If Billy Wagner was on the short list for closers the Detroit Tigers might be interested in, he's no longer available.

Wagner signed last night with the Atlanta Braves, agreeing to a one-year, $7 million contract. The deal includes a $6.5 million vesting option for 2011, which will kick in if Wagner finishes 50 games next season.

$7 million?

Based on those numbers, it looks like the Tigers were never in it to begin with.

Not only that, but the Braves are losing a first round pick.

In my opinion, they over-payed by alot. I just hope it doesn’t effect Lyon’s demands.

But they’ll probably get first-rounders when Rafael Soriano and/or Mike Gonzalez sign elsewhere, so they could afford to take the risk.

Type A free agent

When he was classified as a Type A, that’s when I knew he wasn’t going to become a Tiger. Plus, how does he get that designation after playing in 17 games?

The ranking is based on the two previous seasons,

but even then, he only pitched 62.2 innings over that span. That obviously means ERA, strike-out numbers, etc. have a significant weighting in the Elias formula.

He does those for MLB Trade Rumors now.

Doh!

I was wondering why he went totally poof. I tried reading MLBTR last season but it’s just too much.

Dodger fan checking in

Curious if you guys thought there was any legs to the George Sherrill to the Tigers rumor?

With the Dodgers in full fire-sale mode, I personally think Sherrill is one of the best/easiest guys to move. I realize the Tigers are also in cost-cutting mode, but Sherrill estimated arb salary is expected at $5MM. I don’t expect it would take much to get him….

I really don't know why people think we're in cost cutting mode...

ok…I kinda do.

With a quick peak at his numbers I wouldn’t mind a trade. LHP with with more K’s than IP’s and really doesn’t walk a ton of guys. I really wouldn’t complain but we do have Bobby Seay. Seay number wise isn’t as good but has shown improvement over the last two seasons. I think the Tigers expect Seay to continue his good play for them while remaining a cheaper option. I personally wouldn’t expect this trade to happen.

Little to no stock

He was supposedly a “lock” to be our closer last year and it never materialized. He’ll land somewhere but I don’t think it’s in Detroit.

Hi, I think you were one of the Dodgers fans I hung out at TBLA during the postseason

I know a Jackson-for-Sherrill rumor popped up shortly after the GM meetings started, but I haven’t heard anything about it since then. Financially, the two would pretty much cost the same. I can’t really weigh the numbers other than that because admittedly, I haven’t seen that much of Sherrill.

By the way, I was not under the impression that the Dodgers were in fire-sale mode, though the fact that they did not offer anyone arbitration does make me wonder.

Not offering arbitration to 2 guys who were certain to refuse

(Wolf and Hudson) pretty much has True Blue LA freaking out. Pretty insane thoughts are being debated seriously (the though of non-tendering Russel Martin.)

I don’t care for Sherrill much as I think a guy from AAA can give you the same value at the league minimum, so I would think he’s a guy the team would most try to move. Darkhorse is trading away Russel Martin.

TBLA was pretty fired up at the idea of getting Edwin Jackson back, but seeing what the Tigers wanted for him from Seattle pretty much killed the hopes that a swap of Jackson and Sherrill would be happening any time soon….
