Happy Thanksgiving From BYB

Unless something truly newsworthy takes place between now and Monday (the trade speculation's gotten a bit tiresome), the content's going to be pretty light around here. (I could always get bored on Friday afternoon, though.)

If you need a brief distraction, please vote in our latest poll. I left college football behind last Saturday, after finding my favorite holiday movie, Home For the Holidays, on TV. That got me thinking about holiday movies for a poll. I'm sure I left plenty of good ones out, so let us know your favorites in the comments.

As always, thank you for your continued readership, participation, and enthusiasm. You've made it quite a year at BYB.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Please enjoy your holiday and the favorite dish that comes with it.

Great list...

I would opine that Scrooged should be on there. Nothing like Bill Murray getting hit with a toaster to get the holiday spirit going.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

I don't mean to be the proverbial "scrooge"...

but I hate holiday movies. The actual Holidays are ok though. Hope you guys enjoy yours! I may slice some turkey for someone at some point.

I understand

Holiday movies are too often sappy, formulaic, and full of stereotyped people and situations. Real holidays are full of people we care about instead of cartoony characters, and situations that are stressful because that’s life, not because the script calls for it. :)

I ended up voting for "It's a Wonderful Life"

…but I was really torn between that and “A Christmas Story,” which I enjoy watching with my parents. My mom can identify the year, make, and model of just about every car in the movie (She gets pretty nostalgic about the whole movie, even though she grew up in the 50s/60s, not the 40s)

Thanksgiving was never a big deal for me

Just a nice long weekend to catch up on things! And after working in retail, the “holidays” don’t start until December 5th for me — period!

Yeah yeah, I’m a Scrooge.

Anyone else go out on Black Friday?

Sort of.

In the second annual event, my friend and I left our other friend’s house around 2am. We proceeded to drive around the metro Detroit area until around 7:30, logging around 300 miles in the duration. We drive past lines and just generally wander aimlessly stopping for energy drinks and food.

If you’re familiar with I-696 in the Detroit area, you might know the three long tunnels with a bunch of lights in them. Ever wonder what was actually over those tunnels? Cemetery and a park. This took about 45 minutes for us to figure out.

So yeah I guess I went out, just not for shopping.

by john.kmiecik on Nov 27, 2009 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

I got dragged to wal-mart

but they had a bunch of toys for $5, which my dad and I donated for needy kids in the area. it wasn’t that bad, just a little more crowded than a typical weekend.

I refuse...

but it turns out that I could’ve grabed and 8 gig flash drive for 14 bucks. Plus I could’ve added my discount. Oh well. Maybe they’ll still be available tomorrow. I doubt it but I can hope.

Once the stores start opening at midnight (you know it'll happen someday), I might partake

But I just can’t do 4 AM. I can barely get myself up at 6 AM to get to school. But I do appreciate everyone else who did because they were all shopping or at home while I was at work. The pharmacy was quite calm for once.

I'd like to think that it would stay at 4am.

But all it will take is one store opening at midnight and slaughtering the competition for it all to change.

A heaping helping of Griswold, please.

For me, nothing beats Christmas Vacation. It’s not Christmas if I havent heard Clark rant about “Bing Crosby and Danny Fucking Kaye.”

Happy (belated) Fakesgiving! Put yours in October where it belongs! :)

We might've been first after all.

Martin Frobisher, who explored in the Canadian Arctic, held a Thanksgiving event in Newfoundland in 1578. Samuel de Champlain and his colleagues had routine Thanksgivings from 1604 onwards, with the Natives. Take that, Puritans! :)

But, on a more serious note, I have the Packers in my football pool, so if I should give thanks to someone, it should be the scheduler at the NFL who lined up a date for them with the Lions.

In terms of naming official holidays the U.S wins 1941 v. 1957...

but has been a tradition in the U.S since 1863 with the one at Plymouth Plantation being generally recognized as the first in 1621.

so U.S.A FTW.

A Christmas Carol

Just about any version would do, but I’m partial to the one with the late great George C. Scott, and I’ll take the one with Patrick Stewart.

Marley was dead, to begin with.

Both my answers in one place!

I don’t like Christmas films but I never turn down watching something with Chevy Chase in it. That movie always cracks me up.

I didn’t even leave the house on Black Friday, I’m nursing a cold. When a teacher says “Oh thanks for making it on short notice, I got to school and started feeling sick immediately” bathe in Purrell the entire day.

that movie terrified me when I was a kid

The abominable snowman was scary. When the scene would come on where Rudolph was floating alone on the ice floe and the roar of the abominable snowman came from over the ice mountains on the horizon, I would run down the hallway to my bedroom and hide my head under the pillows. (I only know this from my parents’ reports, as it was a long time ago – but it sounds extremely plausible.)

Now I’m okay with it. I know it’s only a movie. :)

Anyone watch MLB Network this weekend?

Apparently they’ve been showing a marathon of old All-Star Games. I was channel surfing and ended up watching the end of the ‘97 ASG and the beginning of the ’94 ASG. I don’t remember if I watched these when they actually happened (I would’ve been in middle school at the time), but it amused me that while I recognized most of the names, occasionally there would be someone to whom I would think, “Who the hell are you?” I was also amazed at how young Mariano Rivera looked (not to mention the broadcasters referring to him and some other guys who are now battle-tested veterans as “kids”).

it really is going by much faster than i thought it would, but not fast enough. Those of us fortunate enough to have FSD will get to watch some exhibition games in about 115 days or sooner. Yay!!

lol flying

Unless leaving the country overseas, I’ll never fly in America. The hassle is just not worth it combined with the ridiculous amount of money it costs.

me too

I used to like flying but hate airports – now I just dislike the entire experience (from the reports of others, as I haven’t flown in years).

I may have to fly to California for a conference in May, though. Not sure yet if it would be worthwhile to go.

I've only flown once in my entire life

It was a trip to Florida, and it was five years ago. I didn’t really have a problem with anything except the fact that no one told me my ears would keep popping, but things may have changed in the last five years (plus the only two airports where I had to go through security were Toledo and Orlando).
