MLB Playoffs Open Thread
I underestimated the desire for playoff chatter yesterday (though I really didn't keep up on things as I crashed once I got home), so we'll have an open thread for the three games today.
If you guys want to do this throughout the postseason, BYB shall accommodate you. And we can make the threads more game-specific as the playoff field gets pared down.
On the schedule today, all times EST:
Game 2 Phillies-Rockies @ 2:37 p.m.

I just can't "not watch" baseball when it's on my tv.
I’m here and watching the Phillies/Rockies game, although it’s the series I care the least about.
Same here, though I'm more likely to watch this than Yankees-Twins
And I like Carlos Gonzalez. I don’t know why.

Thanks for the Open Thread
It’ll provide me another distraction from Kinetics homework/studying for tomorrow’s Med Chem exam.
Good luck on the Med Chem stuff
That’s a giant pain, so I’ve heard.

o hai
I have the current game on, but not watching it that closely. cliffy and chasee utley – surprise – are the only phillies I care about, and I know nada about the rockies.
The only Rockie that I care about is Carlos Gonzalez and I really don't know much about him
(Except that he’s an outfielder, bats and throws left-handed, and was one of the key pieces when Matt Holliday was traded to Oakland).

Hey...
Is there an easy way to look through archived Game Threads? They don’t show up on the Archives page and I’m trying to reminisce and figure out what I said in my first game here on BYB.
open one up
a starter thread, as in not an overflow – and go to the very bottom of the page. there’ll be a “game threads” link
Ah...my first ever comment on BYB was a complaint that the Tigers didn't play good defense behind Justin Verlander
You guys weren’t very nice to him (I don’t suppose I can blame you, though). I wasn’t very nice to Raburn (that was that game against the Angels where he made awful play after awful play in the outfield). But Ian was nice to me.

haha.
the first time I participated in a game thread was a losing day game in june or july and JV pitched… I can’t remember who it was against, though. maybe the A’s.
The Tigers won my first game, but not until after I went to bed
And that was the last game Verlander pitched before he evolved into K Machine.

Oh, God, I just saw the dumbest blood donation PSA ever
And apparently my local CW affiliate is hosting a “Vampire-themed blood drive”
Normally I just ignore baseball after my team is knocked out.
But with other people to commisserate with, the pain is much less. It’s like therapy.
Although I just can’t watch the Twins Yankees – too painful. :(
I’ll be rooting for Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers tonight.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
me too!
I have a friend coming in from out of town, but she’ll probably be tired and let me have baseball on while we chat and have a drink… right?
High socks are one thing...
But are you really supposed to roll the pantleg up ABOVE the knee? Looks weird.
the centerfield cam online
is following the phanatic dancing along the dugout roof. kind of hilarious. also stupid. haha
It's the AAAA league
They’re still not entirely sure what this “baseball” thing is.
2100 Woodward and Twitter
They never score any runs for Clayton. :(
I love his scruffy “beard” though – it doesn’t make him look any older at all. :D

I swear that Albert Pujols has been walked intentionally just about every time he's come to the plate in this series
Go Dodgers
It's strange to come home from my 5:30-7 class
and not immediately turn on FSD. :(
I never got to make my profound and heartfelt comments before because I was too distraught, so I guess I’ll make them here and now, even if they are a little late.
Ian, thank you so much for doing the great job you do with the site. I’m really grateful to have found BYB during a time when baseball was the centerpiece of my life and had no one to talk to about it apart from my parents. Thanks to all of you as well, I’ve really enjoyed spending this season (well, from about July when I got here until now) with all of you and I’m sure next year will be even better.
As for the boys, I still love them and I am still proud of them. Yes, I’m also still upset and nowhere near over it (I probably will remain upset until I don’t have to hear about the Twins anymore this year), but bottom line, they gave us a great season and some wonderful memories. I look forward to what next year will bring.
P.S. Go Angels.
expect me to tune in when the Yankees are about the bounce the Twins from the playoffs

Do you think Rodney will still be on the mound at the Metrodome when the Yankees and Twins return?
I've finally gotten around to playing with the postseason.tv controls

I got excited when I realized I didn't have to hate Jim Thome anymore
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 8, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I heard a story somewhere (and this could be a well-known story for all I know and if that's the case, I'll sound like an idiot)
That the Tigers were playing a series against the White Sox, and Justin Verlander asked Jim Thome to autograph a bat for him. Thome (who has hit 7 home runs against JV) nicely obliged, signed it and wrote “To Justin. Thanks for all your help.” That made me laugh.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 8, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Mike Illitch may sign the checks
but Jim Thome owns Justin Verlander. Glad to see him in the NL West. Good guy, but dang was he a Fearless Tiger Killer.
That's funny
My brother once caught two BP homeruns hit by Thome in a span of about 5 pitches. It was insane, Thome hit the same spot twice.
Turning negative to positive here...
but with the Tigers season over their gear will be going on sale very soon. Combine that with my employee discount at Meijer, I will be sporting more Tigers gear soon enough.
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
See?
There’s a positive in everything! I also bet you could get a great discount on a 2009 AL Central Champs t-shirt. OK, that wasn’t funny.
I saw a blurb on ESPN about shirts like those
When New England lost the Super Bowl to the Giants, the shirts were sent to third world countries for kids and stuff.
No doubt some were on hand in Minnesota and in backrooms of stores everywhere. We should blanket third world countries with Tiger fans, and no doubt someone would probably get their hands on a case.
I had that thought as I walked through Meijer...
looking for certain parts to make a “launcher of combustible materials.”
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
That's how I ended up with bobbleheads of Verlander and Pudge
They were selling them for 50% off at Kroger (where I work) after the 2007 season ended. Those bobbleheads are still somewhere in the depths of my car, by the way. Damn, I should’ve gone to the mall and perused Dick’s Sporting Goods today. I’m STILL in search of that elusive Verlander t-shirt…

Here's the Shyster link
although, I guess it’s not technically Shysterball since it’s from his NBC gig.
holy cow that's bad
He’s such a good hitter I just figured he would be good in the playoffs, too.

Who is your most hated player in the bigs?
Kevin Youklis. Hated him before Ricky the Kidd tossed his ass to the ground, and that was just too sweet for me.
2100 Woodward and Twitter
tough
A-Rod, just because he comes across as such a phoney. Kevin Youklis. Barry Bonds because he acted as though it was far too much effort to bother being civil to people, and was always such a surly ass toward everyone.
Crede and Cuddyer and Thome because they kill us.
AJ (of course). And also Nick Punto.
I guess AJ has to be number one.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I really don't know...
but you can pretty much include everyone on the Yankee’s, Bosox, and Indians.
As long as Jeter wheres those damn pin stripes I will hate him. And since he’ll probably retire in them I will always hate him. Goes for every player on those teams who might be considered generally a “good guy.”

mine is their short stop...
I can’t even think of his name but my hate is completely irrational. I have no clue why I hate him but whenever I look at him I just get angry.

Uhhhhhhhh
Alexei? Is that their SS? I can’t remember.

Alexei Ramirez is so skeletal though!
I can’t stand to look at him. Why don’t they feed him?

built like a string bean
I hate anyone like that just on general principles. No one should have an easy time being that thin.

Hee hee
TrueBlue LA is starting to get overwhelmed by the influx of Tiger fans. One guy said he kinda felt bad for rooting for the Twins.
hee hee
We are visiting out of love. And a team that according to them (I didn’t pay too much attention to the pundits about the NL) wasn’t picked to do anything, despite an excellent record and very good pitching. Makes no sense to me.
But ESPN is stupid, so they have no need of sense.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
they are thrilled to be beating the Cardinals when a bunch of pundits were expecting them to not only lose but be swept
Which I do not get. They aren’t a crappy team. At least give them a CHANCE against the Cardinals or you are just going to look silly.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
They're an excellent team
who built up a big lead and pulled off the throttle. And Billigsley kinda imploded for a bit, Kuroda got hurt etc.
Apparently the ESPN "brain trust" decided the LA bullpen was a weakness.
But ESPN is so full of fail they would need an overflow of fail if they were a blog.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
No bullpen
featuring Jonathan Broxton’s fat ass is a weakness. That dude is everything I wish Joel Zumaya would be.
Seriously.
I see that friggin tank come up to the mound and dream of better days.

but jesus zoidberg will never be shrunk.
My Music: Some Sorta Giant
how do you shrink a picture?
I just look at the pixel dimensions and if it is big, I don’t use it.

Easy way is to upload to imageshack.us

you can do it within photobucket also...
it’s an option if you click on your own photo.

thx
I have an account, but haven’t had time to do much with it yet. I do need to get my vacation pictures from Sleeping Bear Dunes up so my friends can see the ghost forest and the dunes and Lake Michigan and stuff. Maybe this weekend (especially if it’s rainy) I’ll actually sit down and take care of it.

I was looking over my Flickr photostream for the game I went to this year
For some reason, every photo has a single digit number of views except for one photo of Edwin Jackson which has 29 views. I thought that was weird.

I know I was a repeat offender of posting images that were too large
That’s something I’m going to work on in the offseason. That and learn how to swing properly so I can play softball next summer.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 8, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions
I want to learn how to fill out a score card properly
My mom used to, because she was the oldest and would have to keep track of what happened at games so she could fill in her dad after he came back from a bathroom break.
I don’t know why, just a semi-useless skill that I think would be unusual to have.

too much multitasking
I’m already simultaneously watching the game, commenting on at least one blog (sometimes more) and sometimes trying to fold laundry or something at the same time. :)
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I taught myself how to keep score during the offseason last year
I just brought up archived games on MLB.tv and went at it. But it’s been so long that I’d have to almost re-teach myself.
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 8, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions
that's why I want to wait until the offseason
Right now I want to concentrate on the games, not how to record what happened.

I don't remember
I just remember that my subject line was something derogatory (and likely profane) about Gordon Beckham on a White Sox thread.
I remember posting an enormous picture of a waffle cone once
by SabreRoseTiger on Oct 8, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions
that was huge
And really, really delicious looking. I think it prompted about six people to run to the kitchen for ice cream immediately!

I also remember when someone went to post “and Rodney shuts them down!” but posted “and Rodney shits them down!” instead.
