World Series Game 4 Open Thread

After last night's 8-5 win in Game 3, the Yankees could take a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Phillies with a victory tonight.  Will Philadelphia regret not pitching Cliff Lee on short rest, as the Yanks are doing tonight with CC Sabathia?  Especially now that it appears that the Yankees' lineup may have revived itself?

Joe Blanton won a game for the Fightins in last year's World Series, allowing two runs and four hits, with seven strikeouts, in six innings.  But he's 0-3 with a 8.18 ERA in four career starts versus the Yankees.

Pinstripe Alley and The Good Phight are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

I find all those comparisons strange.

But the “sports = war” equivalence is just so overblown. Even if it’s some kind of fictional war.

And I still don’t have a really clear idea of what the movie is like, anyway – except that it is probably like every other similar movie with that kind of plot.

if cole hamels was on the white sox

ozzie would have beat the crap out of him over those comments he made about wishing the season could be over. (as he confirms on the show now)

which is exactly the kind of attitude

That got Ozzie’s team into the playoffs and playing in the World Series … oh, whoops.

“I can’t wait for it to end,” Hamels said, referring to his wildly inconsistent 2009 season. “It’s been mentally draining … It’s one of those things, a year in, you just can’t wait for a fresh start.”

so, I dunno. I can understand feeling like that but prob not a good idea to tell the media about it

that doesn't bother me either

It’s been a rough year for him, and he’s glad that whatever the end result it’s almost over and he can concentrate on coming back strong next year. I hear similar sentiments from a lot of professional athletes – heck, I’ve had semesters I thought the same about.

Is there someone out there who is on record saying he wants to be a Yankee but the Yankees would never want to sign?

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don't remember Sheffield saying he wanted to rejoin the Yankees, but I could've easily missed it

At any rate, what the Yankees do is not really my priority. My primary concern is the Tigers, and they play the Yankees 8 times at the most (7 times next year). Therefore, figuring out how to beat the AL Central should be the focus.

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, the last time the World Series went the way I wanted it to was 2002

I’m not counting 2005 (when I strictly went AL over NL, as neither the White Sox nor the Astros thrilled me) or 2003 (when I would’ve rooted for the Yankees at the time, but since then, there’s been a couple players from that Marlins team whom I’ve come to know and love; at the time I had no idea who any of them were).

And this is how “AL over NL” I’ve been in my life: 2007 was the first time I rooted for an NL team in the World Series.

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

you could argue that the $113 is better spent. They are in the same place with 1/2 the payroll.

by murrajo on Nov 1, 2009 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree somewhat.

That would be totally true had the Yanks not bought CC, Tex, and Burnett. Those 3 salaries make up a huge portion of the payroll gap.

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

The last time I saw, the Marlins were at $22 million, so they’ve gone up a bit. They’ll have to go up even higher if they want to sign Josh Johnson long-term like they did Hanley.

I don’t think that would be a good matchup for the Tigers, cuz you guys are heavy on the lefty power hitters and our pitching is mostly right-handed. Bad match.
