World Series Game 6 Open Thread

The Philadelphia Phillies showed they're still "The Fightins" by winning Monday's Game 5, and sending the World Series back to New York.  Did they regain momentum in this series, or do the Yankees still have an insurmountable lead?

For the third straight game, the Yanks will start a pitcher on short rest.  Joe Girardi has a 50% success rate on this, with CC Sabathia pitching well and A.J. Burnett faltering.  Could this aggressive approach end up backfiring on the Yankees' manager?

The starting pitchers for Game 6 are Pedro Martinez for the Phillies and Andy Pettitte for the Yankees.

(And how can you not love the cover of today's New York Post?)

The Good Phight and Pinstripe Alley are your SB Nation sites to follow this evening.

But Pedro sure looks like he’s in trouble tonight.

He doesn’t have the velocity or the control to pitch well this game. All over the place.

Still might be a better idea.

Limit the damage to just one run.

I like this feeling even less than I recall :(

Good evening

Surprised Manuel didn’t have a quicker hook.

Kind of a do-or-die situation tonight.

maybe not

Somehow I suspect some of the lyrics are a bit on the profane side.

Or at least they should be.

But I was going to say I’’ve been trying to watch these games, but I really really can’t listen to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. Especially Tim McCarver.

And there sure is a lot of empty white space in here!

I just got home from work. I did hear that the Yankees were rapidly running out of outfielders.

This I have to share

Last night at the pharmacy, there was a customer who was virtually the spitting image of Polanco. His head was a tad smaller (just a tad) but other than that he looked exactly like him. He even sounded like him (sans accent). For the record, I did not wait on him, unfortunately.

they still have four innings to come back

Just need to hold down the Yankees from here on out. And score a few runs before Rivera comes in, preferably.

Not over yet, kiddo.

Yay! Comments are updating now!

For some reason, BYB wasn’t updating. I knew it wasn’t SBN, because TrueBlueLA and Pinstripe Alley are working just fine. I finally switched to Firefox and that cleared it up.

Heh

Some people I overheard at work tonight who are rooting for the Yankees were thanking their lucky stars that Cliff Lee wasn’t pitching tonight. Funny enough, one of those involved in the discussion was wearing a Red Sox hat.

Matsui or Damon

How the heck can the Yankees be thinking of keeping Noodle-Arm instead of Godzilla? That would be stupid to keep Damon instead of Matsui.

Well, on the bright side, this might make it more likely that Matsui would get the MVP instead of a phony like A-Rod.

I’m gonna sign off, guy, and finally get some sleep!
It was fun chatting with all you baseball fans the past week – as I said before it’s always interesting to see what fans in other parts of the country think.
In 2010 I’ll have to follow the Tigers so I can know what you guys are talking about!

good night

You pushed the Yankees harder than either of their other opponents, and still finish the year National League champs after winning the World Series last year. Not a bad couple of postseasons. :)

Have a good offseason and best of luck starting in spring training in 2010.

I've been doing the same thing

I started dipping into the MLB.tv archives a couple days ago. The problem is that I can’t watch any games from the first half or the end of September without getting depressed (which limits me to a 2-month span covering late July, all of August, and early September). I watched Justin Verlander’s start against the Boston Red Sox today. He was dealing in that game. Struck out Jason Bay on a 100 MPH fastball when he was over 120 pitches.

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 4, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, I was looking through jason beck's twitter

trying to find an old link he had posted, and I read through his tweets during the final game. it made me feel sick to my stomach all over again. not sure why I still have that game saved on the DVR, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch any of it again.

by allikazoo on Nov 4, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I have it on tape somewhere (problem is I never label thing and I have no idea which tape it is)

Whenever I read Jason Beck’s Twitter on my iPod, it’ll show me the most recent tweet, but then it skips over a bunch of tweets in the “Previous Tweets” part of the page. So, for example, when he posted the tweet about Scott Sizemore needing surgery, the next listed tweet was something like “Inge has gotten that call a couple times this season—not this time.” It only JUST got out of the tweets from the last game. Almost like it was frozen in time and didn’t want to accept what happened.

Maybe in case you ever ingest something poisonous and need to induce vomiting? That’s the only reason I’d keep it – for an emergency puke. :(

Good night, all. Since it could be another hour before the game is over going by the pace of other Yankee games.

congratualations yanks...

For the first time in 9 years, you did your job as the most ridiculously overpaid team in any sport.

Way to go. You paid for it. You earned it. I guess.

Question

Do any of you see the Tigers being able to keep any of our young stars (Verlander, Cabrera, Granderson, Porcello, etc) for the duration of their careers? Or will the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, and Angels snatch them all away?

by SabreRoseTiger on Nov 4, 2009 11:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Barring a major fall in the pizza market..

Mr. I will not allow JV, Cabby, or Porcello to leave. Grandy, if he can’t hit lefties, who knows?

People underestimate just how badly Mr. I wants to win. He doesn’t need the money. His family doesn’t need the money. Basically anything worth owning in Detroit proper, they own (well, maybe Mr. Karmanos owns a few things).

The one thing Mr. I has never done, in business or in sports, is win a World Series. He’s not going to go quietly.

Ack! My wifi connection died just as Shane Victorino was stepping to the plate

I had to switch computers.

Anyways, that’s all she wrote for 2009 (She could’ve written a better ending, but at the same time, it could’ve been worse). Now to begin the long, long wait until pitchers and catchers with nothing to do but follow the hot stove (and that always seems to bring out the worst in people). No more game/open threads until April. In the meantime, I’m sure I’ll see you guys around the rest of BYB.

For now, good night!
