Heartbreak in Two-and-a-Half Minutes

Maybe no one wants to relive the highlights of last night's game so soon.  Or perhaps you already saw plenty last night, and need to watch something else.

But while I'm staring at this computer, figuring out just what to write, here's the SportsCenter look at the AL Central tiebreaker between the Tigers and Twins.

Maybe you can take solace at Neil Everett accidentally saying, "The Tigers win, 6-5" at the 1:33 mark, and pretend for a few seconds.

Two-and-a-half minutes of highlights don't nearly sum up what happened last night.

Well I've had a chance to sleep some of it off

I watched the ESPN replay this morning too and it brought all the emotion running back through me. The extreme highs of watching Porcello own the Twins, the Cabrera and Ordonez HRs, the Tigers going up in extra innings…and the lows of watching the Twins plink their way back to tie it up, watching Raburn slide past that fly ball, and the inevitable ending of watching them run on to the field.

Unlike having to TV with two seconds to go so I wouldn’t have to watch the Penguins celebrate their Stanley Cup, I made myself watch the celebration.

I know it doesn’t do anything for the team, but it put into perspective just how wound up I’d gotten the past few weeks watching the end of the season…and also knowing full well I’d do it all over again.

Think about how long we as Tigers fans have struggled alongside our team. Yeah I’ve been a Tigers fan since I was a kid watching them celebrate a World Series victory. Even through the leaner years of…well ALL of the 90s and through the 119 loss season watching Maroth eat 21 of them. Yes I’d wear my hat around the house on days I knew they were playing…but that was it.

Then along came 2006 and the firestorm that was the Detroit Tigers and so many of us were able to come out of the closet. Yeah, I said it. Tell me I’m wrong. But since then I’ve been able to wear that sweaty ol nasty Tigers hat in PUBLIC for THREE years and not get laughed at…well…too much.

This was a good year for the Tigers. Think about all the younger guys who were able to step up and contribute; giving us all hope for a good season next year even with the possibility of a few of our veterans not being there. Hmm…sounds like another Mike Illitch project doesn’t it?

So lets tip our hats and applaud our boys for a hell of a ride.

no matter what we feel, say, do....

last nights game was absolutely amazing to watch. A true battle that shall be remembered by both clubs for a long time.

I hate baseball highlights.

Not nearly long or good enough.

Why waste time on baseball?

There’s football to recap and at least ten minutes to devote to discussing each game. Not to mention the obligatory daily Brett Favre lovefest.

Don't even talk...

Baseball doesn’t nearly get shunned as much as Hockey does…

ESPN is lucky to recap one game every night. Not to mention it’s almost always a Chicago, Pittsburgh or Washington game.

I simply had to leave last night.

I turned the TV off as soon as Gomez crossed the plate, and I went and bought some needed items at a 24-hour store, and stayed at a friend’s house who has no interest in baseball. I made the necessary plans beforehand in case we did lose.

Oh well. I’ll come home from class today and root for the Yankees. There’s no AL Central feeling of comradery here.

I wish KC was good this year...

They are the one team out of the AL Central (besides the Tigers) that I’d root for in the playoffs.

I almost hate to say it, but I'm rooting for the Twins now.

My five least favorite teams in baseball are:

1. ChiSox
2. Yankees
3. Red Sox
4. Indians
5. Angels

Perhaps I’m alone in this, but I have a lot of respect for the Twins and the way they play the game. I’ll never forgive them for beating us this season, but I love a good underdog, and I’d rather they won than any of the other AL teams in the playoffs.

My prioritization:

National League:
Dodgers>Cardinals>Rockies>Phillies

American League:
Yankees>Angels>Twins>Red Sox

World Series:
Dodgers>Yankees
Yankees=Cardinals (It’s a draw; I don’t care)
Yankess>Rockies/Phillies
Dodgers/Cardinals/Rockies>Angels/Twins/Red Sox
Angels>Phillies
Phillies>Twins/Red Sox

I’ve never particularly disliked the Yankees (mostly cuz I like the city of New York), and my source of knowledge for all things baseball is a Yankees fan. He and I promised each other that’d we’d root for each other’s team should “our” team be eliminated at any point prior to or during the postseason.

I just don't know much about the Dodgers.

I like Ubaldo Jimenez and Huston Street, so I’m going with the Rockies. And, as long as the Red Sox and Twins dont’ make it, I’ll be pleased.

i respect some of the individual players....

Mauer, Morneau, Nathan, and many of the others past and present. I do not respect their reliance on the hellhole, a place that should never have been approved for major league baseball. Give them credit, they beat us in an elimination game at our place too. But I am looking very forward to them hosting us in a place without turf ground ball hits, a gray teflon roof that leaks, and all the other nonsense that comes with the hellhole.

we don't hate OC at the moment

But generally, Punto, OC, and all the other “scrappy” players who can’t hit aren’t well liked by Twins fans. OC has more fans because he had a hot first couple weeks with the Twins, but he’s been mediocre since then.

My feelings

AL: Yankees < Red Sox < Twins < Angels
NL: Cardinals < Dodgers/Phillies < Rockies

Fuck the Yankees, and to a lesser extent fuck the Red Sox. I’m still bitter toward the Twins. Default AL is Angels. I don’t want the AAAA league to win, so… go Angels.

I'm glad someone else caught this

But these weren’t the 11 o clock highlights…which means he said it TWICE!

Also, during the 11 o’clock highlights he also called Miner, “Verlander” on the bench (and followed it up with “I believe” instead of just correcting himself, and completely butchered the highlights the entire time. SC also failed to show the HBP on Inge (saving Randy Marsh?).

And I agree completely, they spent about 3 minutes on this game. Makes me feel good because we lost, but definitely not enough time for this classic.

I'm actually rooting for the Twins today

Not a yankees fan. And should Boston and Minnesota advance to the ALCS, I’ll be rooting for the Twinkies again.

And if it happens to be a Dodgers-Twins World Series….

Any other National League team vs the Twins, and I’ll probably jump on their bandwagon for the WS. But then again, if they’ve made it that far…I might just want them to go all the way, so as to be able to say that the Tigers lost to a team of destiny, or something.

But I’m expecting them to go out 3-1 to the Yankees.

I can't even really think about it right now

Let alone what is going to happen in the offseason. Plenty of time later to pick over the bones of the corpse and decide what to discard. :(

glad I have a lot of stuff to do tonight

I don’t think I’m ready to watch the playoffs yet, though I know I will before too long.

how can I be expected to work today? ugh

Just heard Rick Knapp on XM radio

He said “We fell short of our goal, but we exceeded our expectations.”

I wish I could come up with something profound – but I just feel empty. Empty and drained.

Whew

I hope “my favorite baseball team just lost in extra innings and I’m shellshocked” is an excuse to get out of class today- I’m skipping two to do the studying I should have done last night….

I wish that was a valid excuse to call off work

In class, at least I have the option of just sitting there and staring off into space. I can’t do that at work.
