Rick Porcello Finishes 3rd in AL Rookie of the Year Vote
Jason Beck reports on his blog that Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher Rick Porcello finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting.
Oakland closer Andrew Bailey (13 first-place votes) was the winner (which, to me, is kind of a surprise). Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus finished second.
Porcello received seven first-place votes, but eight writers left him off their ballot entirely.

Would love to hear...
from any Tigers fans if you expect Porcello’s strikeout rate to go up over the next couple years. (I.e. “pull a Verlander”) Is he being limited in what pitches he can throw? Does he need to push one pitch to the next step?

Tough one
He’s clearly smart enough to adapt his arsenal and to miss bats, but he’s going to have to develop a breaking pitch that can fool hitters.
That’s kind of a non-answer, or kind of pointless, but he’s got to work on his arsenal some in the offseason.

Well, it would be hard for his strikeout rate to get any lower.
Plus, he certainly showed flashes of good strikeout stuff, particularly in the final game against MN. If I remember correctly, he struck out 8 in fewer than 6 innings. While it’s probably futile to extrapolate from one outing, it does show that he has the stuff to get strikeouts when he needs them.

I think it will go up
They didn’t allow him to throw his slider much at all, and then shelved what was at times a pretty nice looking curve.
He won’t get near Verlander when it comes to strikeouts ever in his career but I do think the pitches and talent are there to get more — unless the batters just keep swinging early in the count and grounding out anyway, like they did for a good portion of the season.

WHAT?
“eight writers left him off their ballot entirely.”
And they wonder why the internet is always in attack mode regarding the mainstream media…

Those eight are all probably huge Youkilis fans.

Huge Youkalis fans . . .
We haven’t seen much of the petite version of Youkalis in the majors, so at this point, any fan of Youkalis is pretty much a fan of huge Youkalis.

one possible conclusion
Eight writers need to have both thumbs broken with a ball-peen hammer.

gotta be honest here
I don’t think it was necessarily true that Porcello was a top three. I think he has a bit of an argument for it, based on his month of May and how he finished the season. That’s why I put him third above the others. But comparing him to some other guys, I can see why people might leave him off the ballot entirely.

+1
Chris Kahrl at Baseball Prospectus was one of the eight… she makes a really good case for the other three.

It's official...
Kid Rick is pretty good.
Thusly, MLB Trade Rumors will have a post on him tomorrow, with Rosenthal projecting him going to the Yankees for a bunch of Yogi Berra’s old catchers gear.

That's some pretty good gear... might be too much to ask
I really want to make a comment about Cory Lidle here… but it would be tasteless.

Andrus got hosed.
I didn’t expect Ricky to pick it up the way The Buzz™ had been trending but I don’t care for Bailey getting it.

I've stated my opinion on closers but to reiterate: closers are overvalued.
Andrus should have won since I’d take a good, young shortstop over a closer.

Have the Cy Young results been announced already?
There was a post on MLB Trade Rumors saying Greinke had won the Cy Young, but that post is gone now and there’s nothing on mlb.com.

I believe the announcement is scheduled for noon ET. It could’ve leaked out already, though.

yeah, they are gonna do another live stream broadcast thing on mlb.com
I think it starts at 1:30 ET. but the links to watch the preview are all messed up, and things on the site are generally acting up, so I could be wrong..
