Isn't Wang a ground ball pitcher?

He could be a good risk for a few reasons: a) we could always use more relief arms/emergency starters (wink, wink), b) he could come cheap, c) Taiwan would love the Tigers even more meaning possibly more Taiwan money for the Tigers, d) I think it wouldn’t be that risky.

Depends on how cheap.

We’re definitely spending worse money than taking a flyer on a once-dominant starter. He is a ridonkulous GB pitcher, when he’s on. In his best year, 2006, he had better than three on the ground for every one in the air. That is looney tunes.

Problem is, we already have so many project pitchers costing us so much money, that I’m not sure we can justify the roster slot, let alone the money. If he would come for less than a million, maybe. I’d love to see him here, but I’d almost rather see Miner get the innings.

It’s also worth remembering that his crazy GB rate and low HR rate are more valuable to teams in smaller stadiums, so the risk might reap more benefit for them.

I don't want to hear any weak sh*t from Jason Grilli.

Jim loves the ground ball.

I can see your points on the fact we’re loaded with reclamation projects/rehabbing pitchers but I think Wang could come for a small price thanks to how poorly he pitched and his injury. We’re in agreement about Miner but he’s going to be a bullpen guy since Leyland won’g give up on that dream.

Also: Tiger’s Wang shuts down opponent. How could you not want that headline?

Jack Cust . . .

Left handed OF/DH type with good power and decent obp—strikes out a lot, though, and not exactly a defensive wiz . . .

Lots of interesting relievers, but the one thing the Tigers have a surplus of is interesting relievers.

Ryan Langerhans

Good defensive player, left-handed bat, some power and lots of walks.

Matt Capps interests me...

He’s not flashy and he’s gonna give up his fair share of hits, but we have a solid defense behind him. What he won’t do is walk anybody.

To acknowledge my general lack of baseball knowledge…what exactly does it mean to be non-tendered?

Agreed

I think Capps could be interesting. He is young (26) and has closed games. I wouldn’t mind a flyer on Wang (“Put the camera away Wang, it’s a parking lot!”)

To quote:
Major League clubs must offer contracts to players on its roster by December 12. In general, an offer may not be less than 80% of the player’s salary and performance bonuses the previous year or less than 70% of his salary and performance bonuses from two years earlier.

If a club has no interest in keeping a particular player, the club may choose to non-tender him, or to not offer him a contract. A player generally becomes a candidate to be non-tendered when he is arbitration-eligible and his club determines he is not worth the salary he might command in arbitration. A player who is non-tendered becomes a free agent and may sign with any of the 30 Major League clubs, including his former team, at any price.

Thanks...

that’s pretty much what I figured it meant. Just wanted to be sure.

a friend of mine really likes kelly johnson

mostly she has a crush on him – but it did cause me to pay more attention to him last year. it’s too bad his wrist injury added to a down couple of years he’s had. he should do better offensively now. since he’s a 2B (former OF) we don’t really need him, but I do hope he gets picked up by someone and gets some playing time.

Might be worth looking into as well.

Left handed bat with decent power makes him all the more interesting for us.

not sure

I haven’t checked his stats, I’ll have to ask my friend. I read that he wants to play fulltime somewhere though, could we offer him that? I don’t think he’d be TOO expensive though, which is a plus.

I'm interested in Kelly Johnson, too

A guy who can play second base and left field could be useful on next year’s roster.

by Ian Casselberry on Dec 13, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Arredondo cheap

And for a 2 year deal would make me happy. I know he won’t pitch in 2010 but he’d be a great investment, IMO and worth giving a shot to in 2011. Guys recover from Tommy Johns now, it’s not like it used to be, he could still be very effective.

Also, I’d be thrilled if the Tigers signed Capps, I think he would be the #1 pick for closer if he signed here, and Wang would be a nice sign with Bill Knapp here, who taught a sinker baller (Kid Rick) how to use his effectively so he could be able to straighten him out.

Cust…just another version of Thames, though would be nice to have since he can hit LH. I’d sign him at a decent $ to replace the lack of power on this team and the bench.

sign Capps!!!!

He has tons of closing experience and can provide good leadership in the bullpen, even if does not end up closing

Hopefully

He’d probably come at a reasonable price

Oddly Enough

Everytime I play MLB 09: The Show, the Tigers end up trading for/signing Jack Cust.

No, I don’t know why, but I thought it was amusing.

by metatron5369 on Dec 13, 2009 4:02 PM EST reply actions

Haha, that's awesome

In 08’, every time the Tigers signed Matt Holiday on my franchises. In 09’, you can almost bet they end up with Rickie Weeks some how. I always wonder if it’s just how the rosters are set up or what but it’s odd how that happens.

Hmm

Jose Arrondero or Matt Capps would make for a couple really good long-term players… Cust, Wang and Johnson might be helpful too, especially if Kelly can play CF.

KJ hasn't played in the outfield since 2006

and even then it was only a few games. it’d be interesting to find out whether he’d be interested in switching, though.

Same here

Could be a useful stopgap CF.

I just noticed I used interesting/interested in one sentence

and I wasn’t even drinking this afternoon. oh well

guess we’ll see what happens this week. someone will definitely pick him up, I wonder if we are done shopping or not.

could be...

his arm strength may be gone due to Tommy John surgery…

I’d take him as the 2nd baseman, and have him bat leadoff

by Boney on Dec 14, 2009 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Tommy John surgery doesn't necessarily take away your arm strength if you rehab it properly

I know nothing of how Kelly Johnson’s surgery went, but Clete Thomas had Tommy John surgery last offseason and he still throws well.

I love the idea of getting Johnson and Wang

They are both at the lowest points in their respective careers and are excellent buy-low candidates. Offer them reasonable (cheap) contracts with incentives, so that if they perform then they’ll be paid accordingly; if they don’t, then no big deal, as we’ll have thrown a small chunk of cash at time. They bring a lot of risk, but they also could bring huge rewards. They’re both bound to bounce back….

by baum on Dec 14, 2009 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

No.

I don’t like any of those names. We’d be better with what we have.

I do like giving Capps a look because of his upside, but if the asking price is more than $2M, it’s not worth it. He had a 5.80 ERA last year…

A lifelong Tigers fan

by ewild on Dec 14, 2009 9:37 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn't put much weight on Capps' ERA

It appears to be a bit of an aberration. Also, Capps was injured for a good chunk of last year. That doesn’t mean he will revert to the Matt Capps of 2007-2008, but he is definitely more valuable than that 5.8 ERA. I would take a 3-4M flier on the guy.

Whenever I hear "Wang"

I think of Caddyshack

“Hey Wang this is a private club, don’t tell them you’re Jewish.”
