this is anything out of the ordinary for this team.

We had a three day span of not scoring runs. That’s happened many times this year. We had one, aided by the presence of Jake Peavy, at the worst possible time.

The Twins took care of the Royals. We did not.

by rook34 on Oct 4, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

yup

Sometimes the idea of “choking” is just the result of such a streak coming at a highly visible time.

Now if the Tigers had an offense that was so prolific there was no need for frequent laments about squandering opportunites, it would be more unusual to be nearly shut out in three straight games. The team squandered so much that there is a t-shirt lamenting it! :D

In the top 9th inning

on Friday night Ozzie Guillen was in the dugout heckling our position players, sticking his tongue out at them and so forth, he was also doing that to our runners in the bottom of the 9th. ( Meaning Magglio)

Then on Saturday, Biggy shows up bruised, not starting any rumors, just sayin’.

Ozzie is something of a jackass.

The stories of him being a jackass around Chicago are legion. He’s fully capable of being friendly and big-hearted too, but his mouth gets him into trouble. If he weren’t so charismatic and generally likable, someone would have closed out his dance card a long time ago.

There are people I have known who were jackasses but still professional, though. He just has really poor impulse control, it seems.

Well, if it manifests itself in general mouthiness and cussing, that’s better than smacking around people or domestic animals. Just annoying.

But he’s done for the season and the Tigs have (at least) one more game to prepare for, so magnanimity comes easy. :)

sometimes people combine things, though

Years and years ago, when I was living in the Baltimore area, the Baltimore Museum of Art had an exhibit on voodoun – not the goofball Hollywood version, but the real thing – and I wish I could have spent more time with the exhibit (long story) because the accoutrements were amazing. Gorgeous hand-embroidered flags and garments, all covered with sequins and metallic threads. One entire segment was about how when Catholicism came into the area the people didn’t switch from their old ways, but blended the two faiths together and elements of Catholic imagery began to appear in the voodoun items and other names appeared in the ceremonies and invocations.

Really, really fascinating stuff – and beautifully intricate artwork, too.

to me that is the most interesting aspect of religion

How people are so adaptable in taking what makes sense to them and incorporating into their existing world view. For all the talk from some religious leaders about how rigid and inflexible their rules are, when people actually put the principles into practice it is much more flexible and therefore more interesting. And I enjoy seeing the worksmanship that people put into an art object that is intended to serve a religious purpose – stained glass windows, tile patterns in a mosque, embroidery on religious vestments – whatever. There is such a care and love that comes through even if a person doesn’t follow the religion at all. Such a very human quality – more defining of the species than tool-making I think.

I just have to give Santeria credit for such a cool term for the high priest

I was flipping through a book on the history of the Papacy for some reason once, and there was a list of all the popes in the back with their actual given names as well as their pope names.

If they stuck with the names they were born with, the Catholic church could have had a Pope Bruno and a Pope Guido in it’s history. How cool would that be!

Got rid of him because the group was in a tight spot and while he was off being his loner self the rest of the group made a side deal to sacrifice him for the greater good of the group. :)
