Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Tigers signed minor league pitcher Phil Dumatrait.

Dumatrait was non-tendered last week by the Pittsburgh Pirates, after the two sides couldn't agree on a contract. He missed large parts of the 2008 and 2009 seasons while recovering from shoulder surgery.

The 28-year-old left-hander pitched in 15 games as a reliever for the Pirates this year, compiling an 0-2 record and 6.92 ERA. He walked 11 batters in 13 innings. (Dumatrait also started 10 games in the minors this season.)

EDIT: ewild also posted this in a FanShot, adding that the Tigers signed first baseman Jason Stokes. Stokes hasn't played regularly since 2007.

I'm sure there's a reason for this,

but I’ll just lazily and snarkily suggest we’re trying to monopolize the left-handed reliever market.

I’m sure Dumatrait saw the $1 mil Brad Thomas got and said, “Gimme some o’ that!”

by Ian Casselberry on Dec 18, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

“Gimme some o’ that!” definitely didn’t cross my mind after a cursory look at his minor league stats. Being the Mad-Gab equivalent of Detroit must be his main selling point.

sounds like...

a perfect fit, they love guys who can walk lots of batters…

by LTownDown on Dec 20, 2009 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

yes

pays him 425K if he pitches in the big leagues

by BigJP on Dec 18, 2009 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Good

Might as well stock the system with more cheap arms with the hopes that 1 or 2 can stick….

by baum on Dec 18, 2009 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Meh.

Always nice to take a chance on a youngster who’s trying to rebound and hope he’ll be fine, but looking at his stats….well, I think I might be able to pitch a little better my rookie year (if I had a shot) than this guy did..

6 games, 6 starts…18 innings total. ERA 15.00, 6 HRS, 12 BB and 30 runs.

Luckily he cut his era down to 5 the next year but still was atrocious. Last year wasn’t any better.

As for Stokes…never heard of him and can’t find much on the guy.

Well…good luck to these two. They’re just here to fill gaps.

Hey, we need guys in Toledo, too :-p

I don’t know much about Stokes…perhaps they intend for him to take Mike Hessman’s place?

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 18, 2009 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

This makes sense.

Big shoes to fit. Cabrera-sized AAA-level shoes.

by john.kmiecik on Dec 18, 2009 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know how much Mike Hessman was talked about elsewhere

But he was the star player here in Toledo. Mud Hens fans loved him. But he’s no Miggy (understatement of the decade, here).

by SabreRoseTiger on Dec 18, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

He absolutely was.

Loved watching him when I go to Mud Hens games. I know he’s no Miggy but he was that kind of a big deal to that franchise.

I was glad to see him go, maybe he’ll get a shot at the bigs now.

by john.kmiecik on Dec 18, 2009 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

Eh, shore up the system I guess.

Cheap contracts help keep things flowing down there on the farm.

What is this sudden strange obscession . . .

. . . with lefthanded relievers? Is there some sinister purpose to it that I fail to grasp? Have all the other teams in the Central been stocking up on left-handed hitters? Will we carry 6 lefties and a ROOGY in the bullpen during the season? Is this yet another example of Dombrowski as a subtle humorist?

Ha, Pokemon reference

There used to be 150..now there’s like a gazillion.

Where am I going with this… :p

Stokes

Stokes was once a stud prospect in the Marlins system. He was ranked #13 by Baseball America in 2003. #12 was none other than Miguel Cabrera. His career was plagued by injuries though and he retired in 2007.

heres his wikipedia bio...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Stokes

Jason Stokes (born January 23, 1982 in Irving, Texas) was a first baseman in the Oakland Athletics and Florida Marlins organizations. He is currently in the Detroit Tigers organization.

As a senior for Coppell High School in Coppell, Texas, he hit 25 home runs, which still stands as the state single-season home run record. Stokes was named the Gatorade U.S. High School Baseball Player of the Year in 2000. He has been known to chew four cans of Copenhagen in one day.

Stokes was drafted in the second round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft by the Florida Marlins. His best season in the minor leagues was in 2002 with the Kane County Cougars, where he hit .341 with 27 home runs and 75 RBI, earning Stokes the Sporting News minor league player of the year award. Stokes participated in the 2002 All-Star Futures Game during All-Star Weekend, playing for the United States team. He was ranked as the Marlins number four prospect and “Best Power Prospect” entering the 2005 season according to Baseball America.

Injuries plagued Stokes’ career. His seasons with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes in 2005 and 2006 were cut short due to hand and groin injuries. After being traded to the Oakland Athletics organization in early 2007, Stokes played a few games with the Triple-A Sacramento Rivercats, but again went on the disabled list with a back injury. Due to accumulating injuries, Stokes retired from baseball at the end of the 2007 season.

On December 18, 2009, Stokes signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers ending his retirement saying hes healthy. This also includes an invite to spring training.

for having a billion anal-retentive editors

Wiki sure doesn’t know how to make sure the contraction “he is” is done right.

I don’t think this guy will play out into the big’s for us (just another power bat who doesn’t walk, plus he plays first). Like it was said above…we have spots to fill in Toledo as well.

Precisely.

And he was drafted while DD was the GM. He probably just remembered the kid, and figured that he could be great if he really is healthy. Low risk, and who knows? Maybe he’ll become the best of our generic 4A outfielders! Hooray!

I don't want to hear any weak sh*t from Jason Grilli.

well...

he’s not the non-tendered Pirate I was shooting for but I don’t think we’re gonna spend the money on him anyways.

In other news...

Acording to MLB TRADE RUMORS:

The Tigers purchased the contract of catcher Andy Bouchie from the Long Beach Armada. Bouchie, 24, was a seventh round pick by the Brewers after his junior season at Oral Roberts University, but was released due to catching depth in the Milwaukee system. He hit .290 with 7 home runs and 45 RBI in 59 games in the Golden Baseball League this year.
