Time for a new jersey!

With Polanco's impending departure from wearing the Old English D, I need a new jersey. Polly was very much my player in that few others followed him with fanatiscism and I rarely saw a Polanco jersey in the wild. So I turn to the BYB gang for advice as to who will be on my back for the next four years when I'm sporting that D. Verlander/Cabrera/Inge/Granderson are out because they're either too popular or may not last too long on the Tigers. I'm considering a Porcello jersey but it might be a bit too early for that. However the prospect pool is always a dangerous place to go for a jersey shirt let alone a real jersey, so I'm not sure who else I could don with any kind of hope it'll last me a couple of seasons.

So, suggestions?

Throwback

Get a Fielder or Tramm…

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

Nah, that wouldn't feel right.

Wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing it as often as I wear my Polly (once at week during the season, just about) or my Mud Hens (little less frequently). That and I wasn’t a big fan of the team in those days, my fanaticism was reserved for the Red Wings.

I know the feeling

And eventually a “throwback” jersey is the route I’d like to take, but not yet. Cecil Fielder was my favorite player as a kid, so I could go that route, but I’d prefer someone I remember more vividly. Therefore, I would dearly love for someone like Verlander or Granderson to remain a Tiger for their entire (long and successful) career so I can have their jersey years after they’re out of baseball. I wonder if I’ll feel that way about my Pudge jersey in ten years or so…

You really can't go wrong...

…with Jim Walewander (#32).

Just sayin’.

I may actually buy a jersey sometime in the next two years.

But it is either Tettleton or Lemon; leaning very strongly towards Chet the Jet.

Milton Bradley, of course :)

by rea on Dec 2, 2009 10:08 AM EST reply actions

I'd totally do that

Provided we traded for him, of course.

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

Well I’m probably going to go with a kid. It’ll either be Porcello or Avila. The Avila jersey makes me nervous though, he’s not exactly heir-apparent to Laird just yet.

by john.kmiecik on Dec 2, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions

i'd hold out and go with Avila

just something about the kid, I really like his game.

You and me both

When do you think the safe point will be on him?

by john.kmiecik on Dec 2, 2009 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

Or 2009

If they deal Laird.

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

by David Tokarz on Dec 2, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

he really wasn't that bad at it though...

and really that is quite an exceptional standard to hold the kid too.

Best defensive catcher in baseball.

I like how I called him a "kid" and he's older than me...

I’m either an old spirit or maybe I find facial hair immature.

Hee hee

He is younger than me, though not THAT much younger (4 years). And, yes, my defensive standards for catchers are high (but as a Yankees fan pointed out to me, Tigers fans have been spoiled over the years by having several catchers who could defend well and weren’t too shabby with the bat).

I’d still like a Verlander jersey, but with my luck, the instant I bought it his name would be thrown out there along with the others in trade rumors (buying a Pudge jersey and seeing him get traded less than a year later has made me a bit gunshy). Perhaps I’ll wait until spring training.

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 3, 2009 7:22 AM EST up reply actions

Same dilemma...

but I think I may end up just keeping the Polanco jersey in the game.

by wepri31 on Dec 3, 2009 8:51 PM EST reply actions

Keep it blank for now

My brother’s in the same boat — I bought him a really nice Cool Base Polly jersey in ‘06, so we’ve been snooping around.

Your problem is similar to like the early-2000s Tigers. The “New Tigers with Buddy Bell” roster that had been built for the move to Comerica was starting to be disassembled by that point. You didn’t want an Easley or Tony the Tiger or Deivi Cruz, or even a 5-tool Encarnacion jersey. When Craigslist launched its Detroit site, half of the listings were folks looking to offload Higginson 4’s. So people either got Jeff Weaver jerseys, or shirts for flashes in the pan like Rob Fick and Shane Halter.

There’s still some obvious centerpiece-of-the-franchise jerseys you can get, like Verlander, Cabrera, Porcello. Nobody will ever give you crap for an Inge jersey.

But there’s no Granderson on the roster now, literally and metaphorically. You don’t have that surefire, home grown, everyday young centerpiece of the franchise that makes a jersey buy easy.

If you’ re intent on one, and don’t mind taking a gamble to get out ahead of everyone, I would recommend Avila. If you don’t mind a pitcher (I personally like position players because they’ll be out there when you go), Verlander and Porcello are as good of bets as you can find in MLB.

Otherwise, get a blank jersey and wait a few years. DD’s only just begun dismantling the ‘06-’09 team. The star jerseys from that era (Polanco, Granderson, Pudge, Magglio, Inge, Robertson, et al.) were beloved enough in their time that you can still wear their numbers proudly through what looks to be a rough upcoming few years. By mid-season this year, and probably through the next two or three years, I get the feeling that just showing up to the ballpark will get you enough fan respect that you could be wearing a Juan Gonzalez jersey and people wouldn’t give you crap.

Okay, nevermind, if you show up in a Juan Gonzalez jersey, you’re going to get crap.

A Max Scherzer jersey might be safe

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

by David Tokarz on Dec 10, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

God, I love this idea.

I love it so much. I’ve watched a whole lot of Scherzer for no good reason, and now that he’s a Tiger?

Needs to pick his number.

by john.kmiecik on Dec 10, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Don't worry, I usually tend to check what the guy's number was, too

36, 37, and presumably 56 are now available. But he’s not allowed to wear #7 :-p (Though I probably shouldn’t be concerned about that, since pitchers rarely wear single-digit numbers. I wonder why that is).

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 11, 2009 6:07 AM EST up reply actions

Your view of the Tigers is so pessimistic, I have to wonder why you're here.

2010 might look a bit iffy, but so did 2009. 2011 and beyond? Going to take a lot of horrible luck for it to be the early 2000s all over again.
