World Series Game 4 Open Thread
After last night's 8-5 win in Game 3, the Yankees could take a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Phillies with a victory tonight. Will Philadelphia regret not pitching Cliff Lee on short rest, as the Yanks are doing tonight with CC Sabathia? Especially now that it appears that the Yankees' lineup may have revived itself?
Joe Blanton won a game for the Fightins in last year's World Series, allowing two runs and four hits, with seven strikeouts, in six innings. But he's 0-3 with a 8.18 ERA in four career starts versus the Yankees.
Pinstripe Alley and The Good Phight are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

have not seen the movie
But it seems very emotionally overwrought and predictable.

I still like it
I could do without the whole romantic part of it, but the action sequences are really good.

I find all those comparisons strange.
But the “sports = war” equivalence is just so overblown. Even if it’s some kind of fictional war.
And I still don’t have a really clear idea of what the movie is like, anyway – except that it is probably like every other similar movie with that kind of plot.

if cole hamels was on the white sox
ozzie would have beat the crap out of him over those comments he made about wishing the season could be over. (as he confirms on the show now)
at least the other announcer called him out on trying to sound logical and reasonable
“if you put your sox on wrong you lose it”
which is exactly the kind of attitude
That got Ozzie’s team into the playoffs and playing in the World Series … oh, whoops.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
well, Cole can probably go back to baseball cap commercials now
I think his season is done no matter what
unless he wanted it to be over and already have won the World Series
So they could start on all the celebrating and stuff like last year.

quote
“I can’t wait for it to end,” Hamels said, referring to his wildly inconsistent 2009 season. “It’s been mentally draining … It’s one of those things, a year in, you just can’t wait for a fresh start.”
so, I dunno. I can understand feeling like that but prob not a good idea to tell the media about it
that doesn't bother me either
It’s been a rough year for him, and he’s glad that whatever the end result it’s almost over and he can concentrate on coming back strong next year. I hear similar sentiments from a lot of professional athletes – heck, I’ve had semesters I thought the same about.

Good evening
I just jerry-rigged a cable connection into my bedroom (by use of a splitter and an extra-long coaxial cable). Now I have to make sure not to trip over it.

Funny to hear “out of respect for our country” on the PA at the same time the Phanatic is on screen. :)
And this staff seargent has a wonderful voice.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
Yeah, she's really good
And I had the same thought about the Phanatic being in the background

she can sing
I’m pretty sure she sang God Bless America in a previous game (with prelude I’ve never heard before)
which accounts for the difficult melody
I wish it was as easy to sing as O, Canada.

I figure it's good enough that I know the words in English
After all, it is a foreign country and all.

or a lot of blood
My mom had to learn the lyrics to the Marseillais (sp) when she took the language in high school, and said it’s pretty violent and bloody. I just know the tune from the 1812 Overture.

I said Oh Canada was supposed to be sung partially in french. It goes English-French-English.

I haven't heard that everywhere, though.
In Montreal and Ottawa, but in Vancouver and both Alberta cities I’ve just heard in English. I can’t remember how they sing it in Toronto off hand (but I think there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth).

A-Rod taking a page out of Delmon Young's book
But at least Delmon Young wears pants that are the correct size
I don't know... A-rod was the hottest bat in NY till this series and they have hit him 3 times
that would make me suspicious
Can either of these left fielders throw?
Raburn would have gotten him at home.

But it wouldn’t be a true Yankee game without at least one interminable inning.

my brother figures
That instead of intentionally walking people, they should just plunk them in the butt. It would keep the pitch count down and reduce the chance of a wild pitch.

Ech
Every time I see Blanton, I think of the smudge on his hat, and the home run he hit in the World Series last year. And now that I know that home run was hit off Edwin Jackson…
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions
That still doesn't make Blanton a pleasant thought
And, oh yeah, watching him mow through the Rays last year wasn’t fun either
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions
So...why was everyone worried about Cliff Lee?
Blanton’s mowing, and there’s no way the Yankees hold the Phillies to one run.
Hahahahahaha
My baseball guru appreciates Posada’s offense, but he’s terrified of him being behind the plate. His motto is that “Your catcher is there for defense. Anything he gives you with the bat is gravy.”

the 2nd basemen don't have to hit the bag to turn a 2x play
so the runner should get that call (right)?
apparently when a double play is being turned the defender quite often doesn't touch the bag
he just stands over it and throws to 1st.
I just learned that this year and was disappointed. to me that’s cheating
MLB Trade Rumors expects the Yankees to re-sign Damon
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions
Hee hee
Is there someone out there who is on record saying he wants to be a Yankee but the Yankees would never want to sign?
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
I don't remember Sheffield saying he wanted to rejoin the Yankees, but I could've easily missed it
At any rate, what the Yankees do is not really my priority. My primary concern is the Tigers, and they play the Yankees 8 times at the most (7 times next year). Therefore, figuring out how to beat the AL Central should be the focus.
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:43 PM EST up reply actions
I've seen it a few places.
And I agree about focusing on the Central. But we would have to deal with them at some point.
the homers have been nice
But otherwise, not the greatest.

Actually, just imprint it on their equipment so it is always visible to the pitchers.

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:53 PM EST up reply actions
Hey, the last time the World Series went the way I wanted it to was 2002
I’m not counting 2005 (when I strictly went AL over NL, as neither the White Sox nor the Astros thrilled me) or 2003 (when I would’ve rooted for the Yankees at the time, but since then, there’s been a couple players from that Marlins team whom I’ve come to know and love; at the time I had no idea who any of them were).
And this is how “AL over NL” I’ve been in my life: 2007 was the first time I rooted for an NL team in the World Series.
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 9:58 PM EST up reply actions
thanks
that’s not small cabbage either
you could argue that the $113 is better spent. They are in the same place with 1/2 the payroll.
I agree somewhat.
That would be totally true had the Yanks not bought CC, Tex, and Burnett. Those 3 salaries make up a huge portion of the payroll gap.
all the final four teams had relatively large payrolls
Not Yankee large, but not the dinkiness of some teams either.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
So basically, no Rays this time, then?
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
Am I correct in thinking the Marlins still have the lowest payroll?
Or have the Pirates surpassed them, so to speak?
The Marlins aren’t that bad of a team.
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions
Thanks
The last time I saw, the Marlins were at $22 million, so they’ve gone up a bit. They’ll have to go up even higher if they want to sign Josh Johnson long-term like they did Hanley.

Ack, Pinstripe Alley is really hard to follow
They put up, like, 19 comments at once. You can’t have a conversation with anyone.
smart strategy
argue with the umpire and delay the game because you can’t communicate with your pitcher
Why not?

I just told someone I wanted the Tigers to play the Tigers next year in the WS (meant to say Dodgers).
does anyone else have their local Fox affiliate advertising their local news with a "Friends" theme?
Nope
My Fox affiliate advertised their news with “Find out which high school football teams made the playoffs.” Like I care. My old high school went 1-9 and is a dinky little Catholic school that never gets any media coverage.
by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 1, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions
for all the angst about the pitching matchup
Blanton has done a pretty good job, and Sabathia has been plenty hittable – the Phillies just couldn’t get enough hits with runners in scoring position and drive them in.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
that would be exciting
Even better would be a STUPENDOUS COMEBACK to tie the series at two games each.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
This appears to be one of those series...
where it’s 3-1, the home team gives one last great effort to push it to 6, and then it ends.
Reminds me of 1993
Curt Schilling pitched a 2-0 shutout in Game 5, then joe carter came up in game 6…
Have you guys thought
that this game feels like wading in mud. Ugh, the pace
I had to root for Posada all year -
He was my fantasy baseball starting catcher!
you would have done great
If mileage walked was one of the stats.
"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero
I can't argue with Posada's stats
He did pretty well this season
Sabrerose -
Instead odf Dodgers-Tigers, would you take a Phillies-Tigers series in 2010? ;)
I like the Dodgers better than the Phillies, but we can't really control the NL, obviously
I don’t think that would be a good matchup for the Tigers, cuz you guys are heavy on the lefty power hitters and our pitching is mostly right-handed. Bad match.
Bottom line, though: I’ll be thrilled to have the Tigers in the WS, no matter WHO the opponent is. Trust me, I won’t do a lot of complaining in the NLCS.

the "suggestion" from Fox at Halftime for the Lions was "Catch the Football"
I laughed so hard when I saw that.
they didn’t listen though
The Eagles beat the NY Giants 40-17 today
I was hoping I could borrow some of those points and apply them to this game…
I almost NEVER make solid predictions like this, but I'll take the chance
Phillies in 6
This is not the result I want, but it is what my instincts are telling me right now. And my instincts have served me well, at least in terms of the Tigers.
I have no strong feelings toward the Yankees either way
They are merely another team. They exist.

Projected 2010 WS starters:
1. Lee vs. Verlander
2. P. Martinez vs. E. Jackson
3. Hamels vs. Porcello
4. Blanton vs. Bonderman?
Wow, now we're predicting rotations! I like this...
I would agree with the Tigers’ side, except Verlander goes in #4 on short rest

I can't think of one game we had them besides that 12-5 miracle over the Sox.

Seems like it would be part of the fundamentals of making sure all the bases are covered, but the closer would probably be the most likely to forget about that.
