2009 Memories
Yes, it still hurts right now. I myself still feel a little empty and hollow, like something was taken from me. But this team surpassed the expectations nearly all the so-called "experts" set for them. Let's not forget that. So I set up this post as a way for all of us to look back at this thrill ride that was the 2009 season. You may not be in the mood right now. That's fine. I totally understand. But once time passes, and you're ready, I hope you'll join me in reminiscing.
So, basically, I'd like to ask: What memories will you have of the 2009 season (obviously not including how it ended)? They may be good or bad, something that everyone will immediately recognize or something that you personally found amusing or touching. Perhaps you even remember a particular inside joke or Game Thread here on BYB. This is what I'll remember:
1. Miguel Cabrera's grand slam and Armando Galarraga's gem during the home opener (yes, you guys know I have a soft spot for Galarraga).
2. Justin Verlander finding his form in late April against the Yankees (and my soft spot for Galarraga is NOTHING compared to how I feel about Verlander).
3. The Rodneycoaster.
4. Squirrels and Megan Fox and ice cream and vegetables, oh my!
5. The summer of the JV/EJ 1-2 combo.
6. Justin Verlander's 1-0 gem in Cleveland, including Granderson's amazing catch (This'll probably go down as my favorite game of the season).
7. Brandon Inge's amazing first half, culminating in an All-Star appearance (thanks to those of us who spent hours voting for him).
8. Rick Porcello hitting two RBI singles in a game against the Pirates during Interleague play.
9. Gerald Laird and that gun of an arm that he possesses.
10. August 15th: I only get to go to one game a year, and this happened to be that one game. It was a 10-3 win over the Royals, but because I was there, it'll be a big memory for me. If you're interested in seeing this game from my vantage point, here's my Flickr album (They're nowhere near as good as Alli's photos, though).
And I'll end with one of those photos. It's one of Cabrera, and it's the best photo I got that night. By the way, I seem to have good luck with Miguel Cabrera and home runs. In the two games I've been to since Miggy joined the Tigers, he hit three home runs.

So...what will you remember?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff. However, it does reflect the views of this particular fan, which is as important as anything else written here at BYB.

Great memories, all
For me, Curtis Granderson’s catch in Cleveland is one, especially with the Cleveland announcers’ call (“It’s gone!……….No it’s not”.) Still makes me laugh.
Aubrey Huff’s batflip.
Raburn’s walkoff homer
Maggs’ hair today, gone tomorrow.

A few not already mentioned:
- The 8th inning comeback against Seattle’s Lowe (one of the two games I got to attend).
- Santiago’s home-run over triple’s alley. Sneaky power.
- Inge’s 9th inning 2-run HR against Valverde and grand slam in Tampa.
- Edwin Jackson blowing away the Angels in the 9th inning for a CG.
- Adam Everett’s grand slam.

My favorite has to be the Granderson catch.
However, I only made it to two games this year and both were pretty freakin’ awesome.
First game – Jackson’s complete game 2-1 Victory over the Angels – http://espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=290606106
Second game – July 25th, White Sox. Granderson tied the game in the bottom of the 9th with a double, and then we walked it off in the 10th – http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=290725106
Sigh. I’m getting upset thinking about all the good games now.

Thank you
Trust me… I get this a lot- I’m a baseball stat geek on the debate team who doesn’t party in college. It’s grown to be a complement. :)

the memory that first comes to mind for me
was when I was at the game Aug 24th in Anaheim and miggy hit a home run… my section was packed with tigers fans and we all leaped to our feet, and the guy in front of me turned around and yelled “MIGGY’S A BIG BOI!”. it was like I never left the forum! haha.

Oh how could I forget
the August 6 game when Avila got his first major league hit. His mom couldn’t watch beacuse she was so nervous. All those shots of his dad up in the box getting congratulated afterwards. And it was Porcello’s tenth win, that day, too.
Ah man — I’m getting emotional here again.

Oh, a few...
1. The last win at the Cell against the White Sox. I was there and it really felt like we were going to make it. Great to see so many Tiger fans, too.
2. May 11, my bachelor party at Comerica. Kid Rick was brilliant against the A’s, and Maggs had one of his buggy-whip doubles.
3. Fenway Park, first game. We got behind and still eventually lost, but we pulled even with a great comeback anyway.
4. JV’s ace performances against Boston, Minnesota, and the White Sox that kept the season from going off the rails.

That last series at The Cell really was something else
It felt amazing, something we haven’t felt there in a very long time.

My favorites.
1. Grandy’s catch and that moron announcer. That was hilarious.
2. Verlander not only finding himself again, but coming back even better. Can you say strikeout king?
3. Porcello proving rookie isn’t always an epithet.
4. Not only defying the “experts” by not finishing last, but actually being the team to beat in the Central.
5. Making Minnesota work for it in game 163.

I just thought of a BYB Game Thread memory
It was a game against Cleveland at Progressive Field late in the year. The Tigers were seriously blowing out the Indians by a huge margin and as they headed into the late innings, Cleveland kept bringing in bench players that none of us had ever heard of. Ian commented, “Raise your hand if you’re a defensive replacement for the Indians next inning.” Someone volunteered to play right field, and after that I think we fielded an entire team of BYBers to go out and play the ninth inning for Cleveland (I was the catcher).

My favorite moment: Magglio's game tying home run in game 163.
That brought up the ghosts of 2006 something fierce. I was jumping up and down for a good two minutes.

May 2nd
I bought a BigMig shirt before the game, held it up when he was coming up to bat, and got the nod from Miguel Cabrera. Still makes my face light up like a Christmas tree to think about it.

Game 163
In 1967 I remember listening to the games on the radio with my Dad and saw how heart broken he was when Dick Mc Aulife bounced into the season ending double plays. I had always enjoyed listening with my Dad, usually in our breezeway on a summer evening, when the game wasn’t on TV. My Dad died in 1986 and many of my fondest memories of him involved Tiger Baseball.
Flash forward to game 163 this year. My wife went to bed because she HATES the drama of lose and go home and as much as she loves the game she always hides.
But for the last 7 innings I had BOTH my 18 year old Daughter and my 23 year old Son in the family room watching every pitch and sitting on the edge of our seats. Sharing that couple of hours of Tiger Baseball with them, disappointing as it was, has now become not only my favorite moment of the 09 season, but a favorite of all time.
Baseball is so special because it involves generations. Just as I remember rooting for Bill Freehan and Mickey Loich in the sixties with my father, he probably remembered rooting for Hank Greenberg and Schoolboy Rowe with HIS Dad.
And some day in the future Vince and Stephanie will root for some now unknown player, and remember fondly the night the Tigers blew it in 09, and how they watched it with their Dad.
My favorite memory – Game 163
