Passing the BYB Baton

Given what a crazy week it's been around here, this announcement may not seem well-timed. But it really needs to be made now, so things can go smoothly.

I am going to be stepping down as managing editor and writer of Bless You Boys. I've given this much thought over the past couple of months, since the Tigers' season ended, and my belief that it's something I should do gets only stronger with time.

I've been writing at BYB for the past three years, and can honestly say I've put everything I have into it, trying to make it the best Detroit Tigers blog available. But looking at the next year to come, I know I won't be able to give this site and its community the same attention as I have previously. Working on BYB has been extremely gratifying, and I want to make sure it stays that way. The last thing I want is for you (or SB Nation) to let me know that I'm not doing as good of a job anymore.

But the changes to come shouldn't be too drastic, as the new managing editor is someone you're very familiar with. Kurt Mensching is a valuable part of the BYB community, and if you've read Mack Avenue Tigers, you know he does an excellent job of providing the sort of thoughtful, fair analysis that isn't available anywhere else in the traditional media nor the Tigers blogosphere.

Will this be the same BYB you've become accustomed to? Well, what we have here works, for the most part, and Kurt knows that. So a winning formula isn't going to be completely overhauled. But Kurt is his own man with definite ideas on how this blog and community can be run, and I think it'll be exciting to see what a fresh voice brings to this site. I'll let Kurt speak for himself in that regard, however.

Star-divide

I do plan on still having a role at BYB from here on out. Kurt and I will determine what exactly that will be in the weeks and months to come. But I still want to write about the Tigers, and still want to participate in a community that's become a huge part of my life.

There will be some transition over the next couple of weeks, as I "clean out my desk" and help Kurt with what he needs to familarize himself with the inner workings of this site. But the plan is to change things over by the end of the year. So there will definitely be a time for a proper goodbye. I have a lot of people to thank, and want to make sure I do that before moving on.

Any questions, thoughts, or concerns can be left in the comments of this post, and Kurt and I will do our best to address them as thoroughly as possible. You can also e-mail me or find me on Facebook, if you prefer to reach me that way.

As always, thank you for reading and giving your time to Bless You Boys. It's been a wonderful experience following the Detroit Tigers with you.

IANNNNNNNNNNNN NOooooooooooooooOOooOOooo

This Tigers team is DEFINITELY going to look different in 2010.

On the plus side, I think Kurt will do a bang-up job. But Ian will definitely be missed.

Thank you Ian

Kurt will do an awesome job, but you’ll be missed around here. Make sure you drop in from time to time.

Earlier this week

I raised my Tigers shot glass to Curtis Granderson. Tonight I shall raise it to you Ian.
Thanks for keeping us all informed and entertained.

Thanks Ian...

You helped develop an excellent place for Tigers fans to come in and talk about something they absolutely love. Your analysis was always appreciated and I hope to continue to see your analysis on this site. If I had to chose someone to replace you here it would’ve been Kurt.

You’ve been a class act towards everyone here. Nobody has ever felt that their opinion’s (or flamethrowers) weren’t welcome. I do not partake in the alcohol but whatever I have a drink of tonight, the glass will be raised to you.

Jesus Zoidberg blesses you Ian.

Thanks, Ian

You have made this the best Tigers blog available. I think the very cool community vibe that goes with it is mostly your doing too. You’ll be missed.

But kudos on picking a capable replacement. We’ll look forward to your contributions, whatever they are.

Goodness gracious

I’m not going to recognize anything about the Tigers in 2010. Best wishes, Ian. Hopefully you’ll still be popping in from time to time!

Oh and also

welcome Kurt. Although, I guess it’s not like you’re a stranger or something ;-)

Just as long as . . .

. . . you are not going to go blog for the Yankees . . .

I forgot to make that joke

I was going to say I was traded to Pinstripe Alley for jscape2000 and CrazyYankeeChick.

Or that I was a candidate for the head coaching job at Notre Dame. (Brian Kelly killed that joke for me.)

Or that the truth about me and Tiger Woods would soon come out.

So many possibilities. Can I write that post again?

You mean . . .

That Tiger has been unfaithful to me with you? I’m shocked . . .

You'll be missed

Even though I don’t comment much, I still appreciate BYB a lot. You will be missed Ian. BYB is my FIRST stop for Tigers information and news every day. While I’m sure BYB will remain excellent, I will miss your perspective and writing style.

thanks for everything

thanks to Ian fostering such a great community, after lurking awhile I showed up to comment on a random gamethread in June and this place quickly became my home for all things Tigers online. I think that’s the case for a lot of us. with Kurt running the place, I’m sure it’ll continue to be awesome, no matter what happens with the team.

The thoroughness of all your posts, even this one, was much appreciated.

So too was the appropriate level of moderation. Following the Tigers wouldn’t be the same without this site.

Thank you Ian

You’ve made BYB a really enjoyable blog to read over the past few years. I will definitely miss your post game write-ups which were usually humorous and could take the sting out of bad losses. This is easily my favorite one.

Thanks for keeping me up to date with Tigers news every day through BYB.

Also, good to see someone like Kurt getting the chance to take over.

I think that was definitely one of my favorite posts to write. Ah, Grilli… so good for blogging.

Thanks a ton Ian

You’ve been a damn fine moderator and the fact that you’re willing to help run this house of crazy is a testament to your character. And good luck to Kurt- he’s got big shoes to fill (though I’m sure he’ll do a wonderful job).

I agree with BigJP

that losing you adds to the sorrow of losing Polly and Grandy. I mostly lurk, but BYB is my favorite of the Tiger blogs, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your leadership here, Ian. Best wishes for your future endeavors. And, welcome to Kurt as our new leader and overlord. :)

So long and thanks for all the Fish!

but seriously, thank you for this great community. it helped me go from a casual fan (oh look, the tigers won/lost again) to “dang that adam everett, always out #3!” and “RABURN WITH THE WALKOFF!!” You fostered a place where we could all be together and just have fun while enjoying our team. I’m a member of some of the other detroit sports blogs here; they’re not nearly as energetic or enthusiastic as this place, and i feel that the way you handled things helped to foster that energy.

So thanks, and maybe i’ll see you at the meetup in July.

What a week.

I know Kurt will do an excellent job here, but damn, Ian. I only hope this means you are going to be working hard(er) on some other writing. And this in no way gets you out of buying me a beverage at Mexican Village in December.

WAT

everything is changing, i don’t know that i can handle this

MY TINY MIND IS NOT PREPARED

what are you doing instead of blog-mastering? i hope it’s exciting. also glad you’re handing it over to kurt instead of some scummy stranger who would have to grovel for our battered trust.

I almost spewed coffee all over my keyboard when I read this...

Yes, this is a bit of a surprise.

if anyone is going to replace you as head honcho at BYB, Ian, I’m glad it’s Kurt. The blog is in the best of hands.

But what the Hell? What on earth is going on in Tiger-land? I need a drink…

Sad news indeed, Ian

As someone who was a constant lurker throughout 2007 and again in early 2009 before finally making my presence known during a wacky west coast game against the Angels in April, I appreciate how you and the other BYBers made me feel welcome. I thank you for your tireless efforts at making BYB into a real community where most of us enjoy and respect one another (even when we disagree), and for putting up with the communal ADD with off-topic posts and way-too-large images (having been one of the guilty parties in the past, I really appreciate this). I wish you luck in your future endeavours.

And if BYB is the first place I go for all things Tigers, Mack Avenue Tigers is my second stop. Kurt, I know you will do an excellent job here.

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 11, 2009 1:28 PM EST reply actions

Old place isn't gonna be the same without you

I’ve been hanging around here for my Tigers news for the last three seasons (joined up April 2, 2007, apparently), which pretty much means that as long as I’ve turned to a blog for Tigers info, I’ve been looking your way, Ian.

And even if I did branch out some over the past year…I’m going to miss your particular voice regarding this team, this franchise.

In a way, this announcement is hitting me worse than the Grandy announcement…it’s not like I know Granderson at all. But Ian?

Good luck in whatever you’re scampering off to do…and be sure to wander in here occasionally to say hello. Don’t make me facebook stalk ya :p

And thanks for the past three years.

BYI (Bless you, Ian)

I am sorry I only learned of the site in the last few months of your tenure. It is a wonderful space, particularly for us Tigerfans in exile who can’t share the love/pain/bad puns in person. Not to oversentimentalize, but it also gave me new hope about the Internet or perhaps even humanity—I had pretty much given up on the possibility of an open comments forum which did not devolve into ideological rants and name-calling. I don’t give you 100% of the credit for that—Tiger fans clearly are a superior breed to begin with—but I give you a good deal of it. Thanks, and don´t be a stranger.

Thanks, Ian

I’ve said it before, but I don’t know how you’ve managed to keep this site going the way it has for so long. Splendid job.

BYB has enhanced my enjoyment of the Tigers since I discovered it a while back…so much so that it was a big part in starting my own little crap blog…for better or worse.

Good luck in your future plans. Be sure to pop in from time to time.

As for Kurt, the site couldn’t be in better hands, in my opinion. Good luck to you, too.

Sometimes you must move on but you’ve done a very good job and helped foster a good community. Thanks Ian.

Bad news

My favorite Tiger is going to the Yankees, my favorite Tigers-Blogger is leaving too. Man, that’s no good news at the end of the Year for me. But, at least, you will be writing here in the future. I always appreciate the efforts you made for this wonderful Blog. Thank you, Ian. Good bless you.
